Putting together the clues for Volume XXI
« Thread Started on Nov 3, 2010, 1:55am »

OK, let's put on our detective hats for this one...

The clues from Brian Ward via the Shout Factory website:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Still working on XX, but hmmm... We may have just locked in XXI. And that one's a DOOZY!

Eh, XXI's a tad bit tricky. You'll understand why soon-ish. I wouldn't necessarily expected a shorter turnaround. But it should be a fun set.

Another Poster: "I can hear Jordan telling Brian he got the rights to TWO major titles and immediately bumped 2 to the next volume so that Volume 20 could be steller.." Brian: "that's actually precisely how the conversation between me and Jordan went. But we're not bumping them to the next volume. Maybe the one after that. Dunno. Haven't decided."

We didn't gun for an all-Joel set. It just turned out that way. The next set won't be an all-Mike set. Neither will XXII.

DO NOT expect an all-Mike box for XXI.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok, so what can we take away from those clues?

1) They locked in all 4 episodes on 21 while still looking for an episode for 20. To me, that suggests that the episodes on 21 might form some logical set or grouping. Otherwise, why not shift one of those locked in episodes to 20?

2) It is both a DOOZY, a bit tricky, and a fun set. While "DOOZY" is in the mind of the speaker, my guess is that it has at least one episode that will be an "unlikely" release. "A tad-bit tricky" might suggest either a complicated rights process or possibly an agreement that certain episodes are released as a group (this plays into #1 above).

3) The bumped episodes from Volume 20 will not be put in Volume 21. These were likely two Mike episodes.

4) Brian said twice that Vol 21 would NOT be an all-Mike set. However, he did NOT say it would be a 2 Joel/2 Mike set. Nor, did he say that it would not be an all Joel set again.

OK, my gut reaction after seeing his first two quotes is: could they have possibly negotiated the rights to the Gamera episodes after all? Seems unlikely, I know. However, that would satisfy the doozy and tricky quotes. Maybe they only got a limited print agreement or something. Anyway, I realize that this is a crazy guess, but it was my first guess. It also seems unlikely that they would do two Joel sets in a row.

Any other theories on what could constitute a "tricky" and "doozy" of a set?

Tricky? First guess would be Puma Man, given it's been so difficult to find out who's got the rights.

A doozy? Either a popular episode or one that could have been to secure the rights for and that could be just about any.

Okay, so let's think about sets of 4 eps that could've been locked in place together.

There are the 4 Tsuburaya eps, which would be another all Joel set--scandalous!

What else is out there?

Okay, Puma Man rights are new to me here. What's the problem? Is it that the current rights holder is unknown and yet it's not a public domain movie? Or is it that there is more than one party arguing that they are the actual rights holder? Because that would be hilarious for people to be fighting over the rights to the PuMAMAN.

I, for one, would not be big on this idea. Fine with it being all Joel, but would prefer they spread out the Gamera episodes rather than dump them on one set. For one, I'm not a huge fan of the Gamera eps in general, and two I like a little variety of movies on the sets. Frankly, I'd have preferred Shout broke up the Master Ninjas over two sets, too.

That said, I do hope they can nail down the rights to the Gamera movies. . .I'd like them eventually, of course!

I don't think it'll be Gamera, Corman, or one of the Tsuburaya TV series (though that'd be nice). After seeing MASTER NINJA announced, I think there's a good possibility that something from one of the biggies (Universal, MGM, Sony) might be included. At least more failed-TV shows (THE STRANGER, CODE NAME DIAMOND HEAD).

The copyright is owned by some company called Indoamericana Film Ltd. Apparently, SF has been unable to track them down. I'm not sure what happened to Cinema Shares (who released the film in the U.S.), though the rights have surely reverted back to the Italian rights holders by now.

I also remember SF saying they thought they found someone who had the rights, but he couldn't back up the claim with the proper paperwork... or something like that.

Jordan said he thought he found the guy who owned Pumaman, but when he asked him to provide paperwork the guy stoped returning his calls.

Brian Ward BWard028: Wow. Loving Sony. In only 12 hours, they've approved our DARK SKIES documentary and some *ahem* other stuff.

Assuming they were able to license some Sony MST episodes (and that's a big if), that list of possible episodes would be:

Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster
Space Travelers
Teenage Crimewave
12 to the Moon

Am I missing any? If Shout Factory has worked a deal with Sony, I still don't see those first two movies ever being given the OK. 12 to the Moon and Teenage Crimewave would both be much more likely.

On the other hand, 12 to the Moon and Teenage Crimewave aren't typically among the more sought after episodes by fans (although I consider 12 to the Moon among my personal favs), so I'm not sure if getting the rights to those would be made into that big of a deal.

If they did indeed get Space Travelers that would once again set a new standard of SF attaining the seemingly unattainable. And if they legitimately scored the other Godzilla movie well... after that I can only assume we'd have human sacrifices... dogs and cats living together... mass hysteria!

It wouldn't be just those episodes, Sony owns MGM as well so if they
made a deal with Sony it could include MGM titles as well. That would
open the door for more episodes such as:

Robot Holocaust
The Magic Sword
Outlaw
Alien from LA
Villiage of the Giants
The Inredible Melting Man
Escape 2000

So if they got some kind of agreement with Sony, it's very possible
MGM titles could be available as well.

Over at the Shout Factory message board, Brian hinted that he may have two announcements for Thanksgiving if certain things fall into place, and that one wouldn't be about Vol 21.

To be perfectly honest, I have two things I COULD announce at Turkey Day. Whether or not a particular deal is cleared up and inked makes the ultimate call on which announcement that will be. Not to say it's definitely the titles to be included in XXI. Could be something else entirely.

Brian

Then he said this after some specualted about a deal with a major studio like Universal or MGM, along with several guesses for the lineup of 21 in another thread

Huh. People are starting to be able to read through me, I see. Not to say that any one person has the right combination (or do they?), but I'm finding it VERY difficult to come here and not want to answer specific questions or address specific comments that will immediately give it all away. Don't know how many times I can check in between now and Turkey Day.

Brian

I have to give Brian credit for giving us some hints but doing everything he can to not give us anything solid to go on.

The speculation till Turkey Day should be fun.

I don't think Sony owns MGM. Sony and MGM used to have a partnership agreement but MGM terminated that several years ago. Just recently MGM was bought out by Spyglass Entertainment. I don't know if they're owned solely by any studio though.

This sounds intriguing. Has there been any peep out of the CT camp (other than Joel's comments you mentioned) that an announcement is forthcoming?

Yeah, Sony doesn't own MGM. Fox is currently distributing MGM's output, and MGM is apparently merging with Spyglass.

From Sony, I'd expect to see TEENAGE CRIMEWAVE, then maybe 12 TO THE MOON (which is now available on their DVD-on-demand service). Less likely is MAROONED, though it's possible. GODZILLA VS. THE SEA MONSTER is almost certainly out of the question, as I couldn't possibly see Toho allowing it.
