Continuing on with the parade of people who are no doubt watching the most recently released episodes, I watched The Castle of Fu Manchu.
Man, was it worse than I remembered. I think the biggest problem with it is that I'm constantly given the impression that I'm coming into the middle of the movie, and that I've missed all the context leading up to the scene I'm currently watching. It just feels almost as if every other reel was dropped from the end product, only if that were the case, it'd be more coherent than this movie was. I just repeatedly kept feeling that I was missing some context, despite having actually watched every scene in the film.
And there were some scenes that I'm sure I would've found disgusting or disquieting if I had a better idea of what was going on. I think it might be better this way.

Just finished watching The Giant Spider Invasion. Can't say it was a favorite - the dim to non-existent lighting and general half-assedness of the plot are bad enough, but the constant riffing on people's appearances doesn't really sit well with me. Okay, the guy is fat. We get it.
Ah well, onwards and upwards. Soultaker tonight, I think.

Literally just finished Attack of the the Eye Creatures.
W-wow...
While not amongst the worst movies ever made because the boredom factor wasn't high enough...the production, props and attention to detail (all lack thereof) tried their hardest to gain that acclaim.
Good riffing, pretty good experiment...awfully made film, hehe.

The Day The Earth Froze
This is a really good episode. The riffing was solid, which usually comes with a movie this weird. Some of the host segments could be better. What the heck is sampo anyway? One of my favorite riffs was
Joel: "I think he just invented the Mobile logo"
Next up Bride of the Monster in my "viewing all the episodes in order" thing I'm doing this year.

Well, the past week I made my return to watching MST3K, so I've been watching lots and lots of stuff:
I finally watched the Master Ninjas, enjoyed them very much, apart from the wobbly soundtrack in the second episode of MN 1, but that was just a minor complaint.
Hercules Unchained and Against the Moon Men. I am now beginning to like the 4th season more and more because of episodes like this. Also, I highly doubt that 4 "____, no!" riffs in Moon Men make it a bad episode. I had fun with it, plus it includes the Pants song, which I love because it led to the "Oh, poopie" blooper.
I bought Box Set 22, and plowed through those. Time of the Apes seemed worse than I remembered it, riffing-wise. When I popped in Mighty Jack, I was expecting a very painful experience. As it turns out, it became my favorite episode of the set, and I can see why MJ likes it so much. Violent Years was a great Ed Wood episode mostly because of the recurring scenes of cars making turns around corners, but the short Young Man's Fancy did nothing for me. Just felt like I was running into the same problems I had with Starfighters: Too much dialogue with no spaces in between for Mike and the bots to insert any funny jokes. I liked the Brute Man a lot too, despite Mary Jo not thinking it was very good (what's her problem?).
Lastly, I've finally warmed up to the Giant Gila Monster. I used to label this one as one of my least favorite episodes, but now for some reason it just clicked for me, and I can now appreciate the director's leg-up obsession.

I think I've finally found my least favorite episode ever: Teenagers From Outer Space. The riffing was 90% rehashed jokes and references that were already made in other episodes. You could make a checklist from all the stock riffs in here, then pop in anything from season 3 and early season 4 and watch them reappear amongst original jokes that are specific to the movie. Basically the only original jokes in Teenagers From Outer Space are "Torcha!!!" and the guy trapped in the trunk thing. I guess I'm starting to realize that Joel was fond of recurring jokes, but this one was far too lazy.

Warriors of the Lost World
This is a strong start to season 5. Riffing is better than I remember and the host segments are just good. Looking forward to seeing 502 Hercules tonight if it gets here today from MST3Kvideos.com.

Well, the package arrived on time, as always, from WWW.mst3kvideos.com so I watched
502- Hercules The DVD looks amazing. The episode is not one of my favorites, but it has some good riffs. I love the Mads invention "the cellular desk".

Hi Everybody!
I used to post my MST3K/Film Crew/Rifftrax/Cinematic Titanic viewings on the Shout! Factory forum, but lately they've been having problems with spam, so I thought I'd come over here.
These are all DVDRs. (I will definately rebuy them when they come out on DVD)
0803 The Mole People (1956) The first half of this was pretty funny, then at the halfway point the sound stopped for about a minute before finally starting and it was out of sinc for the rest of the episode making it unwatchable.
1007 Track Of The Moon Beast (1976) Thanks to "The Band That Played California Lady" this may be my new favorite episode!
1010 It Lives By Night (1974) Another great episode.
1012 Squirm (1976) They edited ALOT out of this film. It was still pretty funny.

A very happy welcome to you, kabluie.
Here are my recent viewings:
12 to the Moon: This episode has some of my all-time favorite riffs ("Messiah tracks-- two, three days old." "They head off towards Emmaus."). However, when it comes to the "multi-national crew goes on a space exploration" episodes, I vastly prefer "First Spaceship On Venus". Even "Rocketship X-M" does it for me more than this one. "12 To the Moon" had the same producer, actors, and costumes as "Phantom Planet", and I kept thinking that I'd rather be watching that instead.
The Painted Hills: A personal favorite. Watching this again made me wish they did more westerns. I got tired of the "snausages" riffs this time around, but not so much it spoiled the greatness of the rest of the experiment. And boy, that kid really couldn't act.
The Creeping Terror: This one's in the bottom 10 for me, but I wanted to give it another chance. The movie wasn't as hard to sit through this time, and the riffing on the newlyweds was better than I remembered. I still had to work for it, but there were more laughs than I was expecting.
The Leech Woman: I've always liked this one, but for some reason, the movie itself really grated on me this time. Maybe it was the lack of any redeeming characters, maybe it was the terrible African stock footage and stereotypes, maybe it was the whole stabby ring thing, but I found the film loathsome. The riffing was top-notch, though, especially in the opening scenes with the bickering couple. Special note: was the assistant/fiancee Sally played by the same actress as the Romulan in "Girls Town"?

Volume 23 somehow fell into my palm and got stuck there while i was at best buy shopping for something else.
FU MANCHU: Just hurtful. even with the riffing. Jess Franco is one of the most joyless filmmakers out there, and i have no idea why he's making movies or why, aside from the T&A, anyone watches them. Frank Conniff's apology in the extras was the best part of this ep. and
KING DINOSAUR: One of my all-time faves. I even like the lemur sketch. Something I noticed this time: At one point the beefy hero guy and the brunette female scientist are hiding from a "giant" lizard and the guy shoves the woman (there's a whole lot of shoving in this ep, i think because it's really the only thing that looks at all credible or believable so i'm guessing the actors got told to be really physical). One of the bots even sez, "oh, fine, shove the woman around some more" -- one of several quips of this type -- and i think the actress actually bangs her head pretty hard against a rock. you can see her put her hand on her head and wince and the guy turns around for a split second before it cuts away. then later, when they're in the cave and the other lizard is in the cave entrance (right before he gets the lemur, gets swiped and rips his shirt off) he does the same reach-around-behind-him-and-shove-the-woman move, but he's carefully winding his hand around to cradle the back of her head as he does so. i think to avoid the accidental skull-cracking he'd given her before. that whole movie, i'm guessing, led to lots of cuts and bruises and pissed off people.
"thank you for destroying everything i know": still one of my all-time favorite riffs.

I almost regret having to add my voice to the recent slew of Fu Manchu bashing, but....
It was a rough one. Christopher Lee, being one of our family's favorites (my wife loves his cheesy Vampire junk while I love his Saruman and all the great voice work he does for Rhapsody) should have helped. It did not.
The thing that made it sooo hard was the ridiculous lighting. Even in the same scene, the lighting was inconsistent, depending on which camera was active.
I must say....way near the bottom for me. Real close...
Would really like to smash that kid against a rock.

Fu-Manchu: I liked the episode, I agree the movie was very painful, but I think Joel and the bots hit back hard, and scored multiple hits below the water line. Enjoyable but not part of my regular rotation.
Time of the Apes-The episode that made me a MSTie. The goofiness of the film, annoying kids, and Godo, appeal to me. The riffing on this one is great as are the host segments. One of my favorite episodes.
