The new Star Trek film, by my understanding, is to be released in May. I am not a Trekkie and I'm not highly interested in seeing this movie based on what I've seen in previews. In fact, speaking as a non-Trekkie, I feel there's been a great rift between Star Trek's origins and the latest conventions in film-making. Nevertheless, I've provided the upcoming film as a radio in this poll should this thread remain lingering by then.
I'll talk briefly about the Star Trek films that I have seen so far.
Star Trek: The Motion Picture I think it's a good film. It is pretty slow-paced and you've got a lot of long sequences like shuttling to the Enterprise or cruising through the alien spacecraft, so I guess it makes better home-viewing than theater-viewing. I don't think the film goes through a whole lot of red shirts and violence is pretty much non-existant; it is just a fun adventure of finding out the ironic reality of the film's antagonist "V'ger".
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan I've not seen this film in a long time. I actually saw this film only after having seen The Search for Spock, so the film's climax was fairly ruined for me.
Star Trek III: The Search for Spock This was the first Star Trek film I've seen, borrowed from the Toledo Library. It's a fair film, but I've not seen it in a while.
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home This one earns my vote as the favorite. I don't know if Trekkies are put off because this film is more so a comic adventure, but I like it just fine. I'm forced to assume they invented the plot device of going to San Francisco to minimize the budget.
Star Trek: First Contact I liked this movie better when I was younger, but now that I'm older, I see this film largely as where the film franchise began to decline. The film is just a big action vehicle, where red shirts wield phazers that inexplicably look like rifles and Picard is somehow able to kill Borg with holographic bullets.
Star Trek: Nemesis It's been a while since I watched this one, so I can't remember it too well. All I largely remember is that it was disappointing and that it continued on the track of portraying the universe of Star Trek as a more dark, dismal, and sterile environment.

I'm not a trekkie, but as a film fanatic, Wrath is a great movie. I also like 4 and 6 okay. Haven't seen many of the others.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of KhanI've not seen this film in a long time. I actually saw this film only after having seen The Search for Spock, so the film's climax was fairly ruined for me. You need to watch this again. Hands down my favorite. I feel this one is one of the best science fiction/adventure films in general, not just one of the best Trek films. My other favorites are The Undiscovered Country and First Contact, but I think those depend more on being a Star Trek fan to really enjoy (The Undiscovered Country in particular is a great film, but it's also much more specifically Star Trek, if that makes sense). The Motion Picture has great special effects and incredible music, but I don't like the film all that much. Search for Spock is reasonably solid, and the best of the "odd-numbered" films. The Voyage Home has a ton of great scenes in the San Francisco segments, but I really don't like the beginning and end so much. Final Frontier had a good score, but is pretty much crap otherwise. Generations was more like a decent TNG episode than the epic meeting of Kirk and Picard should have been. Insurrection never existed. Nemesis was....something. I forget, it made so little impact on me.

The Spock-in-San-Francisco scenes made IV my favorite. But the whale stuff was painfully stupid, so my enthusiasm for it is limited. The five best episodes of any of the series (the ones I saw parts of, at least--never did see any of Enterprise) were far better than any of the movies. Screenwriting is a terrible weakness for these movies.

I watched Star Trek IV a ton when I was younger. Wrath of Khan is a far more epic film, but I still have to go with IV as my favorite. Spock can't swear properly, Scotty talking into the mouse of the 1980's computer, Kirk not knowing if $100 is a lot of money, and my absolute favorite - Chekov in the hospital. Plus it had whales, and who doesn't like whales? Though as an adult I realize that transporting only two whales to the future wouldn't do crap. The species is genetically extinct at that point, so there's no hope of recovering the population. So those aliens are totally gonna come back and jack up the Earth once they die! Still a great one though. ;D

Kahn, no doubt. Just a flat-out great move, sci-fi or otherwise. Great effects, acting, and a buildup that really makes the final confrontation in the nebula flipping exciting.
I liked them all pretty much up to The Voyage Home. Of the TNG movies, I thought First Contact was pretty decent.

#1 Wrath of Kahn Great movie, Trek or otherwise
#2 - the one with the Whales, Voyage Home. Was hilarious #3 - The Undescovered Country
I liked Search for Spock, actually didn't mind Nemises (I could give a crap if it followed cannon or not)
The other movies sit between m'eh and forgetable.

I know I'm going to get an incredible amount of Heat for this but I really like the first Star Trek film. Even with all its special effects padding it really bowled me over when I saw it in the theater for the first time. I still think it's the best movie even with all the fan mystings and ill will towards it.
Second favorite is the 4th film. That one was a lot of fun which was the reason I watched StarTrek (TOS) in the first place.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of KhanI've not seen this film in a long time. I actually saw this film only after having seen The Search for Spock, so the film's climax was fairly ruined for me. You need to watch this again. Hands down my favorite. Well, I just rented it again, to which I was reluctant to because the store put it in the more expensive "prequel/sequel" section. Yes indeed, Cap, it is a good film. However, like I said, I'm not a Trekkie and have not seen much if any of the original Star Trek series, and thus I have not seen the prerequisitional "Space Seed". In fact, I think it's a bit of a let-down that the DVDs couldn't have at least packaged "Space Seed" as a bonus feature. Anyways, it's still good and Ricardo Montalbán loves the dramatic acting. I was watching the special features and I liked how one of the filmmakers described Star Trek as a trinity, focused highly on the relationship and characters of Spock, Bones, and Kirk. It makes me think how Star Trek: The Next Generation (which I have seen much more of) is more focused on its own trinity: Data, Worf, and Picard, three characters with expressive, polar personalities. Anyways, that's television and not the movies.
