Hi everyone,
I've taken it upon myself to create a new "Likelihood For Rhino Releases" thread. I've done a lot of research and have tried to make it as accurate as possible, but there are still holes to fill and corrections to make. If anyone has any information, please let me know. Movie rights can become complicated to research; there's the actual copyright, TV rights, and then there's home video rights (which is what I'm interested in). Comedy Central/Sci Fi Channel only had to negotiate for TV rights. Also, for the most part, the serials and shorts are PD.

It can be really hard to find information on home video rights, so in some cases I could only list the copyright holder, or TV rights holder.
_______________________________________________

SEASON ONE:

107 - Robot Monster Image Entertainment (licensed from Wade Williams). *DVD released by Image Entertainment* <NOT LIKELY>

108 - The Slime People Rhino (licensed from Medallion TV?). *DVD released by Rhino Home Video (OUT OF PRINT)* <LIKELY>

109 - Project Moonbase Image Entertainment (licensed from Wade Williams). *DVD released by Image Entertainment* <NOT LIKELY>

110 - Robot Holocaust MGM. <POSSIBLE/NOT LIKELY>

111 - Moon Zero Two Warner. *DVD released by Warner* <POSSIBLE/NOT LIKELY>

112 - Untamed Youth Warner. <POSSIBLE/NOT LIKELY>

113 - The Black Scorpion Warner. *DVD released by Warner* <POSSIBLE/NOT LIKELY>

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SEASON TWO:

201- Rocketship X-M Image Entertainment (licensed from Wade Williams). *DVD released by Image Entertainment* <NOT LIKELY>

203- Jungle Goddess VCI (licensed from Kit Parker Films). UPDATE: According to SF, Kit Parker films only had the U.S. rights to the Lipper films, while Warner Brothers has the Canadian rights, so that looks like it may complicate things. *DVD released by VCI w/ "Thunder in the Pines"* <POSSIBLE/NOT LIKELY>

205- Rocket Attack USA not sure yet. I found this film was in the Medallion film library (which included Wild World of Batwoman and The Crawling Hand) which was bought by the Parasol Group/Applause Networks Inc according to the most recent copyright. Columbia-Tristar released this on VHS in 1990. <LIKELY>

208- Lost Continent Image Entertainment (licensed from Wade Williams). *DVD released by Image Entertainment* <NOT LIKELY>

210- King Dinosaur see #203 VCI (licensed from Kit Parker Films). *Released on DVD by VCI Video w/ "The Jungle"* <POSSIBLE/NOT LIKELY>

213- Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster Sony (licensed from Toho). *DVD released by Sony* <WHEN HELL FREEZES OVER>

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SEASON THREE:

302 - Gamera Kadokawa. According to Brian from Shout Factory "I can tell you to take Gamera out of any foreseeable lists. We've tried and tried, but the Japanese really take their man-in-suit pictures seriously. It doesn't look they want anyone poking fun and, sadly, that means that episode may never see the light of DVD laser." <EXTREMELY UNLIKELY>

304 - Gamera vs. Barugon see #302.

305 - Stranded in Space CBS Paramount Television. They might be willing to license it to Shout Factory, since it was just a failed TV pilot/TV movie. FVI has the copyright on their "additions." <POSSIBLE/NOT LIKELY>

306 - Time of the Apes Tsuburaya Productions. Not sure if the issue with the Gamera films applies here, though we can probably assume so. <NOT LIKELY>

307 - Daddy-O Arkoff Estate. <NOT LIKELY>

308 - Gamera vs. Gaos see #302

309 - The Amazing Colossal Man Susan Hart (Nicholson Estate). <EXTREMELY UNLIKELY>

310 - Fugitive Alien Tsuburaya Productions. <NOT LIKELY>

311 - It Conquered the World Susan Hart (Nicholson Estate). <EXTREMELY UNLIKELY>

312 - Gamera vs. Barugon see #302.

313 - Earth vs. The Spider Lions Gate (licensed from the Arkoff Estate). . *DVD released by Lions Gate* <NOT LIKELY>

314 - Mighty Jack Tsuburaya Productions. <NOT LIKELY>

315 - Teenage Caveman Lions Gate (licensed from the Arkoff Estate). *DVD released by Lions Gate* <NOT LIKELY>

316 - Gamera vs. Zigra see #302.

317 - Viking Women and the Sea Serpent Lions Gate (licensed from the Arkoff Estate). *DVD released by Lions Gate* <NOT LIKELY>

318 - Star Force: Fugitive Alien 2 Tsuburaya Productions. <NOT LIKELY>

319 - War of the Colossal Beasts Lions Gate (licensed from the Arkoff Estate). *DVD released by Lions Gate* <NOT LIKELY>

322 - Master Ninja I CBS Paramount Television. FVI has a copyright on their "additions." *DVD released by Platinum Disc (unauthorized)* <NOT LIKELY>

323 - Castle of Fu Manchu Blue Underground. *DVD released by Blue Underground* <EXTREMELY LIKELY>

324 - Master Ninja II CBS Paramount Television. FVI has a copyright on their "additions." <NOT LIKELY>

405 - Being From Another Planet aka Time Walker Shout Factory [under license from New Horizon]. <POSSIBLE/NOT LIKELY>

411 - The Magic Sword MGM. *DVD released by MGM* <POSSIBLE/NOT LIKELY>

422 - Day the Earth Froze Rigma America Corporation/Mosfilm Studios. *DVD released by Retromedia (assuming AIP version is PD)* <LIKELY>

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SEASON FIVE:

502 - Hercules Delta Ventures, Ltd. (The Italian rights holders managed to restore their copyright). *DVD released by Retromedia, etc.. assuming PD* <LIKELY>

505 - Magic Voyage of Sinbad aka Sadko Ruscico/Mosfilms. Retromedia released the AIP version of this w/ "The Day the Earth Froze" (assuming it is PD). *DVD released by Image Entertainment (out of print)* <POSSIBLE>

602 - Invasion USA Synapse Video (movie seems to be PD though). *DVD released by Synapse* <EXTREMELY-LIKELY>

605 - Colossus and the Headhunters PD. Original released by AIP, the rights have surely reverted back to their original owners. *DVD released by Mill Creek Entertainment & Alpha Video* <EXTREMELY-LIKELY>

608 - Code Name: Diamond Head CBS Paramount Television or Lions Gate (who have the most recent copyright). Since this was just a failed TV pilot, it has 0 market potential UnMSTied on DVD, so there is a small glimmer of hope I think. <POSSIBLE>

610 - The Violent Years Sinister Cinema/Gregory J Luce. He also has copyrights registered for “The Dead Talk Back” and “The Sinister Urge." *DVD released by Something Weird Video & Alpha* <EXTREMELY-LIKELY>

611 - Last of the Wild Horses see #203. VCI (licensed from Kit Parker Films). <POSSIBLE/NOT LIKELY>

614 - San Francisco International Universal. Shout has already licensed several TV series from Universal and is distributed by them, so I believe the likelyhood of any of these failed TV-pilots are more likely (combined with Shout's experience in this area). <POSSIBLE>

615 - Kitten with a Whip Universal. *DVD release coming soon via DVD-on-demand service on Amazon* <POSSIBLE/NOT LIKELY>

901 - The Projected Man Universal. <POSSIBLE/NOT LIKELY>

903 - The Puma Man Indoamericana Film Ltd. Wow, even SF can't track down who in the hell owns this! <POSSIBLE>

Van Hagar has almost this exact same thing, but he says he's given up on it so I guess it's cool. Nice list, though you accidently called season nine season ten.

Not really, quite a bit of his information was wrong/out of date. (Which is by no means trying to insult Van Hagar of course).

The thing about our current sticky situation is that there are a few admins that feel that Gen has too many stickies as it is. That why a few were moved to Torgo's Trades a while back, because it was getting a little too crowded in here (plus they seem a little more at home there).

What does everyone else think?

Isn't there possibly still a problem with all of the so-called Sandy Frank movies due to the English-language dub? For instance, Gamera's original U.S. release was by a film distributor (can't remember which one) in 1966. Their rights ran out after 20 years in 1986 (BTW, this version is the one getting PD releases), so Sandy Frank Entertainment acquired the U.S. rights and released their own version with their own English dub. This is the version MST3K used, so there are two possibilities I can see:

(1) Even though Sandy Frank Entertainment doesn't have the rights to Gamera anymore, the dubbed soundtrack is their property, so unless it can be licensed from them, Rhino cannot release this episode (or any other Sandy Frank episode for that matter).

(2) Once Sandy Frank's rights to Gamera expired, their rights to their dub soundtrack also automatically expired too, allowing the dub track to be released by anyone now. (This possibility seems reasonable given that the 1966 dub is getting the PD-like releases without paying anyone royalties.)

Distributor-created dubs really seems to be a bit of a gray area in the copyright world.

Sandy Frank only produced the dubs for GAMERA and GAMERA VS. ZIGRA, (and maybe for GAMERA VS. GUIRON). BARUGON and GYAOS used Daei's international dubs. Zigra didn't have a dub before this, since it hadn't received a US release. Also, the uncut version of the first Gamera did not have a dub. I think Daei at the time did not have a copy of the NTA release, hence why SF just created a new dub that (except for the beginning/end credits) synced up to the Japanese version.

Even though SF produced some of the dubs, he wouldn't own them forever. Once the movie rights reverted, the dubs would either be sent back or destroyed (example: The Titra studio dubs used on the Godzilla films released by AIP). It wouldn't make sense to own materials for a movie you couldn't release (or didn't want to renew rights to).

If the dubs did become public domain, it wouldn't matter, since the movie was still copyrighted/owned by someone else. Neptune Media would license/eventually buy the Gamera films from Hearst Entertainment. They choose to find the original US version for the first Gamera films ("Gammera the Invincible"), likewise.. they used the AIP-TV dub for their widescreen VHS of Gamera vs. Guiron. The third title (each title had a seperate English version and a Japanese version tape) Neptune Media put out was Gamera vs. Zigra, which used the SF produced dub.

So, the myth that Sandy Frank owns the actual dubs is pretty much null and void. Hearst Entertainment would have owned them, and then Daei (or whoever bought the rights next) would have them.

The cheapie companies started releasing the old AIP-TV verisons of the Gamera films, assuming their were PD. This started with Retromedia, followed by Alpha, and many many others. Diamond Entertainment put out two of the SF versions (the quality is worse than an EP VHS).

As for Time of the Apes, Fugitive Alien I/II, and Mighty Jack... those dubs were produced by Sandy Frank (as far as I know). Their original creators, Tsuburaya Productions, have them now. Rhino could go to them and license those, which would be great.

Here's a thought: Rhino could hire people to do NEW dubs for the MST3K releases with permission from the company.

If that won't work, well, shove a pie in my face, cause I'm running out of scenarios.

And, Travis, please change 212 from "No Likely" to "Likely."

No better yet, just remove the whole entry. Thank you.
