Pure Comedy is at a low point on TV, with the best stuff simply being shows that have been around for years ( The Daily Show, South Park, The Simpsons, Conan, etc.) while the new comedy shows have, with few exceptions, been dreadful. But Drama, on the other hand, is doing all right. I've started watching 2 new shows this year that I like a lot: Desperate Housewives and the new Battlestar Galactica. Both are so good that I don't miss any episodes of either one (luckily, I have a DVR to prevent that) - and it's been a long time since I've said that about any new shows. I may try Battlestar Gallactica. Desperate Housewives looks to me like a network version of Sex in the City, which I didn't like too much to begin with.

Sitcoms (Everyone of them is a fat guy with a good looking wife) While I don't think it's completely realistic, it gives some of us hope.

I have been fighting the urge to post here for some time. I see some highly rational, well thought-ought discussions of the videoscape we loosely call TV. I in no way wish to discourage this discussion.
I am, at times, a small, small man. And this is one of them.
TV SUCKS, DUDE.
Anymore, if it's not one of the ubiquitous Discovery Channels, I just don't watch TV. And I was a child raised on TV. The safe, tired formulas just don't work on me anymore, I guess. Not that any of this makes me better than anybody. Probably the opposite, since my mind is no longer open enough to suspend disbelief.
*Sigh*
There. That feels better. Carry on, and pay no attention to the curmudgeon in the corner.

Spoken like a true prodigy. See, I once had a thread here asking if there was any good TV left. I got some responses about decent shows, but it still wasn't enough for me.

Curmudgeons like us have to stick together, Dave. (Somebody has to do Phantom's job once he...well...lives up to his name, let's say.) So... ummmm... ya wanna go see what's on TV?

my tv life has ended and had a rebirth many times now. it died with mst3k then came back again with buffy and angel, then died again, and has now been reborn wtih the office (even though it's via the wonders of dvd). david brent is a genius and if i had my penn & teller (don't have showtime), i'd probably be able to look at my remote once more.

Wel, I watch television and I am entertained by it still, but that's because I watch cartoons.
Tons and Tons of cartoons.
Also, I am a hyperactive teenager. My tastes in comedy are probably so much less refeined and. . . well. . . so much less good than most of the members on the board. But I am happy this way. I will face your dilemma in a couple of years or so.

I'm aparently one of about seven people on the planet who doesn't think that Desperate Housewives is all that it's cracked up to be. I mean,....I'll give you that the show actually has subplots that exist between the episodes, and that said plots grow in a reasonable fashion....but still, the show just seems like the XFL done as a drama. If it weren't nearly 2 AM I'd better explain that analogy.
As for Adult Swim....I liked 'em back in the early days when they were merely "edgy" at times (heck, there was a time when Space Ghost didn't have a parental advisory warning). The writing seemed a lot more creative then. Now I just see what looks like they have a big wheel in their writing room with various topics, they spin the wheel, and then make fun of that topic for a while. "Okay, spin one gave us "tree", spin two gave us "ukelele", spin three gave us "martian." We've got enough for an episode, start writing! And don't decapitate the main character this week, we did that the past three episodes. Just settle for four or five more expletives than usual."
Granted, I've not watched Adult Swim since they stopped getting new episodes of Home Movies (lost my cable about a week after that), so maybe they've turned a new leaf and I shouldn't judge 'em.
Dang it, this political correctness won't even let me hold opinions about prior events....stupid Harrison Burgeron-esque Forshadowing Societal Trends....

TV as good as MST3K, no, but there are some shows that I really like that are on. Here they are.
Chappelle's Show South Park Two And a Half Men Still Standing Everybody Loves Raymond Listen Up Cops Judge Mathis (The man has the most finely tuned BS detector you will ever see. I'm not a huge court TV show guy, but his show is absolutely hilarious.) The Simpsons Howard Stern
