Well? Anyone here a Trekkie or Trekker or just some Sci-Fi geek who enjoys the shows and movies like me? I enjoy all the shows in their own little way. They all have something unique to offer the saga:
Star Trek *** out of ****
Campy but refuses to accept it. I think that was it's charm back when it was released. A sci-fi show in space that took itself seriously, while other shows like Lost In Space (which I enjoy too) started off like that but just ended up silly by season 3. Whether you understand its following or not, it's a classic.
Star Trek: The Next Generation **** out of ****
While the first season tried to duplicate the original series, it eventually evolved into an even better show. Driven even more by characters all over the ship, instead of a main three like in the original series (Although this still exists with Picard, Riker, and Data). This is often called the best of the bunch and with good reason.
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine *** 1/2 out of ****
I admit, this one had to grow on me. But once it did, I was hooked. I was pissed when it was removed from syndication so Fox could show another rerun of That 70's Show. Focused on even more characters than any of the other shows, it was the most political and often most interesting.
Star Trek: Voyager ** 1/2 out of ****
Voyager is another series that had to grow on me, but I've seen very few episodes so I don't know if it ever got better than what I saw. Some of the best aspects of previous shows were lost, most notably interesting characters. Everyone just seemed there for decoration. Although not as bad as it's made out to be, I do see why it gets so much flack.
Enterprise (Star Trek: Enterprise) **** out of ****
My personal favorite. I love the concept of watching Star Fleet getting started. The cast is wonderful, even if it does retreat to the Big Three formula of the original series (this time being Archer, Trip, and T'Pol). I try not to miss an episode.
Personal ranking list:
1. Enterprise
2. The Next Generation
3. Deep Space Nine
4. The Original Series
5. Voyager
As for the movies, I thought they averaged out pretty good.
Star Trek: The Motion Picture * 1/2 out of ****
I've only seen this one once. But I remember it being the most boring Trek adventure I've ever seen. It picked up the pace towards the end, but that wasn't enough to save it.
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan *** out of ****
The most popular of the Trek movies, I can see why, but it just doesn't click with me. Maybe I'd like this one better had the episode it was a sequel to (Space Seed) been a better episode. Still, a great Idea and a great watch.
Star Trek III: The Search For Spock *** out of ****
Christopher Lloyd as a Klingon? I am so there. Interesting story. Kept my attention.
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home *** 1/2 out of ****
Hillarious. And it's intentionally hillarious. This was just a fun movie. I'd watch it over and over again.
Star Trek V: The Final Frontier ** out of ****
Often called the worst of the lot, I still like it better than TMP. This one's just cheap with a good premise gone horribly wrong.
Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country *** 1/2 out of ****
The last hurrah of the original crew, and the best flick featuring them IMO. Great conclusion to an era.
Star Trek: Generations *** 1/2 out of ****
There's rumor of an "Odd Curse" affecting Star Trek movies, but when I look at this and III, I say that rumor can lick me. I thuoghly enjoyed this one. Lackluster for some, maybe, but I found it very entertaining.
Star Trek: First Contact **** out of ****
Wonderful. Absolutly wonderful. A great story involving the badest badasses in the galaxy, the Borg, and you got the very best Trek film.
Star Trek: Insurection ** 1/2 out of ****
I've never seen a movie stand around and scratch its ass for about one hour and forty minutes before this, and I hope I never do again. I think it's trying for entertaining, but it fails for the most part. Still worth a look.
Star Trek: Nemesis *** out of ****
Supposedly the last Next Generation movie, and also continuity-wise the last Star Trek adventure (or latest, maybe another series will emerge that takes place after Voyager). Fun, but a shallow remake of Wrath of Khan.
Overall ranking:
1. First Contact
2. The Undiscovered Country
3. The Voyage Home
4. Generations
5. The Search For Spock
6. The Wrath of Khan
7. Nemesis
8. Insurection
9. The Final Frontier
10. The Motion Picture
This year is pretty good for Star Trek. We should be getting more new episodes of Enterprise soon and later this month we get an Undiscovered Country Special Eddition DVD. Plus Voyager's starting the Seasonal Sets next month, so diehard fans can finally own the entire 24th Century Saga on DVD (by which I mean TNG, DS9, Voyager, Generations, First Contact, Insurection, and Nemesis). Plus we might get a Special Edditon of Generations and (hopefully) First Contact by year's end.
