8-Track - yeah, I remember that. I remember it would make a loud click noise when switching tracks, which happened when the current track ran out, frequently mid-song (yes, in middle of the damn song!). That plus the lousy fidelity - it's amazing the crappy technology we had to put up with back then.
But once something better came along, it was over, because Audio Cassette did to 8-Track in the late-'70s what CD did to LPs in the '80s and what DVD is doing to VHS now.

In the summer of 86, my cousin bought (not sure on the year, so take it easy on me, car buffs) a 1973 Chevelle with and 8-Track player. We had a couple sitting around from his older brother, but fortunately, we were lucky to find one of the last remaining 8-Track/cassette adapters at our local Hill's department store. There was an 8-track shaped device which you inserted into the player and then it had a wire sticking out which ran to a mini cassette player that you had to set on the dash. Worked like a charm, though. We blasted Run-DMC's Raising Hell all summer long.

I also remember that in 1978, my parents gave my sister a new car for her 16th birthday. And one of the options on the car was a stereo with either Audio Cassette or 8-Track tape. My older brothers told her to get Cassette because 8-Track was on it's way out. But, because she owned a few albums on 8-Track (maybe about a dozen or so), she chose that for her stereo. And by about 2 years later, she couldn't find much of anything on 8-Track in the stores to play in her car. (She should've listened to my brothers, something which they reminded her of all the time.)

I had an 8 trak player in all my crummy used cars when I was youngah! I kept my tapes in a cardboard box on the passengers side. I also left the tapes in the car all summer and winter which screwed them up more than once. Man, I love CD's! To answer the question. I threw them all away the year I bought my Honda Civic which came with a cassette deck and never looked back.

Man I have a great stereo system, but during the last move the arm came loose somehow and broke the needle. It's an old system and to buy a needle today is ungodly (I used to get these, 2 for $10!) Last time I needed a needle it took me forever to find one. I can't even remember what I paid. When my old system died I made damn sure to snap the arm off for a spare needle. Oh yeah, and I've got a vinyl of the White Album, just thought that would fit nicely. I love my records, still have them all (even an old worn out copy of Rubber Soul with the capitol logo on the LP) I didn't get one of those stamped copies, but my White Album has the raised lettering (not the black lettering) and had the original "glossy" 8x10 photo's (not the cardstock that came later). Man I miss those old album covers, they were so cool. Sgt. Peppers will never be the same on CD, no matter how much they improve the sound, they'll never be able to capture the magic of the cover (Front, back or gatefold - with all the goodies they packed with it)

How true. CDs arguably improve the sound but much is lost in cover art.
