Nice graphics on the banner. But it's hard to be discreet about what forum I'm on. So my household knows what website I spend WAY too much time on!

Sorry. I'm a big believer in using the word that means exactly what you're trying to say. If one word can say it, why use three? www.dictionary.com is a good link to have on one's desktop. Perfect for times like this.

Sorry. www.dictionary.com is a good link to have on one's desktop. Perfect for times like this. That reminds me of the first time I used that website. I was desperately trying to interpret someone's e-mail that I didn't know well, to determine his intentions. And it really came in handy. (For non-college graduates like myself who don't have an extended vocabulary)

But still the banner is terrible and ostentatious should be in the funny words thread.

I have read the Sci Fi board for almost 3 years and posted there for only two. The problem with the spam is a recurring one that ebbs and tides, but never really goes away. Right now it is as bad as I have ever seen it. I would not count on it going away, but right now, my feeling about the Sci-Fi board are mixed, like those of the reruns of the show not continuing. I am sad at the thought of the current state of things, especially considering the board and show's past glory, but sometimes it is just time to let go.
The problem is that there are people on the Sci-Fi board who get baited and start attacking the trolls, and this only eggs them on more. Right now, almost all legitimate posters on the Sci-Fi board are staying away from it, and are here or at mst3k.org. The trolls are having their fun, but eventually they will get tired and leave when there is no one to harass.
A bit of history, as best as I can recall ...
There was a poster named Mistyboy who trolled and flamed people. Mistyboy made a lot of people mad on September 11, 2001. The guys behind Mistyboy then announced that Mistyboy was not real, but an invented character. They then said they were leaving, but that drove away a lot of old timers and good people. The brothers behinf Mistyboy posted under different handles, including Man Without Hat, Petey Plane, TPFKAM (The Poster Formerly Known as Mistyboy), and others. Man Without Hat still posts at the Sci Fi board and at mst3k.org, but he angered so many people that he is harassed everytime he posts by daughter of reubair and phigment.
Secret Santa, Sticky and Stank, and Soupy Sales are apparently all the same person. Other trolls that have shown up are weirdtrollking, Rap Is Crap, Gypsy's Twat, etc. I remember one of the troll sposting that he had been on the board and asked a question and was treated rudely, so he was coming after the board with a vendetta/vengeance.
There was also a time when someone called ThEkNeEsOfToRgO or something like that posted a bunch of song lyrics or posted messages in the alternating capital and small letters.
Sometimes trolls will "steal" handles by substituting letters from another person's handle (a I for an l, adding a period to the end, etc.) in ways that are not obvious to a casual reader. After a while it gets tiresome and hard to remember who is who. One of the bad things about the trolls is that it is hard to tell when someone new comes along whether or not they are legitimate. The only people I will reply to are people who have posted on the board for some time and who do not flame other people and treat others with respect, or who at least post about and seem to care for the show.
I don't know who is behind all the spam, but it really is sick, in my mind, to flame people on a board for a show that was cancelled almost 5 years ago. But I guess the safety of doing something in the anonymity of cyberspace that these people would never have the guts to do to someone in person makes it appealing. And as long as they get attention from people, they will keep doing it.

Wow ! I think I will finally be able to sleep at night knowing the real history behind those characters. As I've told you Hookem, I used to be known as whitewave1.
I hate to say this, but I actually went through the archives trying to understand who was who. When you come in as a newbie, there are alot of things that don't make sense. And people stealing handles make it even more confusing. Like I didn't know if "Men Without Hat" was a good or bad guy. And I didn't know he was the real Mistyboy I have heard so much about. I just always him there. (and wasn't that a band from the 80's who did Safety Dance?)
Now , I have a question for you? Was the original McSizzle a "good guy", who had his handle stolen? And do you honestly think Thunderer is Secret Santa?

Thunderer said he was those people in so many words. Don't know about McSizzle, or whatever his name was, but my impression was that he was a troll since he was always ready to get in flame wars and drop obscenities at the name of a hat. I could be wrong, though. There have been so many of those handles come and go....
Luckily, no one ever tried to steal my handle, but they couldn't really, because of the use of lower case letters. The spammers left me alone for the most part except when I ridiculed Rap Is Crap and Sticky and Stank. I got in a flame war last year with BrainGuy when he or someone else made a post about how Mary Jo Pehl was a horrible fat beast or something. I stood up for her and how it was not funny to make fun of overweight people. Then the spammers turned on me for a while and made handles like "Honkemhorns" or "hookemhorny," and "Chris Simms" (UT quarterback at the time) and made up a handle by a supposed girl named "Lord's Lamb" or something who addressed posts to me.
Man Without Hat was a reference to the 80's group that brought us Safety Dance. I was actually disappointed to find out that he was one of the guys behind Mistyboy because one of the first posts I made at the Sci-Fi board was replied to by TPFKAM, and he was actually nice to me. Man Without Hat's posts related to the show or games have been interesting, but it's hard for me to trust someone who did what he did as Mistyboy. But that's the game these people play. They like to be nice and get our trust, but then they betray it and flame us. It's all just a sick game, and we can't trust anyone new until they post for a while and we can see that they're OK. But because of all the multiple handles, you can't be sure whether someone is (although you really can't tell in cyberspace) who they say they are or just an alternate handle.

Man Without Hat was a reference to the 80's group that brought us Safety Dance. ) It takes someone who REALLY remembers the 80's to know that one.

It got to be a bit ridiculous over on that side. I don't know what those guys problem was or even why they decided to squat over the MST3K board but, I'd like to thank whoever started this board as it is one of the best I've seen around.

And don't forget racist at times. Those people over there got downright nasty. It made me sick to go there. These people were just trying to ruin something because it was there. At least I can say it motivated you and gave all of us somewhere to talk that is actually (well most of the time) on topic and not filth.
