There have been threads about the cars we drive but this is about your transmission. Now being a shifty guy I prefer a manual. Three on the tree to a five speed, I like to shift for myself. But the manual tranny may be going the way of the dinosaur. What do you prefer? And can you drive a manual?

While I drive an automatic (and they are useful if you live in an area of heavy traffic) I prefer the control you can get with a manual. My current car was too good a bargain to turn away though.

i know somewhat how to drive a manual. i keep asking hubby if he'll teach me again, but i get scared that i'll burn out his clutch. but, from what i hear, once you go manual, you never go back, baby!

I drive a six speed manual Honda and really enjoy it. I live in a flat coastal area so it isn't like I have to worry about rolling backwards.

There are a few hills around here, so manual would be tedious at times. But, I'm not very experienced with one anyway so it's automatic for me.

Manuals kick much ass. I can beat a person off the line in the same car if I have a manual and they have an auto.

I used to prefer manual. Then I had to drive in Chicago's rush hour for 5 years.
My left knee is a big fan of automatic.

Our cars:
Jeep--Manual. Miata--Manual. Explorer--Automatic.
If I'm driving, & wish to enjoy the experience, I drive a manual, since that's what I prefer. If I just wanna get there & back in comfort, I take the "Grocery Getter" Explorer.
The Jeep is especially fun to drive because it's like driving an old farm truck--some double-clutching & a few scratches. The Miata is great because it has such short throws on the stickshift.

I used to drive a manual a long time ago and loved it.
I don't have or need a car as long I'm in NYC....

Never got the chance to drive a stick, so automatic is my choice. Looks very difficult. I don't want to have to split my concentration between the road and the stick. I'd probably have an accident.

I never got much of a chance to learn manual, but being that I already have a bum knee, it's probably for the best that I stick to automatics.

My car's manual, but my wife's is automatic. And we don't usually drive each other's cars (no reason...habit). Anyway, when I do drive her car, it's inevitable that at some point in the trip, I'm going to hit the brake with my left foot. Not cool.

Manual always. I was taught on an automatic but when I bought my car it was a manual so I had to learn. I'll never buy another automatic again. I love the control plus it's so much more fun to drive.
