Catalina Caper (1967)
Starring: Tommy Kirk, Del Moore, Venita Wolf, Little Richard
Premise: It's fun in the sun down at Catalina. But someone stole a scroll! But let's keep dancing while the plot develops.
So, How is The Movie?
On a list of the worst movies ever taken on by the Satellite of Love, Catalina Caper wouldn't be in the top 10, or even 25. It is not a good movie, sure, and it is more of a showcase of the '60s and Little Richard then anything, but I'm sure these types of movies were coming out every other week in the '60s, and this one was no different. The acting is pretty wooden, as Tommy Kirk couldn't make a nuclear holocaust interesting. The scenes with the guy who kept getting in wacky situations were awful and cringeworthy, and there really is no plot to speak of, just plot advancements and some dancing. Not a good movie at all, but but I doubt it would break someone's spirit. And for some reason, the Allen Sherman lookalike is strangely appealing to me.

How Did Joel and the Bots Do?
This is definitely one of MST3K weakest episodes. Why? Because there really is nothing that really induces any inspired riffing at all. Not to mention the fact that it's a comedy of sorts keeps bringing back lame moments of them fake laughing, which gets boring after so much of it happening. This felt like the writers gave a half-hearted effort, or they just couldn't think of anything that amusing about a movie that constantly repeats itself. I also didn't feel like Joel and the Bots never got really into the flow of the movie, but rather it felt like people just randomly spurting off jokes at the top of their head without any thought (yes, i realize that's the point of the show). But when you have to riff on animated opening credits (which i thought weren't too bad), you need to go back and pick " another movie. That said, there are a share of laugh out loud moments, such as "The Nazi Party!" I don't think they lost any chances of making a great episode out of this movie, it would've never worked.
The rest of the episode is a mixed bag, the bots praying seemed like good potential lost, but the invention exchange is pretty good, with the Tank Top being the highlight. As for the host segments, I absolutely love when Joel is talking about the '60s, as it gives him a character trait we hadn't seen that early on. I never found the Creepy Girl jokes funny, and having a song around that is unbearable. As for the last segment, I felt there was so much better material to use then a "Confusion Guide." So a bit of a dud, but we all have moments of weakness.

Best Riff:
(Allen Sherman lookalike is told to settle down)
Crow: Get married, have some kids, AND TAKE THAT RIDICULOUS HAT OFF!
Now, a Michael J. Nelson episode, if you please
