I just got started watching the KTMAs again. I am, you see, planning to watch each and every episode in experiment number order. And I thought I'd start a review thread to sort of catch my reflections and such. Not an exhaustive review thing, just something to fill the lonely moments when I'm not watching episodes. Something to do while I listen to Santo & Johnny, Chet Atkins, Buddy Merrill, and Ventures records.
So, I've done this before. Sorta. Last year around this time, I got my full KTMA-10 set from a guy on ebay (I like to call them my "Boots"). I decided there was no other way to watch all of them but to watch them in order. I also watched the Rhino eps as I collected them. But I was missing most of those.
Now however, I really have all the episodes. I have recently completed my Rhino collection and ordered some dvds from Skyroniter. To date, I have seen all but these: K10 - Cosmic Princess 103 - Mad Monster (Commando Cody, Chapter 2) 201 - Rocketship X-M 509 - Girl in Lover's Lane 814 - Riding With Death These five eps ended up being duds in my set. So, to make it special, I will be waiting to watch each of those episodes until they come up in the rotation. Well, I'm excited anyway.
So, I've watched K04-K06 so far and I think I had more to say after watching each, but I neglected to start my thread.
Anyway, Gamera vs. Barugon and Gamera both have really long stretches with no riffing. It starts to feel like the concept of the show is more centered on the watching of bad movies as opposed to the making of jokes. It's as if they figure that any other given local station shows bad old movies, so they might as well too, but with a little something on the side. That might even work for a small tv station, but bad movies as vehicles for great humor is a much better, more nationally viable, concept. Though it is only Joel and Tom in the theater for Gamera vs. Gaos, the riffing is much more consistent. This makes a really big difference. The jokes still are generally not that great, a little above the par of the previous two eps, but it's really the frequency of riffidge that makes this episode the first good episode in my eyes.
Well, groovie. Time to work.

Alright, it's my weekend, that means I get to watch a bunch of episodes and maybe file taxes if I can squeeze it in.
I remembered something I had been thinking about Gamera vs. Gaos (K06). Kenny, the über annoying turtle-loving kid, does something throughout the movie that really drives me 'round the bend. When someone asks him a question, he often answers affirmatively, and when he does that, he answers with "Mm!" You mean Gamera is still alive? Mm! Gamera is just misunderstood? Mm! I noticed a character doing it once in K07 as well, so I think it must be a Japanese affirmation that gets dubbed as is. I guess it resembles "mm-hmm" in English. But man, when Kenny does it, it just makes me wanna squish his head. Wait, this is the one in which his name ISN'T Kenny, isn't it? I think it's Timmy, but whatever.
K07- Gamera vs. Zigra
I think the show gets better with each episode at this point. I'm thinking that if someone were curious about the KTMAs but didn't really feel they needed to go after all of them, Gamera vs. Zigra would be the first episode that would be worth seeing.
I had pretty high anticipation for watching this one because I knew Crow would be back and because the show had gotten so much better than the last time Crow was actually present, which was three shows earlier in K04. Crow's always been my favorite so I was excited to watch the first episode that has decent riffing AND all three guys in theater. Sure enough, this was a very good episode. This episode made me feel that if I'd been a Minneapolite at the time, this episode would have really gotten me talking about the show and spreading the word about it.
(YEAH! My dvds from Sky JUST arrived. Wow, I knew this would be exciting, but I am truly THRILLED that I now have the only five episodes that I've never seen! Makes me want to shirk my chores and taxes so I can get to watching K10.)
Anyway, I wonder if Zigra is the first ep for which the Brains screened the whole movie before taping the theater segments. There are some moments where it seems that they were prepared to make their riffs. For example, Crow's Sandy Frank joke about dropping his corndog at the carnival seems well prepared. Also, when jets are taking off Crow says, "They don't have jets, just film of jets. Jets that go this way [pause anticipating upcoming shot] and jets that go that way!" This phenomenon is not a problem; they never sound fake or wooden. I'm grateful that they put more into this episode because it makes for better comedy. I think this ep has the first riffs that make me laugh as opposed to simply keeping me interested.
This is also the first episode that features the Mads as speaking characters and it struck me that Trace seems to have a "Dr. Forrester voice" that he seems to have dropped at some point. I was thrilled to see that Dr. F. has silly nicknames for Joel right from the start! I think I'd like to compile the definitive list of these. If that's been done already, it won't be definitive, but I'm gonna do it one way or the other. In this episode we hear Joely Boy Toy, Joely Poly, and Booby, if you want to count that, which I do. And hey, Crow also says dickweed for the first time!

Heh. I wish you luck, warwilf. I started watching the episodes through in order several months ago, but did I think to write capsule reviews of each one at the time? Noooo, I didn't! So my opinions on the KTMA ones are pretty much lost, as well as a lot of others. Oh, well.
I agree with you on K06, Gamera Vs. Gaos, however (I kind of like that one _better_ than the Season 3 version, for some weird reason)--it was the first KTMA episode I saw and the one that also made me decide to name my IMDB username "Gaos". ;)
As for Zigra...I love that one. The (at the time) real-time countdown to the New Year's is just so cool...we get to see the Mads for the first time...Joel looks genuinely depressed (or sick--my money's on sick)--imagine having to drive through Minnesota snow in the dark on New Year's Eve--while you have a cold--just to do a silly puppet show! I think he earned his "showbiz trouper points" that day, in my opinion. And then the actual riffs. The silly puns, the comments on stock footage, the anticipating when Helen would "want a Coke!", and the primitive beginnings of the Gamera Theme Song. A pretty good episode all around. And getting to see the UNcut versions of these movies is cool. There was a bit taken out of Gamera vs. Barugon that, when I saw it in uncut form, made part of the movie make a lot more sense!
Also, when you watch these all in order, you'll notice just _how_ many of the KTMA riffs/references made it into the Season 3 Gamera bits. Not just the "Water--the source of all life" riffs but also little blasts-from-the-past such as Servo somehow coming into the theater on his own, when he's NOT supposed to be able to do that, or doing a Radio Announcer bit ala when the Silver Servo got his "DYNAMIC, MIGHTY VOICE!" I don't know, maybe it's just me, but I could see a lot of things from the old days that they decided _not_ to throw out...

When I watched the season 3 Gamera vs. Zigra (I think that's the one), I was very disappointed that they didn't use my favorite segment from the corresponding KTMA episode:
"Smoke under water!" "Hey, wasn't that song by Deep Turtle?"

So, I went for the K08-10 marathon today (anyone surprised?). Taxes will have to be done tomorrow and I really oughtta get them dishes washed. But today I couldn't resist the temptation of Cosmic Princess!
But geez, if there's any three episode marathon I would NOT recommend, it is these three eps! Holy cow, I was bored out of my mind!
When you're watching KTMA episodes, it's granted that they are on a different plain, but I was really hoping that the shows would continue appreciating as I had seen with the first four eps. But, that was not so.
K08 - Gamera vs. Guiron
I don't get bugged by all the Gamera eps being so close together (I do remember getting really sick of Commando Cody though, so I have that to look forward to for the next season). And really, I find the Gamera movies fun in that horrendous Japanese monster movie way. This one though, has got to be the worst Gamera episode. I don't remember having such a reaction to this episode the last time I watched it, but it really tried my patience this time. It all comes down to the fact that there weren't enough jokes from J&TBs. It's one of those times when this awful movie would be super if the guys would just apply their signature balm. The movie just drags on and on and they seem to make fewer jokes as it progresses. Well, I feel I shouldn't complain so much because I know the next two were much worse. The movie itself is actually so laughable it sometimes carries itself when the guys are not. For example, there's the final fight scene with the knife-noggin. Gamera does some high-flyin' stunts on the uneven bars (er well, just the one bar, I guess). He also gets the two shiruken stuck in his arms and does the macarena as a result. Then he finishes the guy off by putting a missile through the hole in his head and sparking it off! Though it's a laughable movie, it's also extrememly annoying. A part of the annoyance is the worst dubbing job I have ever heard. It's not that it's out of sync, in fact, it's TOO in sync! All those hilariously odd pauses in their speech is because they're matching unadjusted English sentences to the rhythms and pauses of the lips on screen. It actually sounds a lot better if they ignore the pauses and just spit out the line (I know this because I have an uncut copy of this movie with a different overdub). The pauses are pretty funny at first, but eventually drive one nuts. I can kinda handle all the midwestern accents given to the Japanese ladies, 'cause I like accents and regionalisms; what I can't stand is grown women being used to voice young boys!
K09 - Phase IV
Some of the host segments were good. I love the one with the Mads selling Joel's Dodge for funds. "Not the slant six swinger!" This movie seems to be bad but kinda not. It's dramatic, though, and not adventurous. It has somewhat thrilling moments, but is mostly boring. Most of the time I just wanted them to "get on with it!" It seems to be an interesting enough movie to keep J&TBs somewhat occupied, that is, WATCHING the movie! It's my impression that they're not making enough jokes because they're often watching the movie instead of mocking it. They seem to snap out of it now and then and produce a litany of ant puns. Now, I like puns, they're my kind of humor, but there's not much else in this episode, and it could really have used some variety. A high point is that Crow uses his "Kitty!" riff for the first time (upon seeing a dead lamb).
K10 - Cosmic Princess
I was so excited too see this episode. A year ago, when I was watching the KTMAs for the first time, I was horrified to discover that this one (and four others) wouldn't work. They worked in my brother's laptop, but he lives in Phoenix. So I finally ordered the five "broken" epsiodes from Skyroniter and decided to do a full series K04 to 1013 viewing run to celebrate the true completion of my collection. This being the first of my formerly unavailable episodes, I was pretty excited. I was also, however, pretty tired. I admit that this may have had an effect on my enjoyment of the episode, but I will wait for another time to give it another chance. I'm applying a lot of will power to resist the urges to watch any episode but the one next in line. This is a bit tough when I read quote threads and others' reviews, but I've stayed faithful so far. I think this episode suffered from the same phenomenon of the guys watching the movie instead of riffing on it. In all reality it is extremely boring, yet it seems to have so much noise and goings on that the guys are either dazed by it all or are having trouble fitting anything in edgewise. It took me forever to get all the way through 'cause I couldn't keep awake and my overall thoughts on the episode are BORE CITY USA.
I feel a little bad 'cause when I read all the "least favorite episode" threads, I'm always thinking, "Well, it's not really that bad, is it?" But I can definitely feel the burn of a not so hot episode right now. As I said earlier, I don't remember having any adverse reactions to the KTMA eps when I watched them initially. When I got my full series set, I had not watched very many epsiodes, mind you. I'd watched the show back in around '93-'96 but didn't remember much. Then last year I started watching the episodes the video store had on VHS and I remembered how great the show was. All I had was I Accuse My Parents, Mitchell, and The Brain that Wouldn't Die through the video store, but I could just feel how much I wanted to see each and every episode. So, I'm hoping that I'm not jaded now that I've seen so many episodes superior to the KTMAs. I was hoping very much to approach the series again with as fresh a mind as the first time. But I guess you only have one first time.

K11 - Humanoid Woman
I remember liking this episode when I first watched it. I think it held up pretty well in the face of how impatient I may be getting with the KTMA episodes. The riffing had high points and low points, but was mostly interesting. This movie seems like it could have made a good season three epsiode and I'm curious as to why they didn't choose it to be reriffed. It's so odd and dumb yet without being goofy. Well, it's like a subtle goofy, not the over the top Guiron goofy. The riffidge potential of the clone lady's hair and the asymmetrical facial hair is huge enough to have warranted a season three treatment. Then there's the killer soap suds near the end! But I suppose if they were wanting to redo some of the movies but wished to be selective, I'm glad they chose the Fugitive Alien movies over this one. I've also never argued against the Gamera onslaught; I think it really drives home the idea that the Mads are not just experimenting, but genuinely torturing! And sure, in a way, it is torture for you the viewer, but that gets you deeper into the experience and puts you on Joel's side, which is ideal, I would think.
So, I got lax on my silly nicknames list. I'll try to update it soon. Sorry. Night night.

In all reality it is extremely boring, yet it seems to have so much noise and goings on that the guys are either dazed by it all or are having trouble fitting anything in edgewise. Holy cow, I can't believe I forgot to say this about Cosmic Princess! One of the worst/annoying/distracting things in this movie is the MUSIC! It's always blaring and punching whether something or nothing is happening. It's like they told the music person, "No, you won't be able to screen the film before or during your scoring process. Just give us lots of punchy horn stuff!"

Oh, yeah. If you are bothered by annoyingly inappropriate music, watch out for "Legend of the Dinosaur". The guys even complain about it in the theater, more than once. It is just SO wrong for what's happening on the screen and so loud, I couldn't figure out what the phrack was going on. Maybe when I watch it again I'll be able to concentrate better, but...
I remember kind of actually _liking_ "Cosmic Princess", the episode, though. I dunno. I think it's the Star Trek references, the goofy space jokes, and the snarky quips about how horrible the actors/special effects are, that get me. And we've got Brian Blessed as the villain...who deserves better, of course.
Humanoid Woman is kinda neat, too. I get the feeling I'd like the movie itself if the translation/dubbing job had been done better--it's weird, but in an _intriguingly_ different way. I think I'd also like to read a translated version of the book/story it was based off of. (It has the feel of something that came from a book. I could be wrong, but it reminds me of that.) It was neat seeing a type/style of sci-fi writing that you don't normally see, from a different country from the normal's viewpoint. That, and I felt genuinely sorry for the main character.
You're basically doing what I did, by the way--I watched several episodes in a row whenever I got the chance. But I didn't write down notes on each one while I could still remember, is my mistake. A heh heh heh. :P

I have a feeling I was too hard on Cosmic Princess. I blame myself.
I really should have waited until I was more awake. I probably didn't even hear most of the riffs 'cause I was constantly falling asleep, waking, and rewinding. And you have to be really be into these eps to get much out of them. I'm glad I'm taking notes, but I wonder a bit if my opinions are arbitrary since they may be based more on what's up with me than the quality of the episode. Perhaps I'll get better at reviewing as my trek continues. I can hope for that.
And by the way, Cleolanta, since I've noticed you're a stickler for spelling among other things, I'd like to apologize to you and anyone who notices for how I can't seem to spell episode the same way twice. Most of the time I catch it, but hey, I care, but I kinda don't. Know'm sayn?

I also sort of have my own code for comma usage . . . I also like elipses . . . I've been trying not to use them since I'm pretty sure I'm not using them as I should.
I have a degree in English, and I was actually one of the oddballs that didn't give a crap for Shakespeare class but LOVED to diagram sentences, yet I also couldn't care less that this is a run on sentence with at least one comma splice. I love grammar, but I don't really care if I'm doing it right! Go fig!

K12 - Fugitive Alien
Super! I liked this one quite a bit. Also, in hopes of preventing a snooze-wake-rewind session mid-episode, I watched this one in parts. I figure when the show was originally airing, one got breaks, which are probably necessary. And when you've got ADD like I do, you need breaks. No, I'm not joking about having ADD. If you feel like arguing about whether ADD exists or not, I'm not interested. So I got 45 minutes in and took a break to go to work. I think the show is back to improving again. It was just Tom and Joel in the theater, but they really did a good job. I think their jokes got more creative in this episode. I noticed them making a lot more references to various songs, shows, Yul Brynner, etcetera, and just having more cleverness all around. I liked this riff from Tom especially: "It's a Japanese Polka Party with Lawrence Welkasaki!" The timing was great on that one, which is good to see since so often they have a riff but the item being riffed is often off screen once they get the joke out. Previously it has seemed that they, Josh in particular, would often say something unfunny mostly just to say anything at all. This ep just had more jokes and jabs. Joel and Josh seemed more confident and, dare I say, bold! Bold? BOLD! I mean, previously Joel in particular sounded timid, like he didn't want to interrupt your movie too much. In this ep they really go for it and put their jokes right in with good timing. As the KTMAs go, I think this is another highly recommendable one.
Then I must praise the movie itself, it's just perfect for making fun of. <-- Comma splice! I just love the strawberry blonde curls flowing from under the Raider helmets. And then there's the character I like to call "Little Lion Man"! He's the guy lounging and eating grapes or something in the second epis-- I mean, second half of the movie. He's the ruler or whatever, and he just reminds me of a cartoon lion boy. I always crack up just looking at him. His face, his hair, his helmet, his voice: all hilarious. Ooh, and I can't forget Joe's "Hahahahaha! ::while twisting head around manically:: You're stuck here!" I'm certainly glad they revisited this one in season three and I really look forward to seeing that episode.
Another improvement in this episode is that they seem to have gotten better at timing their theater exits. Previously I was getting rather peeved with the long stretches between the moment they left the theater and the moment the door sequence would kick in. I wonder if Josh just realized, or maybe someone told him, that once the little light started blinking (or whatever it might have been ) they didn't need to hop up and go, but that they had a whole minute and a half a minute to go before the doors closed. I'm blaming this on Josh, I suppose, because he seems to be the one with his eye on the commercial sign while in the theater. He often works it into a riff on the movie and it just doesn't work. I am glad that this practice did not last long. While I have that concept on the page, I'll segue to the other beef I have. I can't wait to stop hearing about mango juice. Josh, it isn't funny and your voice sounds stupid when you say it. Besides it makes no sense; in what way could being rubbed with mango juice be luxurious? I don't know a ton about mango juice, but I suspect it would be quite sticky. The drinking of mango juice, or at least Naked juice mango-wango or whatever, on the other hand, is great. Great, Tom is a ladies' man, but that's not as interesting as the more suave character he would become, and I'm looking forward to that Tom Servo.
I had to do some griping, but I tried to be more positive this time. I feel like the board has been quite negative recently, what with folks going on and on about which eps they hate and all the Rhino poopie (or perceived poopie) and whatever else. Let's all resolve to have more enjoyment today, won't we? Get involved with the board contest or your local "quote thread" and have a blast! Yay!

Okay, I've tiled my faxes and dashed my wishes, now it's my weekend and I'm ready to watch more episodes!
K-13 SST: Death Flight
I think this movie must have more star power than any other MSTed film! Wow. Anyway, Daddy-O's doesn't say so, but I figure this has gotta be a made-for-TV thriller. The roster of past-their-prime celebs speaks to that if nothing else does. For what it is, it's an entertaining movie. With a capital "for what it is", mind you. This is the kind of entertainment that you watch while thinking the entire time, "This is terrible. I hate the faces of these people. I should change the channel. But I know nothing is on. This is numbing my mind. I should do something else. I should probably clean something. Well, it is kind of thrilling I guess. It's better than cleaning, for sure . . . Oh, but I hate their hair-dos . . . (etcetera)." Ah, Burgess Meredith, are you actually always drunk or do you just always sound like it? In this ep, my favorite, most funny moment was actually not picked up by the brains. Their copy of the movie was probably of better quality than my boot of their episode, so they probably didn't mishear it the way I did. I'm pretty sure Burgess' character name is Woody Bassett, but when I heard it, well, it went something like this . . .
Grinning guy: Whatsyerface, please meet the Wooly Bastard!
Whatsyerface: ::gasp:: You're The Legendary Wooly Bastard? Hi!
Burgesh: Yesh, yesh. Thash me.
As for the Brains part of the deal, I think this was another good episode. They definitely have something worth setting your VCR for by this time. The host segments are getting more interesting, well sometimes. The Mads segment was really great. Clay has just returned from the Mad Scientists' Convention in Vegas where he won loads of funding by playing keno. The best part about it is Trace's delivery; he has a superb presence. He sounds totally legit even though he's doing a very hammy and subtly silly sketch. Josh, in comparison, looks far less confident and more amateurish. I've long felt that Trace was my favorite performer on the show, but I never really qualified that feeling with any hard evidence, but this sketch is very confirming and I can understand why I like him so much. As a performer. I mean he's a good looking guy, but . . . So! This is the first episode that features fan mail! Yay!
By the way, if anyone reading this thread feels the impulse to reflect with me or get snarky with me, go ahead! I'd love the company, so to speak, er write, well, "so to to type".

I decided I needed a checklist to help me keep track of which eps I've watched and which I haven't and also to glance at for reference (e.g. "How many episodes till I get to watch an ep I haven't seen yet?"). I also decided to number it so that I could guage how far I've come and how far I've got to go. The really cool thing is that my total number of "episodes" is exactly 200! Now, I know what you're saying. You're saying, "But warwilf, there are only 195 episodes available to fans! You can't have 200 episodes!" But, I'm including some extra-type stuff in my full series run. I plan to watch MST3K: The Movie after season 7 and I'm counting that. I also got the four available "rough cuts" from Skyroniter and I decided that I'd watch those as well as the broadcast versions of 503, 505, 1010, and 1013. I plan on watching the broadcast version followed by its rough cut version for the most direct comparison. So that makes five more "episodes" or "experiments" or "features", if you will, that will be part of this whole journey. I've watched ten eps so far! Now (like, right now) I will soldier on and watch Mighty Jack!

This is _so_ similar to what I did (watching them all in order, some of them still unseen and new to me, and "counting down how many episodes until I get to see a new one")--the whole nine yards!
Only I watched a whole bunch of episodes in a row WITHOUT taking any notes, and didn't even realise I _should_ have been doing so until I hit the end of KTMA, by which time it was too late.
Crap.
Well, I wish you good luck for the both of us, weird as that sounds. I included MST3K The Movie as part of my run too (actually I'm not done yet; I'm on Season 8) and at the same time period you placed it. I only have two rough cuts--Swamp Diamonds and Sinbad--and I haven't done them yet. I have a whole DVD full of "MST3K Extras" and it's on there; so I'll watch it when I get to that one, _after_ all the normal episodes. (I couldn't watch the same movie exactly twice in a row. You're braver than I am. I had a hard enough time sitting through most of the Sandy Frank things _whole seasons_ apart from each other...)
With Mighty Jack, especially KTMA version (although the Season 3 one did this to me as well), lemme warn ya: You ARE going to encounter "snooze-wake-rewind" syndrome with this one. Except I didn't rewind. The movie is INSANELY confusing and therefore coma-inducing if you're at all sleepy. Me, I was wonked out on painkillers that "may cause drowsiness" (as has been joked around this board, "That's the same condition they were in when they MADE the movie!"), lying down in a _way_ too comfortable position on the couch, and it was late at night.
As a result I missed at LEAST half of the movie. (Both versions. I kept wonking out during the Season 3 rendition as well). To this day I have even less idea of what happened in that movie than the average MSTie, because not only is it confusing, but I flat out _missed_ huge chunks of footage. Now, I would've been likely to fall asleep anyway because of the medicine, but the movie itself is partially to blame, too. (Sure, I could go back and watch it again properly. But for a MSTie, I have a low, wimpy pain threshhold when it comes to bad movies. If this was Doom/Castle Wolfenstein, I'd be on the "Please Don't Hurt Me Mommy!" level.)
DON'T LET THIS HAPPEN TO YOU.
I'm tellin' ya: Have caffeinne on-hand/already in your bloodstream, obnoxious neighbors playing loud music next door and sit up straight. 'Cos otherwise you _will_ miss parts of this movie. If you're determined to _really_, truly watch, pay good attention to, and remember enough details about to review EVERY single episode: Drink cappucino for this one. Seriously.
...or maybe it's just me. It's not that it's really a _boring_ movie. Stuff happens. It's just that I can never tell what, and after a while my attention wanders so far away that I'm in dreamland. Confusion translates to boredom for me, after a bit. I mean, if I can't understand anything of it then I have absolutely no interest, and....snorrreee... Even the fact that it's colourful and there are relatively nice-looking Japanese guys in it isn't enough to keep me awake. It's nowhere _near_ as confusing as City Limits or Fu Manchu. Yet it knocked me out anyway, like an elephant tranquilizer straight to the brain.
(thumbs up) Ganbatte! Or however you spell that. :P

Sorry about the double-post. I gotta say, I love the Fugitive Alien movies too. That's one I _didn't_ mind seeing twice--although I like Fugitive Alien 2 somewhat better. But the first one's also good. "Little Lion Man"...that's great. I can't remember if I had any cute nicknames for any of the characters... Well, aside from always misremembering Tammy as "Amy" (or "Amy Rose" for long) because the _first_ really hysterical EAR-PIERCINGLY high-pitched Japanese fangirl squeak voice I heard, that I can specifically remember by character name, was Amy Rose yelling "SONNIIIKKUUUUUU!!!!!!" at the top of her lungs as she chased groupie-ish-ly after Sonic in "Sonic Adventure" for Dreamcast. She had exactly the same annoying pitch of voice and the same even more annoying giggly over-worshipping-of-a-guy attitude as Tammy had for Ken, so no wonder they reminded me of each other. Also, Tammy wears pink....ish, and Amy _is_ pink. :P
But I kid the Fugitive Alien movies. I really like those, among the MSTed movies--even though they're technically not movies. They're colourful, silly, fun, they have science fiction and humour, things actually happen, characters _have_ personalities even if they are cliches, and I always liked that one older (alien?) officer guy. Colonel Yurulen or however you spell that. You haven't really seen him in action yet; the stuff that makes me think he's cool is mainly in Fugitive Alien 2. (He doesn't even show UP in the first one until near the end, after all.) I dunno. He's just one of those MSTed characters who grabbed me for some reason. (shrug)
And I love SST Death-Flight. It's a fun movie--I have a soft spot for disaster movies, even when very badly done (hey, disaster movies are usually _suspenseful_ without actual gore, which is the way I LIKE to be scared)--and the riffing is fun, and so are the host segments as you mentioned. I love the very _idea_ of a Mad Scientists' convention, (there was a "Villains' Convention" on Kim Possible once and I instantly thought of this episode...) and in fact things from that sketch made their way into at least two other MST-related things I wrote: I'm pretty sure I mentioned how many times Forrester "blew up" the building in one of my "Season One" style text MSTings, and in my actual MST fanfic, the money Forrester won from gambling actually played a pivotal role in moving the plot forward...
Which is the one where they're not really mad scientists, they're just "mildly-peeved researchers"? I love that line too. I've used it in public to non-MSTies and cracked the _whole_ room up. Twice. (To two different crowds, several months apart from each other.) Seriously. Who says the KTMA's aren't any good? ;)
Just...all the stuff with horrible evil secretive villians actually having their own businesses and guilds and being all like "Hey, yeah, nice to see you", _normal_ about their villainy...that in general just makes me smile, as a concept. Being kicked out of the "Mad Scientists' League" (or was it "guild"?) because they're just mildly peeved researchers. Hee hee hee...
Yeah, I know I'm rambling, but hey! You wanted people to say nice things about the show and have a positive attitude in this thread, so that's what I'm doing. Actually I love the whole feel of the KTMA era in general--despite its flaws that I can quite easily see (I'm with you on the whole "mango juice" thing--but don't worry, he tones down the Ladies' Man bit by Season One) and will take ANY opportunity I see to say nice things about it at the drop of a hat. Heh. ;) And it's nice to get to discuss those episodes with any detail at all. They don't really get talked about all that much...
