Just a reminder that Shazam! came out on home video today, and watching it for the third time at home, I can confirm that YUP this is the best comic book movie of the year. Like, it's not even close.
Of course, it didn't hurt that Hellboy, Dark Phoenix, and Men in Black: International were all balls, but here we are.
I think Joker is the only one left this year? Man, 2019 has been a seesaw for these movies, running from MUST SEE AGAIN of Shazam! and Endgame, the "not bad"ness of Captain Marvel and Far from Home, all the way down to the "That's really the movie you made?" of the afore mentioned three. What a ride of confusion.
Oh, and Hulk came out on 4K last week. MJ is happy.

So...that Hall H thing happened today... No big deal... Marvel only confirmed dates for five Phase Four movies! We already roughly knew about the two that were coming out next year, but now they're locked in and dated. So for those playing along at home (and I know Mod City will be VERY interested in one of these titles), the next five MCU movies are: Black Widow Eternals Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness Thor: Love and Thunder Taskmaster is confirmed as the villain in Black Widow. The Mandarin is confirmed to be the villain in Shang Chi (for all you Iron Man 3 crybabies out there). Scarlet Witch will play a supporting role in Doctor Strange. Natalie Portman will return for Thor 4, and it's confirmed that Jane will become the female Thor! Also they talked about the upcoming Disney+ slate of TV shows: The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, WandaVision (directly tied into Doctor Strange), Loki (will follow the alternate Loki from Endgame), What if...? (Starring Jeffery Wright), and Hawkeye (with Kate Bishop. They also confirmed that Black Panther 2, Guardians 3, and Captain Marvel 2 will be later in Phase Four, but nor dates. They also confirmed Fantastic Four...and.... ....and.....then.........they dropped THIS bombshell........ Mahershala Ali has been cast as Blade in the MCU! Whether it's for a movie or a series, I'm not sure, but hell yes! However this casting is a huge FU to the Netflix shows, since Ali played Cottonmouth on Luke Cage. I guess they're getting retconned.

I am very very curious to see what Chloé Zhao does with a big-budget Marvel movie (The Eternals). Her work has been very small, very intimate and character-driven, very much about the modern American West. They are fictionalized true stories, documentary-like. My initial thought was that she was a strange choice, better suited to a Logan type story, than one with God-like figures with a connection to Thanos (who has Deviant blood in him). BTW, The Rider is incredible.
Interesting that they are bringing the Mandarin to Shang-Chi. Fu Manchu has been a rights nightmare for Marvel, so it would make sense to replace him with one of their own (if that's indeed what they are doing)
And Kate Bishop? YAY!
Frankly, the Blade news interests me, not in the least.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness Hell. Yes. Doctor Strange II was pretty much confirmed without it being official, but I was still hoping for some kind of confirmation at CC. It sounds like they're going to use Strange to further develop the multiverse concept, which makes sense. It seems like there's a large canvass to play with there, and with Cumberbath and Derrickson both coming back, I'm definitely looking forward to it. As for it being the first "scary" MCU movie? That's fine, even though I'm not a modern horror guy. I think the last horror movie I saw in the theater was the Blair Witch Project, if that tells you anything. When it comes to horror movies, give me a Friday the 13th marathon of the first six movies and I'm good to go. I haven't even seen any of Derrickson's horror entries. And while I'm not banking on it, I'd love to see Tilda Swinton return in some form. She was such a great part of the first movie, and even her cameo in Engame was one of my favorite parts. Just her line, "Strange is supposed to be the best of us..." was powerful. She adds so much to this part of the MCU. Still, I'm looking forward to it! God what a long wait, though. Wesley Snipes is excellent (and underrated) in the first two Blade movies, but I'll definitely check this out. I don't know Ali at all, but it's a fun character, and one that could find his way into pairing up with Strange at some point. I'm not wild about casting from another Marvel property, but I guess it is what it is. Otherwise, I'm really curious about the Eternals. I know pretty much nothing about them, although they are connected to the Inhumans, right? I hear that didn't go that well on the TV side of things, but I never watched it so I wouldn't know. I like how the first slate of movies seems kind of disjointed. Kind of like the original Phase I movies were. A mishmash that may connect more clearly as the years go on. On another note, I did see Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse. I can also take or leave animated flicks, but this was pretty good. The little differences between universes was pretty cool. Was probably really good on the big screen, though.

For Shang-Chi I like Tony Leung as the Mandarin, but I do not get Awkwafina, her popularity. She has a terrible voice and an irritating manner. I don't know who she's playing but there are two primary female characters -Shang's half-sister and his lover Leiko Wu and she's wrong for both of 'em. Maybe they're adding a wacky side-kick?
And yeah, Spider-Verse was great on the big screen, but an almost overwhelming visual feast.

Not sure if I should be surprised or not, but man did that seem like a tenuous arrangement to start with. Spider-Man has been one of the best parts of the MCU since his introduction, having him yanked away from that sure seems like it will throw a wrench in the narrative (I haven't seen Far From Home, by the way). They just got a ton of characters back with the 20th Century Fox deal, now they lose one of their most popular. It's a shame. I don't blame Sony. I get it. But it's hard not to feel like they dropped the ball on this.

Disappointing news. I wonder if this is just a stand-off and one is waiting for the other to blink. I can understand Sony not wanting to give up half the profits. Give Disney a little more $$, a reward for their help in giving the character a boost (being tied in with the Marvel U and that continuity didn't hurt). But 50% is outlandish.
The other rumor buzzing about is that there could be another F4 film in the future with Peyton Reed directing. If true, just get it right this time. And if or when you do Galactus... don't make him, or rather, hide him behind a freakin' cloud!

Disney swung their dick around, because they knew Sony needed them more than Disney needed Sony. Sony just wouldn't suck it.
But Sony still isn't the good guy, because they still need to prove they're not incompetent. Short of letting the Into the Spider-Verse team shepherding everything Spidey related from here on out, that's an uphill battle.
But first word I hear of the franchise crossing over with Venom and Morbius means Sony can go flapjacks themselves.

That moment when Spidey realizes he's leaving Kevin Feige for Avi Arad, Amy Pascal, and Tom Rothman.

I realize it's not a direct parallel situation, but I guess I should have been expecting this after Disney reversed course on the whole James Gunn firing thing. Didn't think that would ever happen, either, but it did. But at least the MCU will still have Spidey in the fold.
