Moonraker
Considered along with Man with the Golden Gun as one of the bottom of the barrel Bond adventures. One of the more successful and bigger attempts to cash in on the Star Wars/sci-fi craze of the late 70s. However, unlike Close Encounters or Superman, it falls incredibly flat. In this epic, (with the only parallels to the novel being characters named Hugo Drax and James Bond) Bond is on the case of a missing space craft which takes him from California, to Venice, to Brazil, and all the way into outer space. Along the way he learns of the thief's plan to destroy the world (again) and recreate the world in his own image. Fill in other plot elements of the Spy Who Loved Me throughout, and that's Moonraker. This is truly bad for Bond, and easily the most over the top Bond movie of all-time. From the wacky gadgets that Bond and both his CIA gal get, the shoehorned attempts at humor, (such as an owl doing a "double take"), and the outer space battle that looks to be done by Industrial Heating and Plumbing. To compound that the narrative by Christopher Wood is completely unoriginal, having several parallels to the Spy Who Loved Me (also by Wood) from a villain reshaping the world in his image, to a foreign agent love interest, even a sexy helicopter pilot among other things, and of course, Jaws; who starts out as a strong bad ass then turns into comic relief pussy by the end. Heaping on even more garbage to this turd of a Bond film is the leads poor acting performances by a wooden, not really appealing, Bond girl in Lois Chiles and monotone boring mix between Hitler and Karl Stromburg from the previous movie by Michael Lonsdale as Hugo Drax. Even returning actors Moore (Bond) and Richard Kiel (Jaws) seemingly lost their zest for the product and coast through the movie on cruise control. Then there is the poor dated disco music and other minor problems. There are only a few redeeming factors in this movie such as the wonderful Amazon locations and short use of the secondary Bond theme. This movie is the worst in the series. TMWTGG at least had a good performance by Christopher Lee, and other contenders weren't nearly as cheesy, corny, and over the top. Moonraker has nearly nothing positive about it, and everyone involved should spank themselves harshly. Despite all this, it became the highest grossing Bond movie until GoldenEye fifteen years later. The acting, story, comedy, and sci-fi elements makes this become over bloated and an unpleasant experience. Worst Bond movie EVER! *
