1) Raging Bull. We all know why. 2) Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. This movie is awfully special to me. I'd be hard pressed to come up with another movie, of any era, that juggled side-splitting humor with a sentimentality that was genuine. 3) The Empire Strikes Back. Best sequel ever? No, that would be Godfather II. But this is likely the second best sequel. 4) Caddyshack. Four A-list comedians at the height of their powers give us the most quotable sports movie of all time. Sorry, but Airplane is amateur hour next to Caddyshack. 5) Die Hard. Any movie that's been ripped off as much as Die Hard simply has to be great.

In no particular order:
Raging Bull
Indiana Jones films
Evil Dead 2
Ghostbusters
Once Upon A Time In America
Honourable mentions:
Die Hard, This is Spinal Tap, The Shining, Back to the Future films, Terminator, Naked Gun, Blade Runner
At first I agreed with the idea that the 80's was awful, not just for movies, but everything. But the more you think about it there is loads of great stuff, just shamefully there was tons of chaff that seems to be better remembered, that maybe applies more to music than films.

Glad someone else likes Once Upon a Time in America here...
Planes Trains and Automobiles, Clue and Die Hard were all good movies, though I wouldn't call them great. I might also add Bull Durham to the list.

Oh I forgot about anime in all my lists so far. Akira, Wings of Honneamise and My Neighbour Totoro were all wonderful films as well. Don't think any would make my top 5 but top 10 aye!

I just typed a long message explaining why all of these films are great and it got deleted when I had to re-log in , so here is the paraphrased version. Wholeheartedly agree with most, especially Blade Runner and The Thing Videodrome Platoon Salvador Evil Dead Return of the Living Dead River's Edge The Beyond Blue Velvet Poltergeist American Werewolf in London Scarface (I was into it before the hip hop craze) Some 2nd tier, yet still classic movies IMO: Dragnet The Principal Bad Taste The Hidden Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 Scanners Legend Phantasm 2 I could go on and on. I think the 1980s might look bad when it is stacked up to the 1970s, which was a magical time in film making. Still, the 80s had plenty or gems.

It's understandable if it's too hard to name only five mind, it's a great list!

Call me a non conformist, I never really go in for the whole list thing. I suppose I could craft one but it would be constantly changing. I was more trying to point out that the 1980s provided many a great film. So many in fact, that trying to pick just 5 is impossible for me. And that is true of the 70s and 90s as well.
But I think I can confidently say Blade Runner would be #1, the rest fluctuate.
