I absolutely LOVED seeing the Lion King. The opening number was great. It kind of went downhill from there for me.

Just went to New York yesterday with my mom and sister to see the fairly new musical "Memphis". It's set in Memphis in the racially divided '50's. White guy likes black gal, falls in love with black music, tries to get gal on radio. His mother and her protective brother don't approve of the relationship.
Music was written (and lyrics co-written) by David Bryan of Bon Jovi. Songs are excellent and the singers' voices were awesome. I had to buy the CD. One of the best I've been to. I would recommend it to anyone who could go out and see it.
A bit of added excitement to the day: Michelle Obama and her daughters were in attendance. Secret Service everywhere.

Saw Pippin last year on Broadway (I've seen amateur performances which were all good), they changed it up a bit to have a circus-like theme. Excellent.
Just saw Book of Mormon this past Sunday. Hilarious. And the songs were great. I must say, those South Park guys know how to write tunes (I liked the South Park movie, also, and they always have good songs on the show itself).
Edit: I believe this was Andrew Ranells (sp?) singing "I Believe" from BoM.

Saw "Million Dollar Quartet" a few weeks ago in New Haven, CT. About the night Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins were all in the studio together. They did a fantastic job. The one doing Elvis did the voice and the mannerisms pretty well, and the one playing Jerry Lee (put her down, Jerry Lee) was a hoot. The one playing Perkins did great on the guitar. I bought the CD and was very disappointed because the original Broadway cast wasn't as good, in my opinion. (If you're not actually seeing who's who, it's hard to tell them apart as they all sound alike - though Cash, of course has the deeper voice). None of them on the CD sounded like who they were supposed to be, though Cash came the closest (the Elvis guy was horrid). And, seeing it live, it's, well, more lively. The music seemed a lot duller on the CD. Edit: If anyone saw the 80's movie The Last Starfighter, the one who played the lead kid that was good at video games that they recruited to fight (well, young adult) played Johnny Cash originally on Broadway, he's the one on the CD, all growed up. Can you believe that? Anyway, the play was good.

My all-time favorites, which I've seen live several times, are Mamma Mia and Annie. I also really enjoyed Jersey Boys. I've seen other good musicals but can't think of any more names right now.

Went to New Haven again Saturday night to see Motown. Good stuff. You know going in, of course, that the music is going to be fantastic. It follows Berry Gordy over the years and his development of Motown records and his relationships with various performers. Mostly Motown songs, with a few originals thrown in that were written specifically for the play. The guy who played Gordy had a phenomenal voice, and the kid who played young Gordy and also a young Stevie Wonder and a young Michael Jackson did an awesome job, especially as Jackson. I think he actually had a better voice than Michael did at that age (Michael, in my opinion, tended to yell more than sing for the most part when he was a kid, he got better, obviously). Anyway, great show. And of course, everyone in the audience had a great time and sang along. There was a funny part in the show when "Diana Ross" was doing a show in Vegas, and she got some audience members to sing with her. She asked where they were from and they said the town in CT where they were from and she said to the first woman, "Wow. All the way from CT for a Vegas show? That's a long way." Then to the other guy she said, "Wow. Two people from CT? What are the odds?" That got a laugh from the crowd. Cute.

All-time favorite musical has to be Spring Awakening, I was lucky enough to catch a local performance of it years back. Good stuff! I had originally only ever heard the original cast recording and seen a bootleg on Youtube, a professional production of it is like a dream of mine
