Going to the CT show last night, reminded me of the 80s club scene in the Twin Cities area. Not only did we have Hodgson, Lizz Winstead, and others doing comedy, but we had Husker Du, Prince, and others performing live music. I was never allowed into the bars, because for most of the decade I was pre-fetal. Then of course, there is The Replacements. Who I remember reading about in the ACEG recently (one of the obscure references). Just great music in that post-punk/MTV era. They produced the ultimate anti-music videos, with Bastards of the Young and others. They really continued improving until they hit their magnum opus with Tim. (produced by Tommy Ramone) After that things went south, but they were great up until then. So whaddya all think of the 'Mats? Kiss Me on the Bus from the OGWT

Always liked "I Don't Know" from Pleased To Meet Me. I had a dubbed tape of Tim once upon a time when I was much younger, too. Good stuff. I hear they were quite the (drunken) show live.
And that "Bastards of Young" video is classic. Looks back to when MTV didn't suck.

Didn't the nickname "the 'Mats" come about because someone mistakenly thought the Replacements were called the Placemats?

Didn't the nickname "the 'Mats" come about because someone mistakenly thought the Replacements were called the Placemats? Something like that. Or maybe they were considered the "doormats" of the industry. I picked up "Tim" (one of my all time favorite records) and "Pleased to Meet Me" (recorded in my hometown).. and they simply sound fantastic.

Didn't the nickname "the 'Mats" come about because someone mistakenly thought the Replacements were called the Placemats? As I read it long ago the original fans of the band called them the Placemats as a nickname and it was shortened to The Mats.

Reviving an old thread. I previously was ' soundandvision' on this board. So, that's me up there. I wanted to give a recommendation to any Replacements fans still left out there: Color Me Obsessed: A Film About The Replacements. The documentary was released in 2011 and made its way around the country through 2012. It is on DVD now and available via Amazon Prime Instant. Watched it a few weeks ago, can't recommend it enough.
