Wow! Great Interview! I feel they could have done new episode with any era and not act like they need to explain why it's this era or it's this host, ete.

Very interesting! Glad he decided to come out of his shell a bit and talk about the show. And honestly, I can see why there were hangups about starting the show over again. Who would play those roles? It seems crazy complicated from a creative standpoint. You stand a decent chance of screwing it up good if you don't do it right.
And hey – he does have those KTMA episodes. Nice to hear we might at least see the host segments someday.

I think it makes a lot more sense of why the first Cinematic Titanic Episode was rushed out. I guess Joel didn't tell Jim that he already talked with former MST3k cast members about doing something together and Joel had to move fast before everyone went their seperate ways again. "Who would play these roles?" That's only a complicated question if the owner of said roles has a problem with the actors being considered. Again, there's probably more to this than either of them are willing to admit.

Jim has taken some lumps around here in the last year or so. So I'd like to publicly say kudos to him for having the guts to do this interview. And kudos to the boys at Satellite News for asking some good hardball questions. I imagine it would have been easy for them to throw soft-toss, as Jim could single-handedly shut them down.
I thought his answers were nicely diplomatic, and I was glad to see him answer the KTMA and Joel-departure questions on the record.
I'd love to be there in San Diego to see them all together again. Alas.

Does anyone know a good tape to digital conversion service? Maybe we need to take up a collection.

Maybe it's just me, but does Jim telling Joel in the end that he couldn't do it because he had to focus on making & launching the MST3K website seem like kind of a slap in the face to Joel to anybody else?

This one is just odd.
Somehow, I don't think Jim quite understood that question. And besides, I think the reason 104 remained "104" was because back then production numbers weren't considered that important. And even later when the show got popular, they felt there was no need to fix the numbering as fans had it all memorized anyway.

I have always felt like it's easy to pile on Jim Mallon because he handled the business piece (for the most part) and Joel was the creative mind driving the show in the early days. However, without Jim fighting for them, taking the arrows from HBO Downtown -- there would have been no MST3K. I refer back to this interview, conducted by Rhino in '06. It's a great (long!) listen. streamos.rhino.com/download/rhino/podcasts/mst3kextended.mp3s&v

Thanks Jim and Bravo Satellite News. Excellent interview. I've said before that I think Jim is pretty misunderstood and the fact that he doesn't speak out very often makes him an easy target. He still holds a lot of our hopes in his hands for those missing KTMAs, but at least it sounds like there's hope we'll see parts of them.

Maybe it's just me, but does Jim telling Joel in the end that he couldn't do it because he had to focus on making & launching the MST3K website seem like kind of a slap in the face to Joel to anybody else? Honestly, no, it doesn't seem that way to me at all. It's possible that I'm being overly sympathetic to Jim, and I'm sure a lot of people will disagree with this, but it seems to me like Joel was kind of impatient, and maybe a little too eager to get Cinematic Titanic started. Especially when you combine it with the story about how Mike Nelson asked Joel to do a Rifftrax, and Joel was supposedly going to launch CT within the next week or so. Seriously, I find it hard to believe that Mike asked that late in the game (especially with everyone asking to have Joel as a guest on Rifftrax), unless Joel took forever getting back, which is still kind of weird. As far as I'm concerned, it seems like Joel doesn't want to have too much to do with anything that isn't his baby. If you look at his history, even before MST3K, that seems to be the case. I'm not saying that's true, and I'm not saying it's necessarily a bad thing even if it is true, but it definitely does seem like a possibility to me.

I just got a bit of a "no, I don't think this new MST3K thing of yours is gonna work out. Now excuse me while I go make a new MST3K website and MST3K Flash toons and sell MST3K merchandise" vibe from it.
I'm sure there's a lot more to it than that, and stuff like what you said, Mannix. I try not to be too blindly loyal to Joel and Mike and the lot, heh. It's just that as an artist myself who's got strong views on artist's rights and copyrights and stuff, things like him and Joel not reaching and agreement and all the stuff going on with the new MST3K site rubs me the wrong way with little effort. :B
