"It's i before e except after c and when sounding like a as in neighbor and weigh, and on weekends and holidays and all throughout May, and you'll always be wrong no matter what you say!" - Brian Regan, Brian Regan Live
I think I'm going to start my own copy-editing/proofreading business. Just a little thing on the side for extra money, sort of like when I was a kid and I'd babysit... I don't think I'm anywhere near a formal business, though I will have business cards and a cute name - gotta make myself memorable! (Note to self: come up with awesome name.)
Plus, I already have a "client" who says he'll promote me all over the place. He's the director of 5th and 6th grade ministries at the church, and I've been proofing his sermon handouts for a few weeks now.
The idea came at a "TweetUp," a place for Twitter users to get together and mingle, network, meet people you've been following, meet new people to follow, stuff like that. Everybody had business cards with their info on them, for business card drawings and it's an easy way to make sure you can get in touch again with your new friends. It was my first TweetUp, and as such, I didn't have anything, so I frittered away some time when I got home on designing some cards... I had no idea what to put down as an occupation, as right now I'm a recent college grad who still hasn't found a steady job for more than 4 months at a time who fills in at the front desk at her church from time to time and temps every once in a while, and I figure these could act as a teaser resume of sorts. So I put down "Receptionist, Office Assistant, Writer, Editor, Grammarian," and it hit me. I could find a job as a copy editor, since my grammar nazi skills could finally be of use other than making me cringe at blatant spelling errors. And of course, there are no editing jobs of any kind to be found, so I started thinking I could just do it myself!
Right now, this is nothing more than another fun idea along the ideas of "Hey, wouldn't it be cool if I wrote a book," so we'll see. I might also make myself available to students at the junior college as a typist/proofreader. My English degree needs some exercise (it's actually still in the envelope - I haven't even framed it yet!).
