This may be a "make or break" season for my Canes. Just a couple years after winning the Cup, we are at a crossroads. If this season doesn't result in at least making the playoffs, I expect major retooling of the team and the perhaps end of line for coach Laviolette. Erik Cole is gone, traded for Joni Pitkanen to bolster defense. Cam Ward has to have a more consistent season in goal than he did last year. Sergei Samsonov has to continue the level of play he showed last year after his late season pick-up. Unfortunately Justin Williams is already injured, likely to miss almost all of the season. I'm ready! Last season I watched almost every game and I'm going to try to do it again.

Red Wings have lost Chris Chelios for six weeks with a broken shin. It's worse than was previously thought. Still I think the Wings are going to be good this year, and it will be interesting to see how the Blackhawks do too.

The Pens have already lost Gonchar... Whitney too, but he's not that effective IMO... and Sykora has been out with a groin injury, but that should be good soon.
Gonch is a huge loss, but rookie Goliogski (sp) looks great.
Blah blah I could go on. I love the Pens and I'm so happy its hockey season again!

The Red Wings didn't look so good losing to Toronto the other night. The final score was 3-2 but the game wasn't that close. Looked as though the Wings were sleepwalking through most of the game.

I hadn't seen that, but heard about it. Thanks for posting it. That was pretty funny. "What do we know? We're soccer guys."

Despite losing, my Canes played a pretty good game against the high and mighty Red Wings. I'm feeling fairly good about the start to the season. Unfortunately, due to the State Fair, we hit the road for a two week road trip. Hopefully they'll come out of it with a winning record.

Yeah, I'd rather we (the Canes) just get the big Western road trip outta the way early in the season, instead of during the crucial playoff-contention months later on. You know, before we get any more major injuries... And I'm quite fond of the new 3rd jersey we debuted, too - I think the uniform as a whole could use a TAD more red or something on the pants or gloves to accent it some (thought it had a little too much black overall), but I definitely like the design and the jersey itself.

So, four games into the season, the Blackhawks decide to fire their coach. This is why that organization hasn't been in the playoffs for so long. Look, Denis Savard was a good coach, true, he didn't have a lot of head coaching experience, but the Blackhawks already knew that. The team had a good preseason. So, they lost their first three games. Three games don't make a season. (My Red Wings lost their first game of the year, and they didn't fire anybody). One thing the press in Chicago has reported that it was a disagreement about who should be in goal. Over the summer, the Hawks signed Christobel Huet and they still have Nik Khabibulin on the roster as well.
The Hawks tried to trade Khabibulin but there were no takers, and Savard had been rotating the goalies, trying to see who would play better. Now signing Huet was NOT Savard's decision, that was Dale Tallon and the front office. Savard's job was to win games and play the guys who gave the team the best chance to win.
This is why the Blackhawks have been going backwards for years. Maybe new head coach Joel Quenville will get them into the playoffs, maybe he won't. But this could have been handled way better than it was. And Denis Savard showed a lot of class by taking the high road.

That coach wasn't going to last long once they brought Bowman on board. Not that I think he's going to start coaching the 'Hawks, but he's not going to stand for ignorance behind the bench, either.
The Blackhawks will get much, much better.

Today I travel to the big city (or at least our version of) with Blue Raja to catch the Canes versus Maple Leafs. First of only a couple games that I'll be able to attend this year. Hopefully Carolina can generate a bit more offense today than they did yesterday.

It's the Maple Leafs, I have a good feeling for you.
Finally, the Pens win one against an easy team. *eyeroll*
