Argue with him anyway. That's what I do.
Hulk still sucks.

Forget I said anything. George Bush was Gandhi, Jesus and the Great Gazoo all wrapped in one.
Sophie Scholl: The Final Days (2005) This is the true story of a young woman who was a member of the non-violent “White Rose” Nazi resistance group. The filmmakers painstakingly went through transcripts and what not to reconstruct her final days.
An interrogation sits at the heart of the piece, and it’s here that Nazi and democratic philosophies are debated -- it’s quite a fascinating discourse. There appears to be some Christ/Pilot connection being made here (Sophie’s interrogator offers her a way out, she refuses and he, literally, goes to the sink and washes his hands) which might seem heavy handed symbolism, but otherwise the movie is straight forward in it’s presentation.
I liked it - it’s about courage, standing up against tyrants, even at the cost of your own life. Julia Jentsch delivers a quietly powerful performance.
The Baader Meinhof Complex (2008) More fact based film making. The children of Nazi generation grow up, vow to keep fascism from raising its ugly head again, and become terrorists. They spout tired anti-establishment phrases and sound like petulant children when they do so. I'm not sure Baader even cared about the cause, he just liked to kill and have sex and cause chaos. All told, they were as bad as the fascists they professed to hate. About as far removed from Sophie Scholl and the true heroes of resistance as you can get.
Objectively I guess it's a good movie, but subjectively -- it made me sick and I can't say I even admire it the way I do other movies that made me sick.

actually, he did have a bit of a "great gazoo" governing style, that one.
martyrs (2008), something after reaperg's own heart. french gore movie with a twist at the end i won't reveal, a pair of young girls are abducted by a shadowy bunch of characters who proceed to torture them horribly. one escapes, then returns 15 years later with her gay lover to exact revenge on the torturers. she meets an unhappy end but her lover, who knows nothing about what she's up against, ends up captured by the torturers. it sounds a lot like "human centipede" or something of that ilk but it's actually got a fairly interesting twist at the end, if you can make it that far, which, it's pretty grueling so i found that to be a trick. on the other hand, the first half dragged on a bit and the movie seemed a bit too bent on being unpleasant without letup that it neglected its rising action and characterization. ultimately i thought its 7 out of 10 imdb rating was a bit too high but the premise it reveals at the end is interesting enough that i'd like to see it explored further, either in a sequel or in a ripoff by a better creative bunch.

Drive Angry 2011
Nic Cage stars in this exploitation style flick. Full of cartoonish violence and outlandish action. Good, clean fun! Actually not very clean and maybe not that good. OK... just fun!

Ed Wood 1994. Holy #^&%, how did I wait so long to see this brilliant film? Funny, sad, compassionate, almost a fairytale but...wow. Great performances, brilliant music supervision (no credit on that on screen, but I think Andy Hill may've been part of the team), really a different movie (as opposed to the stinking swamp of Hollywood sameness), and a crucial watch for MSTies. I've been tepid on Tim Burton, but this--geez, if you do one piece of art this good in your lifetime, you're forgiven every crappy other thing you do. Seriously catapulting itself on to my top 25 film list, better late than never.

^ yeah I love Ed Wood too. Martin Landau won an academy award (best supporting actor) for this and I've always thought 'well, what about Depp's portrayal?!', which I think is every bit as award-worthy as Martin's, and I think, even more so. Love the scene with Mike Starr where Ed is trying to interest Mike in one of his projects while Mike is chomping on a sandwich. When this originally came out on DVD it was quickly recalled due to, I think, some conflict in the bonus material. But after a few months or so, it appeared again, I think with that particular bonus removed

you've both definitely got a hallelujah from me on ed wood. definitely burton's finest (not that that's always saying that much), one of the top movies of the 90s, and a misty must-see. i'm tempted to join you in berating yourself for waiting so long, ILWC!

^ yeah but at my age, adding a film to your top films list is a rare pleasure--I'm just as glad I waited for this treat. I had it borrowed, but I just bought it off amazon--a film like this has to be savored over and over.

If your serious, here's a peace pipe - okay. Relax, breathe, lets be like George Harrison -- spiritually centered and cool, my forum brother. Lemming (2005)Compelling French... something. It seems a blend of psychological and supernatural thriller (but could that all be in their heads? I dunno). Some of the imagery is layered on a bit thick. I didn't feel it was a complete success, but I can't deny that it held my attention.

Might as well nip this in the bud right now.
It's OK to discuss opinions, but let's keep it clean, boys. No flaming and no flame-baiting. If I see any hint of fire, the sheriff is coming into town.

Yes Mr. Hand. I'm sorry. (I'm all for peace love and understanding) I forgot, needing something lighter, I also watched Underworld EvolutionI always found it the lesser of the first 2, but I enjoyed it a lot it this time out. It's weird - critics complain about how simplistic action flicks are, yet here they complain that Evolution is too convoluted (sometimes it seems you can't make a critic happy). I'm familiar with the premise so it wasn't confusing to me, and I liked how they fleshed out the complex histories. I wonder why Wiseman isn't directing the next one (and why it has 2 credited directors?)

I think Wiseman is committed to another project. A remake of Total Recall, I believe.

I think Wiseman is committed to another project. A remake of Total Recall, I believe. A remake not a sequel. That's seems a weird one to remake to me. I hope who ever does the next Underworld doesn't go overboard with the CGI. I'm not a CG basher, but one of the charming and cool things about the series -I felt- was all the practical effects Wiseman used. I liked seeing a real guy fly around the truck, and swoop in on that ship.
