Anyone else watch this show? I liked it in the beginning when Sam and Dean were just a couple of hunters, out for a little monster killing. Now they're invoking God and Lucifer and angels and all that, and I hate when writers do that, because when they do, they just make the "Grand Scheme" of things look really dorky, 'cause, let's face it, they have no idea what they're talking about. They make up these really stupid realities that just get too - I don't even know what word I want to use here, they just SUCK. TV writers don't make good "Creators", if you know what I'm saying. I liked it better when they stuck to ghosts and werewolves and such. The episode that was on tonight kind of took a break from all that grandiose crap and went back to their roots, when it was just Sam and Dean and they threw a litttle humor into it. (They forgot who they were for a while and didn't know they knew each other). I'm all for getting a bit serious and dark at times, and exploring the characters and all that, but they should just stick to small time demons and not try to explain the whole meaning of everything in the universe stuff. I'd rather they leave the unexplainable unexplained. Anyone have differing opinions? Or, anyone in agreement on that?

I always liked the "Vorlon" explanation of angels, from Babylon 5.
But I agree with you. Since everyone has their own preconceptions of a creator/being/whatever, no one writer's interpretation seems substantial. You'll always be left wanting more, sort of like a bad film adaptation of a book. The characters sounded different in your head, since the book gave you a greater degree of latitude in "observing" them than a movie would.
The only time including a supernatural heavy in a movie/television show really works is if it's a comedy or an obviously and/or intentionally campy-type show (i.e. MST: Did Pitch not synch up with your cosmic understanding? Of course not. Repeat to yourself it's just a show...) and you're not supposed to take the whole thing all that seriously in the first place.
So I kinda agree with you on that. Even though I have no idea what this show is.

I've always gotten the impression from the sparse episodes i've seen that its being written by fan-fic writers instead of real TV writers. Kind of like Buffy.

Because lord knows Joss Whedon's never made a living at his writing. Part of the problem with the "this week's creepy crawlie" stories is the repetitiveness. I've seen it on everything from Buffy to the X Files. Actually, that happens to every show format. The plot devices get really stale. So the writers try to expand the stories, give people a new reason to come back every week. The problem with that is that it can get out of control and even really silly. There's also a lot of pressure on a show by networks to bring in more numbers, which means more advertising dollars. But it often stretches these shows way past the credible point. For instance, what's up with the curse on the hospital in ER? Explosions, mass outbreaks, terrible disorders striking staff, etc. The show may have lapped itself in number of lives shown saved versus the people it has wiped out! I think that might explain why you so often hear the die-hard fans of a program insist the first few seasons are always the best. The writing is fresher and hasn't been as tainted by marketing studies, ridiculous expectations, and sheer boredom.

As a non-Christian I think I might have an interesting perspective here. For me, the greatest depiction of a higher power in film is in 2001: A Space Odyssey. If you don't completely humanize God and the Devil or go all "mind-blowing art film" style then the middle ground is sort of crap.
I think my fav comic book Hellboy does it well. God's just a vague benevolent force, there are many demons but no Satan, all the creatures have personalities, ect.

I'm a big fan of Supernatural. Right now I'm working my way through the Season 3 DVDs, where the storyline is getting more complex. I love the humor and the storylines, but for me the best part of the show is the relationship between Sam and Dean. They became characters that I could really care about. If the show ever loses sight of that, then it will really begin to decline. I'd still watch, but it wouldn't be as much fun.

I personally like that the show has been upping the ante every season. The show has been a combination of stand-alone stories and an overall storyline arc since the first episode. So I'm glad they resolved the "Hunting Yellow Eyes" arc in the first 2 seasons and advanced the arc storyline in the process. If they had dragged the initial "Hunting Yellow Eyes" storyline on for a lot of seasons (as The X-Files did with Mulder's search for his sister) with no resolution, that would've been a lot worse, IMO. And the upping Sam's power and abilities over time has worked for me too.
The only drawback I can think of with the upping the ante each season is where can they go next? Over the past seasons, they went from demons to "super" demons (Yellow Eyes, Lilith) to angels, and now have archangels set up as the next powerful thing - but then what will they do after that?

Ever notice on this show that wherever these guys are in the country they can get ANYWHERE else in, like, twenty minutes? Even their friend Bobby, wherever he lives or sets up camp or whatever, he can get to them in no time flat. He's in Arkansas, they're in Alaska -- I'll be right there guys!!!! Now THAT'S supernatural!
(Of course, now he's in a wheelchair, so it might take him a little longer).
(Yes, I know. It's just a show. They can't take too much time with these details... but still...COME ON!!!)

Paris Hilton!! They look like they're getting back into form with this show, letting the Apocalypse thing be something looming in the background for a while, and letting the chemistry of the two leads start to get back to what it once was, and not being afraid to be goofy once in a while. That's good.

Okay, they took my point I made in the post before the last one to a ridiculous level. Bobby's wherever the hell he is, the guys are looking for a poker game where you can win or lose years of your life. They tell Bobby over the phone what they're up to, and Bobby GETS to the game, PLAYS a few hands and loses, all before Dean gets to the next BAR?!

(...although that doesn't explain why he wasn't smart enough to get an anti-demon possession tattoo like they did.)

I liked the episode they had a few weeks ago where they were stuck in an alternate reality where they were in a bunch of TV shows and making fun of them.
The crime investigation show - "Only losers wear sunglasses at night." (or whatever term they used - dorks? I forget).
I especially liked when they made fun of the sexy doctor show - "Why are there GHOSTS on THIS show?" "I don't know." The fact that the ghost in the real show they were making fun of just happens to be played by the same guy that played their dad on their show made it all the more humorous. ;D

They really picked the wrong actor to play the young John Winchester. At one point Dean says something like, "Just now you reminded me a lot of my dad." My riff was - "Except a lot SHORTER."
The guy who played him on the show when he was still on was taller than both of them, and this guy was shorter. They expect us to believe he grew that much from his twenties? Edit: Okay, on second look, he wasn't that much taller. Bad observation on my part, but he was still too short.
Okay, just a show, but, really, that's just bad casting. Just sayin'.

Apparently battling the Devil is easy-peasy. Where the Hell do they go from here? We've just stopped the Apocalypse: It's Miller time! Back to business as usual, I guess.
