I found a nice little score of 70s European crime and epionage films this past month. High Crime is one of the best, but it's too bad that it came jacketless. By the way, I'm finally going to be seeing this on the big screen at the Los Angeles Italia festival's admission-free six-film screening of Enzo Castellari's movies (coinciding with the Oscars, Inglorious Basterds nominations, etcetcetc...Oh man, parking is going to suck that night!) in a few weeks. Art, food, movies at the Mann's Chinese, hot Italian actresses in expensive clothing...I'm pumped for this one. Anyhow, I'm watching The Warning right now. Crazy stuff.

Funny - on the first post I mentioned that if I ever got a blu-ray, I'd have to re-buy Dark City.... I did and I have. Found it on sale at Amazon for $8. I also ordered Push... both bluerays look great and I reviewed them on my blog... Push and Dark City on Blu-ray

I picked up Conan The Barbarian and Conan The Destroyer, and Red Sonja is coming to me for my birthday.
Maybe I'll throw in Krull to finish off the marathon.

We got New Moon when it came out. Nothing since then. I think we'll get Avatar when it comes out. I've not seen it though.

They released Elizabeth and Golden Age today on Blu-ray. I bought Elizabeth The picture looks pretty good, there is some graininess but the color and clarity is there. Hi def isn't a perfect medium though, it can struggle with banding (glow from a fire etc) and with this release there is some minor artifacting issues and aliasing (the scene with the blood in the water, going over a log looks horrible). So they still haven't created the perfect visual experience in home theater IMHO. This looks sharp but do think you could save your money on a purchase, the DVD looks fine and this release offers no new extras. To Blurayers, I'd say this is a rental. Also: Batman the Movie (1966) Special EditionBest Buy had it on sale for $9.98 so I picked it up as well. I imagine the bluray will expose some of the cheap FX even more than on DVD, but WTH, It's worth it for the new extras.

Maybe now that I have the Dark Knight - the Batman I always wanted - I have learned to accept and embrace all kinds of Batmans. The extras are really neat. The people who are reflecting on the show really brought me back. I was 5 when Batman first aired and back in those days a color TV was rare, most were in B&W so the first time I saw the bat in color was the movie and what a wow experience that was. It was interesting to hear others mention the same memory. Best Buy also had Wings of Desire from Criterion on Blu-ray, but it was $42, so I passed on it.

"Payday." A great 70s film featuring a young(er) Rip Torn as a selfish, self-destructive country and western singer. A fascinating look at the seedy side of the music industry and quite possibly Torn's finest performance ever.

Recently bought I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE / THE BODY SNATCHER at Big Lots in Harrisburg, PA, for $3. They also had another Val Lewton double-feature disc for the same low price. Great old horror films, with commentary tracks & trailers.

I saw Robocop on Blu-ra cheap... Uh, I guess I should have read this first... bluray.highdefdigest.com/1086/robocop_fox.htmlThat's not to say this new Blu-ray edition of 'RoboCop' looks like a million bucks. Far from it. Detail, while again superior to what's come before, still wobbles. Sharpness wavers throughout, making some shots look flat and lacking in depth (particularly any effects shots involving mattes, and just about all of the darker/nighttime scenes). There is also still some obvious noise in the shadows, and fine textures can turn into mush. Although compression artifacts are generally not a problem, edge enhancement is obvious, with ringing visible on the most highly-contrasted areas of the picture. Overall, while this fresh master is clearly superior to the old canceled disc, unfortunately this is just not a remaster on par with something like Sony's 'Fifth Element.' Simply put, I'd hoped for alot better. Yeah it's a strange looking movie. Did it always look this bad? I know the TV stuff was intended to look that way, but when Boddicker attacks Robo at the end, the difference in film from camera 1 to camera 2 is noticeable... (Grainy - clean / grainy - clean). Did Verhoven use different film stock or is this just in dire need of some top notch cleanup?

A local Blockbuster is going out of business and selling stock cheap. I bought a few... Luc Besson seems to draw a lot of ire from folks, but I love most of his work. Angel-A is a love story, film in black and white. An odd flick but I liked it a lot. Road Warrior: It has a paper thin plot, little dialog and yet it works. Whip It is just a joy I also bought the Crow (DVD) and Punisher War Zone on Blu-ray.
