Hi all, so over the weekend i watched Planet of the Apes for the first time (on the big screen too) and I realized, after watching it that this movie has about 4 or so often repeated riffs of which are
"get your hands off me you damn dirty ape"
"A planet where apes evolved from men??!" Classic Trace riff
"But it is not ape law"
and plays as a basis for most of the season 8 host segments and professor bobo.
With that said- what movies and/or tv shows play a heavy influence into some of the most used riffs?

I think THE most used riff (Joel Era) is: "I don't know how it works...I can't stop it..."
Which is the scene at the end of The Wizard of Oz, when the "wiz" can't control the balloon after it takes off without Dorothy.
If you're not a Frank Zappa fan, you may not get "Weasels Ripped My Flesh!" which is an album by Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, released in 1970.
Edit: By the way, if you haven't seen Planet of the Apes by now, you have to have a good excuse. Otherwise we'll assume you've been home-schooled or something...

I think seeing Planet of the Apes, The Wizard of Oz and 2001: A Space Odyssey are pretty much required. They did loads of riffs from those three films alone. Also Chinatown, which was the origin of the "My sister! My daughter!" thing, and also "Pretty nosy, kitty cat" and variations thereon.

They pull from everywhere, it'd be impossible to keep up. But as to which resource they pulled from the most, I'd agree with Bix's comment about the Wizard of Oz. The wizard floating off in the balloon was probably the biggest one, but other lines were used repeatedly as well: "How bout a little fire, scarecrow?" "Surrender, Dorothy" "There's no place like home" "OOooeeeoooo, OOOOhooo" (or whatever lol, chanting soldiers) "I'm melting, melting!" All those lines/sounds and more were used in many different mst3k eps. Truly 'required' I spose for a mstie. But then, who hasn't seen it? Which is probably also part of the reason they used it so much......although I always imagined one or two of the crew were hardcore wizard of oz fans Esp Joel, it seemed like he uttered an Oz reference in almost every episode.

ha private schooled hence no good excuse. only copy i had growing up was one the parents recorded off of tv, and i only ever watched part of it.
Though a simple riff, whenever someone is standing in a field alone "it's!" from Monty pythons flying circus

... and "how would you like it if someone picked your apples...?"
Another flick they borrow copiously from (and which I had not seen till very recently) is "The Princess Bride."
Lots of "Lord of the Rings" references, but way before Jackson did 'em.
Tons of Firesign Theater references, which if you don't know about them, it's google time!

In the Joel era, there were a lot of Mannequin riffs: "SWITCHER! You are one...sick...puppy."
In the Mike era, it was Road House.
Don't know why, but you might as well watch 'em.

Dirty Harry gets a lot of play.
"Did I fire 6 shots or only 5?"
"Do you feel lucky, punk?"
"It was Callahan! The big one! He did this to me!"

Apes also contributes the references to the Forbidden Zone. I seem to recall "ape killed ape" riffs, although that was a later Apes film.

Hans Christian Anderson.
"Anderson -- that's me!"

Yes, the movies mentioned are pretty much required to get a good chunk of the riffs used. But let's not forget you must also be well versed in your knowledge of old tv shows. Certain shows in particular were the source of many riffs, but that's a subject for another thread.
