Santa Claus Conquers the Martians
Time again for my annual viewing of this Christmas classic. Enjoyed it as always, great riffing all around.

The Alien Factor Watched for first time yesterday. Great movie for riffing, with ridiculous characters played by apparently novice actors and equally ridiculous aliens (loved the one on stilts). And, hey, it's the 70s. Can't go wrong, right? Well, I rated it only fair by CT's standards. Seems some great opportunities were missed or the riffing was too rapid-fire and non-cohesive. I so wanted a "Mitchell!" thrown in during the scene where the mag-reading, beer-swilling dude searches his house. I was cracking up just thinking about that missing riff. But hey, even a fair to midlin CT beats almost any other comedy entertainment for me. One other thing, was Joel goofier than normal for this live show? He was a highlight for me.
Couple more notes on the film: Obvious similarities to Galaxy Invader, which I've seen in Rifftrax form. Looked it up and found that they had the same filmmaker, Don Dohler. Not rushing out to acquire his "Alien Factor 2: The Alien Rampage" (from 2001) very soon.
It will be with mixed emotions that I watch Rattlers now because it's the only CT I have yet to see. Likely never to see another movie riffed by the majority of the MST3K crew again unless bootlegged copies emerge for the couple unreleased movies they riffed during shows (unlikely, but my fingers are crossed).

Rattlers
Another made-to-order riff-friendly flick and the now-former Titans deliver with mostly flying colors. Some great unforgettable characters in this one and none of them were the snakes. I place this one in the middle of the CT releases for a couple reasons: Some jokes are a bit too rapid-fire and lack cohesion (much like Alien Factor) and there were far too many innuendo-based snake jokes. But there was a Mitchell! in there, a fun surprise after I complained about the missed opportunity in the above post. Maybe I'm sentimental, but I wish more MST jokes could have flowed into CT. I love callback humor. All that being said, the positives far outweigh the negatives in every CT release. The few years they were together made me feel like a teenager/young adult again. Thank goodness I was able to catch one of their last live shows to meet them and experience their work first-hand. Bravo.

danger on tiki island
i watched this last weekend. the last half of it drags for me and i almost always fall asleep, so it's a good one to watch on sunday evenings. i hate to say that it drags, because there are some really funny riffs in this one. i like it; it just knocks me out almost every time.

I finally saw Rattlers this year because timez iz hardz. Love the scenes with the kids exploring and the domestic housewife in the kitchen, also the cobra hypnosis in the lab and how our hero is so Mr. Spock / In Like Flynn zen calm with practically magic powers coming just from knowledge of animal behavior. Still trying to wrap my head around the feminist photojournalist and her darkroom tent that somehow is lightproof but not snake proof. And the secret military log cabin. I hate that all they had to menace this insane 70s world is snakes and NOBODY HAD A SNAKE KILLING GARDEN HOE! My uncle kills snakes all the time. You get yourself a hoe and a forked stick, behead the hydra and lift with the stick in case you didn't really behead the hydra. That is how you kill a snake in Appalachia.
I wish they could release that Samson movie. It will always bug me that I can't see it.

Saw "Blood of the Vampires" again last week, as noted in my post on the MST General Chat board. Good riffing, lousy movie. And I have a feeling the blackface thing would get the whole thing banned in some circles, which may be a good thing.

I think I remember you being on the Cinematic Titanic forum at some point? Unless somebody else had that screenname? Agreed that the characters were a salient feature of Rattlers. What do you mean about the jokes being rapid-fire and lacking cohesion though? I thought Alien Factor was one of the strongest riffs CT did and Rattlers doesn't compare as well but is not as nasty as say, Frankenstein's Castle of Freaks or Doll Squad or Legacy of Blood. I'm a totally blind fangirl and loved them all, but I'll cop to liking much less the ones with more gratuitous T&A and sandy background scenes behind greasy and sleazy characters in dim to dark lighting. It's practically a 70s formula for movies that taint my soul: greasy faces + sand in the background + sand on the lens + one scene you can't see at all and it's not even the sex scene unfortunately because I hate all these people = sad, adulterated Euphoriafish The snake innuendo jokes bothered me not for being there at all but for their numbers. Kind of fun during the bathtub scene, not elsewhere. I never really liked the callback jokes in CT. One per movie is fun and gets a huge rise out of the audience, but when there's a running callback to Eegah as here, I'm kinda over it and get cynical about the pandering. I LOVED to hear them when I was the crowd at the live shows though, and this was a live-centric show so I can see how there's a place for them. Callbacks let a full house know they have solidarity with each other because they all remember the same great incredibly weird moment and funny joke that came of it. My own ranking of the CTs is: 1. War of the Insects 2. The Wasp Woman 3. Doomsday Machine 4. Blood of the Vampires 5. Danger on Tiki Island 6. The Alien Factor 7. East Meets Watts 8. Santa Claus Conquers the Martians 9. Rattlers 10. The Astral Factor (not on DVD) 11. Legacy of Blood 12. The Oozing Skull 13. The Doll Squad 14. Frankenstein's Castle of Freaks And I can't rank Samson because I didn't see it. My ranking criteria are that I like a good colorful spectacle with bright lighting, characters that are weird but not particularly immoral, and less sex even as innuendo unless it's honest and psychologically healthy. Teen smoochers in Attack of the Eye Creatures A-OK, Mitchell having casual drunk intercourse and cheating the prostitute out of money not so much.

A nice, new member here hooked me up with a copy of Astral Factor with live CT audio synced. I'm going to check it out and figure out how to share it, assuming it's quality. A quick iPad check makes me think it is.

Skyroniter, that is excellent news! Please pass along my thanks as I was at their live show here in St. Louis a couple of years back and loved their riff of Astral Factor. Hoping it's a good copy!

Watching it now. Whoever put it together did a nice job. The audio is good so far but obviously was recorded from the audience. The video fine. Its a relatively small mkv file at less than 700mb. Very funny stuff too! That's the most important thing.
Depending on how many would like it, I can share from Dropbox and/or torrent. Others can do same if the demand is there. And I'll put it up on MySpleen fairly soon.

I saw it live and was disappointed it never got released. Wish someone had one of Samson as well.

I saw "The Astral Factor" live in Arlington, VA and it was a great show. I hope someone out there maybe did this with the other two unreleased shows. I own every released CT either digitally or on DVD.
