how many other members out there are fans of irish music? i literally cannot seem to tire of it. as much as i love it, you'd think i would be familiar with specific bands and performers, but i am actually not. i do love the irish tenors, the irish rovers, the chieftains, etc. but there are so many more out there i couldn't identify. it's kind of like classical music - the whole i know what i like thing. i can listen to irish fiddle music endlessly, and i have for the last couple of days.
one of my all time favorite songs - whiskey on a sunday - this version by danny doyle.
over the years i have managed to build up a collection of different compilation cds that i love. but the best is experiencing it live. i always try to find someplace on st. patrick's day that features traditional music, which isn't easy around here. usually a live band for a st. patrick's day party around here means listening to a kiss cover band.
any takers?

I'm with you, sweetie!
I still want to go to Boston for a St. Patty's Day show with the Dropkick Murphys.

^that's one of the best versions of danny boy out there, IMO!
here is a video of a group called celtic aire, that comes from bristol, tennessee, only a few minutes from where i live. i have seen them a couple of times and have one of their cds. they are incredibly talented kids - they started while they were in high school, brought together by a music teacher with a passion for celtic music. they aren't together anymore - and the ones you see in this video isn't the original full group. that kid playing guitar really blew me away - he was amazing.
EDIT: sia, i haven't listened to the dropkick murphys in ages! they're awesome. i also love enter the haggis - i have a couple of their cds as well.

^ Those are both great. I haven't listened to it in a while, but once upon a time I was a big fan of Celtic music and string band music in general. You inspired me to hunt around on Youtube and I found some fun stuff. There's a Celtic band from Serbia! I was trying to find some good old murder ballads and found them, the Orthodox Celts. Not bad. Anyway, here's a smattering of songs I found that I like.
My American friend who lives in Dublin says that this first one is the best kind of Irish music... spontaneous, oft drunken, pub singing...
It probably helps if you've already had a few. And now, direct from Serbia...
And for the big, big sound, these five guys have additional musicians on the sidelines.
I love a good gut-wrenching lament...
Too bad it got cut off. But- ahhhh. Now I think I'm ready for St. Patrick's Day.

those were awesome, spackle. they were all great in their own way - serbia - who knew? but my favorite was the first one. i agree with your friend in dublin. my parents have been to ireland two or three times, and i was the only one who wanted to watch the video they took while there more than once. they took some from inside one of the many pubs they visited, and it was very much like the video you posted.
and how can you not appreciate the dubliners? that guy's voice always just stops me in my tracks.
here is another band that is local to my area, i think, called sigean. we are fortunate enough in the very small town i live in to have a celtic festival every september, something i try to never miss. they have played there, but this is from the bristol rhythm and roots festival. i have one of their cds, too.

Nice. I love Irish flute, it's such a liquid sound, if that makes any sense. Long ago, I lived kind of in your general vicinity... closer to Appalshop in Whitesburg, KY than to your area. There's lots of great acoustic music in that area if you hunt it down. Or there was.

oh yes, there is a lot of good acoustic music around here, if you know where to look for it. and i agree with you on the irish flute - that makes total sense.
here is another video from the clancy brothers and tommy makem - one of the best beer drinking pub songs you'll ever find. i've listened to it at least three times this morning already.

i don't know who these guys are, but they are awesome. and it's the first band i've ever seen that included a guy eating a bowl of soup.

Do you like Celtic Woman? I think their voices are just beautiful and haunting. (The original ones that made up the group - some of the newer ones have good voices, but they're more like if you saw a good broadway singer, not that distinctive Irish haunting quality). And that Mairead Nesbitt can really play the fiddle. I saw them once (not all the originals) and they were good.
I also like Celtic Thunder - I love that song they do, "Heartland".
But I don't like when either group just starts singing pop songs like from Sting, or Mariah, etc. That's just boring.
Though, I do like Celtic Woman's rendition of "You Raise Me Up".
I also thought a lot of Riverdance was pretty stirring. (Lord of the Dance was another story).

With plenty of Irish blood and alcohol running through my veins, I guess I'm predisposed to like this music. Here's one of my favorites
Flogging Molly

i like both flogging molly and the pogues, though i haven't heard as much molly. i can't say i'm a big fan of the celtic women - i do agree they have beautiful voices and they're produces flawlessly. but i tend to go more for the traditional reels and pub songs. the few times i've caught the celtic women on pbs, i have seen some amazing fiddle players, though.
i was looking for a good version of my favorite song from enter the haggis, which is long way home, but they were all live and not as good as the album version. but here is the first song i ever heard them do, lanigan's ball -
i was blown away when i saw it (again, pbs). i've got a couple of their cds, but they have gone a lot softer in a lot of their songs since LB. but they are still awesome.
this is the kind of thing i can listen to all day -

I'm enjoying Enter the Haggis; I'd never heard of them before.
Here's another from Flogging Molly. I could ruin the thread with all the Flogging Molly I love, but this one's really good.
