I didn't see a parade, but I did once go to a reenactment a work-friend participated in. It was pretty cool, but nothing compared to some of the gigantic ones you posted at the Social Network. It was still pretty fun, though.

Got an event this weekend at the Lake County(IL)Forest Preserve in Wauconda. Will post pictures and recap. It's always a real good event.

Are there any photos and/or a recap coming, or do I have to go to a different blog for that? This stuff is totally awesome.
Are you allowed to use modern-day bug repellent?

Oh, and now I'm thinking of my favorite ep, 821-Time Chasers, with the, uh, Vermont unit, the Minutemen.
"Did you guys see the game last night? Oh, uh, LIBERTY!"

Well, since we don't bathe if we camp out, I don't think the bugs want anything to do with us.
The Wauconda reenactment was the last event I'm doing for the month, since Mom came home on Wednesday. (got to spend time at home for a bit). The weekend was hot but we had good crowds. President and Mrs. Lincoln were there, and there was a battle and medical demonstration both days. As a side note, if you go to an event, and they have a medical demonstration, if you are squeamish or don't like the sight of blood, don't go. Some of the doctors demonstrations are very realistic, and it's a point of pride if someone from the audience faints or pukes.( I did medical for a year).
Pictures will follow....I'm having some trouble with the downloading to Photobucket.

One of my friends took some battle shots. More to come...

Medical demonstrations? Like "this is how to do a field amputation"? "How to dig out a ball?" (that's what the round bullets are called, right?) That sounds right up my alley.
Both of my parents were volunteer EMTs and mom was a nurse, so I heard some pretty gross dinner conversations. For a while I worked as a dental chairside assistant. The worst thing I saw there was a youngish man getting a full mouth extraction in preparation for full dentures.
Oddly, I hate watching anything medical on tv or in the movies (I blame the tense incidental music).

Yes, that's pretty much what it is. We try to show the results of the battle, since many kids think that war is "cool". The doctors, or sawbones, as we call them, do amputations, I was the patient when I was "gut shot"(and got to die on the table). One of the docs even did a brain operation at one of the events one year, and several people got sick, fainted, or both. My friend wasn't able to get pics of the medical demonstration, but when I go again, I can try to get some.

Oh, please tell me how they faked a brain operation.... like a fake "skullcap" that had "exposed brain tissue"?
Is there a way to recreate the smell of the hot summer battlefields? Keep a couple of Rubbermaid totes of offal around and open them up periodically?

Just wear wool in 95 degree heat with high humidity and don't shower for the weekend. You'll find we're pretty accurate.
I think for the brain operation they did use a fake skull cap although when Doc did it, it really looked good. And he would narrate what he was doing, so that the public could follow along. I'll see if I can find some medical pictures from an envent.
