Yeah, Jackson's behind the camera for the Hobbit also. It was supposed to be Guillermo del Toro, but he dropped out because it was taking to long to make. He still has some influence though, he's credited for screenplay work and there are a few designs in the movie that obviously came from him (if the goblin king wasn't a Del Toro creation, I don't know what is).
I'm not a huge Javkson fan. I love the Frighteners, but the only other movies I've seen from him showcase some bizarre bigger is better attitude. I tried to like King Kong, but it's so bloody bombastic that it gets annoying. I have high hopes for the Tintin sequel when it gets made, since I loved the last one. Fingers crossed that he doesn't find a way to make it an obnoxious three and a half hour movie.

Yeah, but you like Banacek. There's an old Polish proverb that goes, "When a giant jungle gorilla comes to lower Manhattan, he's not there for the guided tour."

I'm going to be the 'bad guy,' and say that the way I felt about watching it (saw it on Christmas Day), must have been how some people felt when watching 'Episode 1' back in 1999.
Some said 'Ep 1' was a slog to get through, and that's what it felt like with 'The Hobbit.' I know it's a long journey, but I recall the book being so interesting in high school, I zipped through it quickly!
Here, the treatment reminded me of what Jackson did with 'King Kong.' That film felt like he was afraid this was his one and only shot at something, and so squeezed in as much as he could. In that sense, a lot of the emotion that I had during LOTR didn't translate over to 'The Hobbit.'
As well, the White Orc subplot just felt like their attempt to make Thoren the 'Aragorn' of 'The Hobbit.'
And in a funny way, it also helps make the Elves seem like wise yet un-caring.
*they all gather on a cliff overlooking the Dwarves' city, as they are chased out.
Elves: Oh...dead.
Dwarves: Ah! Allies! They'll help us!
Elves:.....................no.
*they all turn away*
Elf #345: "Sir, we marched5 days journey just to watch the Dwarves be chased from their homes?"
Lead Elf: Yes.
Elf #345: "Isn't that a little cruel?"
Lead Elf: Yes, but I like it anyways.

Sorry to be pokey.
Really looking forward to the barrel scene and Mirkwood. Too much Legolas. GIVE ME MORE OF MY DRAGON, JACKSON, YOU SELFISH KIWI!

More Legolas? God above. Let me state at first that I'm no fan of Peter Jackson's LOTR movies at all; one of the reasons was Legolas. He never seemed like anything other than Orlando Bloom in an embarrassing wig and his combat scenes ranged from slightly silly to thoroughly silly and unconvincing, especially when his computer-generated stunt double was bouncing around as though he weighed five ounces. And Jackson thinks we need more of him! I guess Bloom wanted the work.

I'm hoping they just dropped a lot of him in to lure in the stupid Americans, but it's likely it will be annoying.
I'm hoping the rest of the flick makes up for it.

I saw The Desolation of Smaug on ON Demand. Don't know why I'm bumping this just to say this, but...man, that WHOLE MOVIE was just filler.
And why are Legolas' eyes a bright blue in this when they were just Orlando Bloom eyes in those other three flicks?
If I can see the third one for free, I'll watch it, just to get closure, but, I'm not liking this so far. The LOTR movies weren't too bad, but I'd never watch them again. This is just...eh.

It's a shame that they made three movies out of the Hobbit, and that so much of the storytelling comes from the appendices in the LotR. The Hobbit is a prequel to the LotR but only after the fact, and it certainly did not affect the plot of the Hobbit at all -- in the movies there's all this presaging stuff that is irritating. The LotR story looms far too large over the Hobbit movies.
I actually liked the way PJ made the LotR movies despite the many changes and his tendency to go OTT. But since the success of the LotR he seems to be in a mad dash to outdo himself in action sequences and so we have ridiculous scenes like the giant golden dwarf. I wish he would just calm down and not have the dwarves chased by Orcs every single step of the way.
There's just so much frantic action all the time that when there is a climax, it doesn't feel like one, because everything feels like one. I mean, the Battle of Five Armies is going to be such a letdown -- what can it be but just one more action sequence?

....the HELL?
Okay, it's not a movie, but it's courtesy of Finnish TV.
All episodes are on Youtube. (And it's more LOTR than The Hobbit).
