The 2011 Major League Baseball season is coming your way in a matter of weeks, so I figured "Why wait to start talking about it"? Spring Training contests are due to begin in Florida and Arizona this weekend, tomorrow, to be precise. While we're on the subject, MLB Network has a day-night doubleheader coming your way Saturday. First at 1PM Eastern Time, the Yankees and Phillies meet in a Grapefruit League clash, and then at 11PM Eastern Time, they will show the Diamondbacks versus the Rockies (via tape-delay, I would imagine). In between, a couple of games from the College Urban Invitational at 4PM Eastern and in primetime at 8PM Eastern, all part of a Grand Slam Saturday on MLB Network. Anyway, check back throughout the year to see what I, as well as other baseball fans, have to say about the goings-on in the 2011 MLB season.

Unfortunately, we already have our first major casualty of the year. St. Louis Cardinals RHP Adam Wainwright will have to undergo Tommy John's Surgery and will be sidelined for all of the 2011 season. You hate to see that, especially so early.

I haven't checked any unusual playing destinations for this season as when the Mets played a team(forget which one-the Marlins?) in Puerto Rico last season or when the Yankee's began their season in Japan some years ago. Anything like that happening this season as far as anyone knows?

Not a Cubs fan. It's just unfortunate to see a player's season end before it even begins. It happens. The Twins finally get Joe Nathan back this season after he underwent Tommy John surgery two years ago. It happened in spring training, too, very much like Wainwright. As for my Twins, let's see. • Joe Mauer already had a shot this year to help "lubricate" his knee. Thank god we traded away our two best offensive catcher prospects. This was not what I wanted to hear. • Justin Morneau is still not 100 percent almost eight months after suffering a concussion last season. That's scary. You just can't take chances with these kinds of injuries, but man when you know a guy like that isn't completely there, it's depressing. • Nishioka, our new middle infielder, could be a great all-around player if he adjusts to the new league, teammates and culture. No pressure • Thank god we got Thome back for another year, especially with the question mark over Morneau. And that's just the start. I'll save it for later. It's too early for me to be talking about this now, anyway. March Madness hasn't even begun yet !

Not a Cubs fan. It's just unfortunate to see a player's season end before it even begins. It's never unfortunate when it happens to a St. Louis Cardinal. It's like watching an Oakland Raider or Detroit Red Wing blow out a knee. Always a good day. [/shadenfruede] Actually, I'm really excited for the Rockies this season. I wish they could have added one more starter, but maybe they can pick one up in July. The question is whether or not anyone can take down the Hall of Fame Phillies this year.

if everything goes perfectly, all the young guys develop and have great years, all of the pitchers have career seasons, and nobody gets hurt, with a little luck the Pirates could challenge for 4th place in the division and maybe 70-75 wins

The Pirates will be fortunate if they win 70-72 outings. Pittsburgh still has a long way to go before they will be a serious contender. Maybe by the time I'm 30, they'll get in the playoffs.

It will be very interesting to see who comes away as the division championship. It's a division to watch for SURE.

I'm personally not holding out much hope for my Yankees this year. Even if they had gotten Cliff Lee, there are still too many question marks in the starting rotation, and Joba Chamberlain is a mess who needs a change of scenery but he has no trade value at all. They should finish 3rd in the division behind Boston and Tampa Bay.
