While I haven't watched them yet, I hear people are bitter about Attack on Titan in general. Lol

^ We'll probably see the Godzilla anime film on Netflix before the end of the year.
There's a steady trickle of info from the set of Legendary Picture's Godzilla 2.
Pacific Rim 2 next February.
Shin Godzilla and Kong: Skull Island come to Blu-Ray in the US in a few weeks.
I'm now a Crunchyroll subscriber, so I get episodes of Ultraman (English subtitled) only an hour after they air in Japan.
... I think my vast hunger for kaiju-based entertainment is, for now, satiated. Still want a new Gamera production, though.

The trailer states that Monster Planet releases in Japan in November, while Netflix is claiming it will hit when it finishes its theatrical run. Maybe December at the earliest though early 2018 seems likely too.

Universal's Dark Universe is balls deep in doubt, but Legendary's MonsterVerse is thriving and full steam ahead on Godzilla: King of Monsters and Godzilla vs. Kong. For everyone who is on board (which should be everyone who reads this thread) don't forget to pick up your copy of the wildly entertaining Kong: Skull Island today on home video! I already got my 4K Ultra copy in the player as we speak. And it looks amazing.
Peter Jackson's King Kong remake also hits 4K today. I probably won't be able to pop it in until much later, but if you have the technology and the affection for the film it should prove to be an easy purchase. I was hoping Gareth Edwards' Godzilla would coincide with Skull Island for a 4K release, but alas. I guess they might be waiting for King of Monsters in 2019.
On a more Godzilla note, also a reminder that Shin Godzilla (Resurgence) hits blu-ray on August 1st. Set those preorders if you haven't!

I'm holding off on getting Skull Island for a week or two so I can pick up both it and Shin Godzilla on the same day!

And August is finally here. Godzilla completists should be adding Shin Godzilla to their collections right now. If not, GET OUT OF OUR THREAD!
The blu-ray looks pretty solid. The cinematography can be soft at times, but it's a stylistic choice and not a reflection of the quality of the transfer. I haven't made it far into the film yet (have to work tonight), but I will say affection for the film grows as it's viewed more often (which is the opposite of my experience with GMK, which just kinda annoys me now) as the political commentary seems to have well. The English dub offered seems about a par with Godzilla 2000, though a tad weaker in mixing the dialogue in.
Special feature included is a round table discussion of the film with a few G fans who work with Funimation as well as IDW's Godzilla artist Matt Frank. They discuss the film in general and a little bit about their favorite monsters and characters from the franchise.
Also on home video today, no matter how loosely Godzilla related, is Colossal, an indie-comedy about Anne Hathaway discovering she might be inadvertently controlling a giant beast who is destroying South Korea. I've been wanting to watch this one for a while!

^Got my Shin Godzilla Blu-Ray! I'll probably give it a spin in a few minutes. Funny you mentioned GMK, though: I loved it when it came out, then kinda soured on it because it felt a bit rushed and paled in comparison to Kaneko's other kaiju movies (the quite excellent Gamera trilogy), but I watched it again last year and really came around to it and loved it again and have watched it a few times since.
Of course, I think Toho would do good to give Kaneko another chance but with more time and creative freedom.
Oh, and Colossal was quite interesting. Hathaway is pretty great in it.

Upon closer inspection the English dub is pretty ass. I've been watching it via digital code during my lunch and the further it gets the more half-assed it sounds. While it sounds like they used more than three actors for it, which makes it a bit better than the international dubs Toho sticks us with (this still might be an international dub, but I heard Funimation was doing their own so I'm not so sure), it seems to translate the film too literally. They switch back and forth between "Godzilla" and "Gojira" willy nilly, while there's also a point where characters acknowledge a shift in speaking Japanese to English verbally even though in the dub they've been speaking English the entire time.
On one hand, dialogue scenes are so fast and heavy in this film that a dub actually helps more than subtitles do (and there's still a great bit of subtitling going on in this film even dubbed), but on the other following this English version gets a bit too loopy and the film works less as a result. Subs are the way to go here, though if you have trouble following the plot the dub might be worth watching once to get a foothold onto it.

^After growing up with Hong Kong dubs of the '90s and '00s I appreciate when a film receives a more professional dub! It's not the best, but certainly far from the worst.
I'd rank Monster Zero, King Kong Escapes, and Gamera 2 as some of my absolute favorite dubs. Probably watch them as if not more often as the subtitled versions.

Monster Zero and Frankenstein Conquers the World's dubs are worthwhile for adding Nick Adams' performance back into the movie. And Hogan has the hilarious scenes of dubbing over Godzilla and Anguirus, so I always love that one. I also think the editing somewhat improves Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster and Godzilla 2000, so I have a fondness for those dubs. "Oh Godzilla, what terrible language!"

It seems the Criterion is cooking up a collection of Godzilla movies, as a number have appeared on Starz streaming using new posters with the Criterion logo.
Interestingly one of them is Godzilla vs Megalon. Would this be the first MST movie to receive the Criterion treatment?

Interestingly one of them is Godzilla vs Megalon. Would this be the first MST movie to receive the Criterion treatment? Well this is certainly interesting news. I imagine it would likely be an Eclipse set, which means blu-ray is unlikely, but I'd be interested in snatching it up. As for movies on MST released by Criterion, none come to mind. Though on Rifftrax's slate Carnival of Souls got the boy-ray treatment last year, and Night of the Living Dead is supposedly up for one. They also did Armageddon (and they might have done laserdiscs of Casablanca and Jaws, though don't quote me on that). There might be more. Looking to Cinematic Titanic's line-up, one of the Eclipse sets has War of the Insects under the title of Genocide.

Watching these streaming versions now: these movies are in HD and look great! New and improved subtitles, too. For some reason War of the Gargantuas is only the international dub version (so no Russ Tamblyn dubbing himself) but it has maybe the best picture quality of them all.

It seems to go a little deeper now, because it looks as if Janus Films is now controlling theatrical bookings of the original film, which likely means Janus and Criterion have bought these films from Classic Media. That's not quite surprising, since the only activity CM has done with any of them lately is a repackaging of the original to tie in with the 2014 film, I think it's logical to assume CM is done with these films.
At first I assumed that they just acquired them in a package that also included the original so they could have the theatrical rights to that film and the rest they weren't really interested, but this list also contains Son of Godzilla, Destroy All Monsters, Godzilla vs. Megalon, and Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, which were all reverted back to Toho. This means Criterion went to Toho and directly asked for these films. Of course this may also be a part of a deal that Criterion made for original Japanese prints for the original film, but this is extremely juicy. And Criterion has had great dealings with Toho dating back to the likes of Seven Samurai and other Akira Kurosawa films, so they have a pre-existing relationship.
What we do know is that Janus now own all the Showa films with the exception of King Kong vs. Godzilla, Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster, Godzilla vs. Hedorah, and Godzilla vs. Gigan, which is absolutely amazing the more I think about it. Best case scenario (and unlikely but fun to think about) is that Criterion wants to put together a super expensive Showa Godzilla box set, and could potentially desire to crack deals with Universal and Kraken Releasing to include their films in the set. Mid-range case scenario is we might get some DVD only Eclipse sets with great transfers but lacking extras to recoup part of their investment. Worst case scenario is nothing at all, but I'm an optimist and this gets more exciting to me by the minute.
(Super-mega-optimist scenario has them cracking deals with Universal, Kraken, Sony, and Funimation for the ultimate Japanese Godzilla package that will cost thousands of dollars, but that's almost hilariously absurd)
