Oh hell, I just crapped myself! Three things. #1: Everything's better with Zhang Ziyi. Just sayin... #2: I have been mispronouncing the name "Ghidorah" all these decades. #3: Advanced tickets here I come! (please go on sale next week)

I have a Japanese version (bootleg) of this, but great to see it get a BD. The page wont allow me to cut and paste their names for some reason, but I'm glad to see those two gentlemen doing the commentary for this release, and not David Kalat (who I've never liked, either as Godzilla or silent film commentator)

It's a pretty good commentary, from what I remember. I'll have to give it another listen when this is released.

I'm glad to see Mill Creek doing another special edition kaiju release. Their initial Gamera discs had flaws, but were serviceable, but that Daimajin release they did a few years later was excellent. It's one of the best home video releases for kaiju movies ever in North America.

So I haven't been mispronouncing "Ghidorah" after all? Criterion is streaming 11 from the Shôwa era, but yeah it would be nice to see a complete series boxset. Criterion did it for Kurosawa and Bergman, Godzilla's just as big a name. I wouldn't know what 5 to introduce to newbies, I'd probably just say "These are my favorites, have at it." (Godzilla '54, GMK, Mothra vs. Godzilla, Destroyah, Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla… hell just watch all the Mecha movies. I luv 'em all!)

Ghidorah has several pronunciations. I wouldn't sweat it. It's not as bad and as confusing as the whole Anguirus/Angilas thing.
Criterion has been rumored to do a Showa boxset for a while now. Right now it's rumored that the hold-up was they're waiting for the rights to Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster, Godzilla vs. Hedorah, and Godzilla vs. Gigan to revert from Kraken, which is rumored to be happening very soon. They best they can hope for is a licensing deal with Universal for King Kong vs. Godzilla, which I imagine Universal would be game for (Criterion has licensed from them before).
The rumored release date is early next year, around the time Godzilla vs. Kong hits (which is in March). That's fine by me, since it's tax return season.

Collider (I know, ew, but hear me out) posted a pretty good screening Q&A with King of the Monsters director Michael Dougherty and star Ken Watanabe. There are some mild spoilers dropped (this was directly after the screening, after all), but as someone who has read the leaked synopsis of the film, what few heard here are very mild. Favorite moment: Watanabe admits he was more of a Gamera fan growing up. SCORE ONE FOR THE TURTLE! collider.com/godzilla-king-of-the-monsters-interview-michael-dougherty/amp/?__twitter_impression=true

Does Collider have a bad rep?
Welp, Facebook posted a link to buy advanced Godzilla tickets with no fees if you purchased direct from the theater, in my case, AMC (asshat Fandango of course wont waive their fee). But they (Facebook) might have jumped the gun, because AMC wont sell me the tickets. I tried again after midnight, but still no go. Maybe in the morn or by noon? I hope so, I had two plumb middle seats to the Imax (2D showing) in my sights.
Come on Facebook, don't tease me like that.

I'm not entirely unspoiled, but I have avoided most of the trailers and TV spots and avoided any in-depth spoiler discussion online. Trying to go into the movie fresh!
I've now passed the Roland Emmerich Godzilla from 1998. 11 movies to go!

Does Collider have a bad rep? I think more people have problems with certain content contributors than the site itself, John Campea being the primary one most people point at. Personally, I think the site is fine, especially when they put up Q&A's like this, which are usually their best content. I've now passed the Roland Emmerich Godzilla from 1998. 11 movies to go! I thought about doing a Godzilla-thon this year like I did for 2014, but I already had the Marvel-thon lined up and it would have doubled over that, and just didn't have the time. Plus that would require watching the Anime trilogy again. It's going to be a long time before I touch that again. I'll likely double feature G14 and Kong: Skull Island before King of the Monsters comes out. And I might Godzilla-thon for Godzilla vs. Kong next year.

^ The last time I watched all the Godzilla films in order was a decade ago. At that time the series was on hiatus and it seemed like the days of kaiju movies were long gone. Now there's five more Godzilla movies to watch with a sixth on the way!

Sing with me... "I'm so excited!"
Advanced tickets are on sale and I got my seats: 2 for IMAX 2D, dead center, perfect row on Saturday, June 1st. And it only cost me $10, because I found an old, very old AMC gift card that still had money on it. I forgot I even had it, glad they honored it.

So this year there isn't the Godzilla on blu-ray storm that there was last time, what with the potential Criterion set pending. But there was one disc that squeezed out before the release of King of the Monsters, and it's the first Godzilla movie to hit 4K here in the States. Which one is it?
Well...um...
It's not too much of a surprise. Whenever there is a new format, Godzilla 1998 is usually the first pic of the bunch to make it to the format. It was the first on DVD and the first on blu-ray. I was hoping we'd get a good disc of the 2014 film with a remastered picture, but I guess that's not going to happen, at least until King of the Monsters hits home media, that is.
Anyway, how does this movie that nobody likes look?
Let's state off the bat that this is never going to be a handsome movie. It features intentionally murky cinematography to cover up the limited CGI technology at their disposal that was coupled with their rushed post-production (though to be fair, more than a few of the CG money shots in this movie still hold up, even if all moments don't). That said, this is probably the best Godzilla 98 is going to ever look. Since the movie was shot on film, I believe it's a native 4K master, and the picture looks crisp with a fine grain. There are a few bright shots early on in tropical settings that look positively gorgeous.
The menu is pretty badass too. It features the promotional "eye" photo as a kind of cave painting, and if you flip through it you get a body shot of the title beast done in the same manner. It's very cool. The only bonuses on the 4K discs are the trailers for the film, while the normal blu-ray bonuses are on the accompanying blu-ray disc.
If you like the movie, are a Roland Emmerich fan (which are few and far between), or must have everything labeled Godzilla, it's a good way to spend twenty bucks.
