I've said it before and will say it again: if all this forum had to offer was MST related discussion, I would hardly post here. For me, this forum is a place for fans to engage and commiserate, no matter the subject. We post about a great many things and we all have the show in common.
Anyone who has a problem with that can bite my bag.

If you aren't content with RiffTrax or CT, then MST truly is dead, because that's the closest you're going to get to it.
If G4 wants to air reruns of MST, they can go ahead. But seeing how they aren't, nor are they in any negotiations for it, then there is very little point in bringing them up.

I just cross referenced wikipedia, and about 20 movies MST3K did were public domain...any channel could easily syndicate those...

Then write to any network you wish. Man on a mission. Power to you!

With G4, I was just using them as an example. I haven;t even seen all the episodes of MST3K yet, I'm in the process of doing that. I don't get why it has to be dead when there was such a strong fanbase supporting it. I figured it would endure and eventually be brought back, kind of like how Star Trek was...
I don't get why I have to be the only person to write a letter. From waht I understand, MST3K used to be all about writing letters, and tose letters actually influenced things...

I don't get why it has to be dead when there was such a strong fanbase supporting it. I figured it would endure and eventually be brought back, kind of like how Star Trek was... That's what RiffTrax and Cinematic Titanic are. The history of Star Trek is far different than that of MST3K. Star Trek was cancelled due to low ratings. However the ratings system switched to demographic afterward, and after study of it in retrospect, the show was quite popular in certain demographics. The show was put into syndication and drew high ratings. A series of films and spinoff series followed. MST was a low budget show with a loud cult following that lasted ten seasons and spawned a movie that bombed at the box office. Honestly, it's something that networks don't really want to touch, especially the complexities of putting it into syndication. I've never written a letter about MST. Frankly, after hearing the history of the show, I'm shocked the networks actually put up with us as long as they did. Especially the whining about rerun edits. I would have given a hearty middle finger to the fans if I were running things. Not that I'm not thankful for it. Otherwise, our tape trading catalogue might not be near as complete as it is today. If you feel that passionately about the show, go right ahead. A lot of us had the same desires when this board first started, myself included. But they all turned out to be "fight the power" daydreams and we moved on. We got CT and RT and, while not everyone can be pleased, we got our continuation of the series. That's what it is, and most of is are happy with it.

As a final word before I head to bed for the evening, I don't mean to come off as pessimistic. I've been on this forum a long time and I've written and read a lot of posts similar to this. It's not that we've stopped loving MST, it's that a lot of us have witnessed what had happened to fanhood over the years.
The simple fact is that the ideology of "bring the show back" has existed since the beginning of this board, before we had really any word as to what the old gang might move on to. Then came the Legend Films deal which gave birth to RiffTrax, and not long afterward Cinematic Titanic spawned. Now that was an exciting time to be a MSTie. Because that was the fruits of our labor. The boys (and Mary Jo, of course) were back doing what both they and we loved. MST was back.
If you're not fond of these projects, I'm sorry. But they are the result of the cult fanbase that MST created, and the start a campaign for it to give something else when it already spawned its new generation is moot. It's already happened.

Yeah I remember those old days after cancellation, the end of the sci-fi board. Everything went quiet. We had a few board interviews with some of the cast. Mike seemed to be the most visible and active. He had his books, did Rhino intros - and when he did his Legend commentary track- it might not have been MST level riffing- but the forum was all a buzz about it. I'm grateful for all the post MST projects. I think they were good for the board too.

Not to beat a dead horse since every good answer has already been given. But between this board, the CT board, and the Rifftrax chat threads, that pretty much covers all the MST talk you want. There *is* a lot of MST discussion still going on, but it's spread out among different venues. This board is getting close to ten years old, too. Most of the CT/RT fans are fans of MST, and it just doesn't generate new fans as much as larger cultural icons like Godzilla might.
I consider the level of activity reasonable given all the other considerations.

Indeed. In fact, our MST chat is more active than our RT and CT boards. That's a tad weird, but I imagine the rifftrax.com boards had all the track flocking in their direction, and CT averages 3 movies a year, so their board being inactive isn't a surprise.
But, we are resiliant. Our activity peaked when those projects first started, but I suppose we evolved since then.

We've explored options of getting the show back in syndication from time to time. Most of the threads in general chat are about the episodes most (myself included) have seen, and we've sort of discussed them in circles. While the Bond movies have an innumerable list of cool/funny/amazing/sexy/etc. things going on in them, most MST movies are explotation (The Horrors of Spider Island)/sh*tty scifi (Oh... let's use The Brain that Wouldn't Die)/sh*tty fantasy (The Undead)/etc. Really, bad movies have a lot less to talk about in them than good movies. Even bad movies with funny comments, the best you can do is talk about the dumb stuff in the bad movies and the comments. As others have said, the show's been off the air for quite some time. The last time I saw it on any channel whatsoever was when they were playing the movie on IFC, and that was about three or four years ago.
The boxed sets are nice, and they're fun to watch with friends, but it's really an acquired taste. There may only be one or two generations of fans out there (those of us who watched the show, and the kids of those of us who watched the show). So, yeah, we are a dying breed. Just like the people who were major fans of nearly every T.V. show ever.
To be honest, I haven't actively followed RT or CT. As much fun as those fellows are, it wouldn't be the same for me. Plus, I barely have the capital to buy the boxed sets, so that also helps. RiffTrax and Cinnematic Titanic are things I would support and not pirate, and they've done dozens upon dozens of movies so far. It tends to add up. I'm just now starting to catch up on the boxed sets.
You're welcome to hang out, HipsterThor, but we don't have insane traffic. Contribute to the discussion, and I'm sure we'll all respond in kind, for better or worse, in our own ways.
I hang out in Sloane all the time because I usually don't have much of substance to say. So, it's funnier to post d*ck and fart jokes here.
That reminds me, It'd better get silly in here quick, or I'll mo--... Oh right, I've never been a mod.
Carry on, then.

Wow. A post from DQ that didn't make reference to feces. I never thought I'd see the day.

Like I said, I rarely leave Sloane because I don't really have anything to say about the show that hasn't been said a hundred times over. I'm actually relatively articulate compared to most of my Sloane rantings.
But, if it makes you more comfortable, I can go back to making poop jokes.

A film lagacy is different than a cult television show that did modestly in ratings, especially one that isn't even in reruns anymore. It's difficult for the series to generate new fans, and the projects that do (Cinematic Titanic and RiffTrax) have their own boards. This board started when MST was still airing in reruns, which meant new people were catching it. We increased in popularity when we asked Satilite News to link us on their site, which they kindly did. That was many years ago. There's not many new members we can squeeze out of much of anything anymore. As for the members we do have, we aren't going to hold a gun to their head and say "post damnit!" If they have something to say, they will. So...what? Is MST3K destined to die off and fade form the public conscience forever? YOU BET!
