Looking forward to the new ones from:
Paul Thomas Anderson Quentin Tarantino Terrence Malick
Also, that new longer cut of Leone's "Once Upon A Time In America" when that gets released.
Old films I'm seeing at the BFI next month with Mrs. Shep:
Suspicion (Hitch) Marnie (Hitch) Husbands (Cassavetes) Targets (Bogdonavich)
Supposedly they're doing a Polanski thing soon. Looking forward to seeing "Chinatown" and "The Fearless Vampire Killers" on the big screen.

Just saw "Les Mis" at the theater (eh *shrug*). But I saw a trailer for "The Lone Ranger" starring Johnny Depp as Tonto. Picture Jack Sparrow speaking haltingly with some face paint on. But it looked kinda funny.

Just saw "The Hobbit" and there was a very long trailer for the upcoming new "Star Trek" flick "Into Darkness", coming in May. Looks pretty good.
Also: "Jack, the Giant Slayer" !

Two of my favorite directors.
Soderbergh...
and del Toro...
Looks fun in a -I'm going to show Michael Bay how you do giant robots right- kind of way. Though I do hope he someday goes back to things like Pan's and Backbone.

I'm into this idea of "Escape from Planet Earth" (coming to a theater near you February 14), not because it looks like anything more than yet another animated CGI cliche movie, but because I like the undercurrent of misanthropy bubbling under the premise. You know, that humans are a crap species who've made their planet a crap planet, and any aliens who have the misfortune to find themselves here will want to do nothing so much as leave. That's pretty edgy stuff for a "Toy Story" wannabe movie.

^I haven't seen the preview but that sounds like an interesting take.
The Great Gatsby in May 10th
It's Baz Luhrmann so it should look gorgeous, as well as be audacious and larger than life. Now, If he can reign in his propensity for broad (and terribly unfunny) comedy, it could be worthwhile. Different at the least.

my first thought is that that's the movie equivalent of covering "Stairway to Heaven," but we'll see. Great Gatsby is such a mammoth novel, it would be really hard to do it justice.
It would be really fun if they threw in some really sly references that made us think of the housing bubble/the bailouts etc. There's a lot about Gatsby and the idea of conspicuous consumption that definitely resonates today.

I loved her first 2 films, but was pretty blah over her last 2. So I'm not sure what to expect from Sofia Coppola -- but the film, based on a true story, has promise and a nice roster of young actors (and Sofia's pretty good at bringing out the best in her performers)

I really hope people turn out for Pacific Rim. It's one of the few original properties in a sea of familiar franchises or sequels.

A trailer came out a week or two ago for Alfonso Cuaron's upcoming sci-fi film Gravity. Looks intense.

So, anyone else looking forward to Pacific Rim this weekend? I'm hearing nothing but great things about it so far, though like uruseiranma said, I do hope it does good in the box office too.
