I'm pretty much a Mario buff, and I'm kind of in one of my Mario grooves, so I thought it's about time for a Mario thread.
Talk anything Mario here. What game did you just buy? What's your favorite Mario game? Who's hotter, Peach or Daisy? And so on and so forth.
I spent today looking up some Mario games on Amazon that I never had a chance to purchase over the years. As far as platformers go, I Super Mario 64, Luigi's Mansion, and Super Mario Galaxy 2 have all eluded me so far.
I'm also interesting in purchasing the original Super Mario RPG and Paper Mario, but they're pretty pricey for old games. I'm looking into Mario Sports Mix, even though I hear it's not very good. But it has basketball and Hockey on it, and I'd love to play a Mario-ized version of both. All they need is Mario Football now.
I'm thinking of getting a few more Mario Parties. I only own the second one, and pretty much know it inside out by now. I've played the first and the third, and I didn't enjoy the controls on either as much as 2. Are any of the others improvements?

I prefer the 2D side scrollers in general...but the 3D "scavenger hunt" ones that started with Mario 64 will always be fun for me as well.
However, when it comes to 2D platforming...I'm at heart a Sonic fan, all the way. ;-)

As much fun as I had with the original side-scrollers, and 1-3 are all equally awesome in my book, Mario Galaxy is just so far and away a unique experience that it has to top any list.

I'm a mega-purist, i loved Donkey Kong as a kid and in my opinion, it's all gone downhill since then.

Galaxy was definitely the best of the 3D platformers. I haven't played Galaxy 2, but I hear it's even better. But I want to beat Galaxy 1 before I get into it.

Here's a spoiler for the end of Galaxy:
You beat Bowser and save the Princess. The End.

Dr. Mario. Yes I'm serious. EXPLAIN YOURSELF! I've never even played that one. I know some people that swear by the Yoshi stuff, though.

Ah, I totally forgot the puzzle games. We haven't had one in so long. I remember Dr. Mario, and it was fun. Yoshi was less so, but just as addictive.
Mario's Picross on the other hand...ugh.

I think I may be the only person alive who likes Mario 2 the most. Something about it being so different (yeah, I know it was originally an 'Arabian Nights'-flavored game called Doki Doki Panic that got re-skinned for the American audience), and having such unique enemies, as well as a cool way to defeat them (one of the few games that involves yanking someone off a bird they're riding and tossing him at other guys attacking you). Wart has the distinction of being the Mario baddie with the oddest way to defeat him.
I'm going to second Super Mario Land as being a favorite as well. Hard to play now, but my Gameboy Color has slightly better resolution than my regular Gameboy, so I try to play it on that, when I can remember to buy batteries for it.
I'm surprised nobody's mentioned any of the first couple of Wario Land games. Granted, the more recent ones aren't my cup of tea, but the first few for the Gameboy were amazing.

Mario 2 USA isn't so bad once you get used to it. But as crazy as I was over the first Mario game when it came out, I don't think it could have delivered for me with gameplay so different. But I've played it from start to finish several times and it's a pretty fun game when you set aside how strange it was at the time.
I even had to warm up to the 3D platformers though. While I enjoyed Mario 64, I never really obsessed over it like many did. And Mario Sunshine I never even finished. Haven't played it in years, either.
