Greetings folks. Well, I have to admit it's pretty intimidating seeing how surprisingly active this forum remains in 2012.
I have never really inserted myself into the MST3k community. It's just not my normal M.O. to do things like that with passions of mine barring extreme circumstances (for instance I didn't really become particularly active on the forum of a webgame I play until I basically became one of the developers).
I also never really sought to connect in person with the folks from the show because I never minded keeping them up on a distant pedestal.
But this past April I finally attended 2 Cinematic Titanic shows, and during the second one had a strange but cool experience. My wife and I were just sitting in our seats before the show and she was grading tests from her 3rd grade class she teaches. This guy in front of us kept kind of turning and staring at us, also clearly doing a bit of eavesdropping.
Finally, he stood up and said, "I hate to be rude but are you grading school papers?" My wife confirmed and he just kind of nodded and there might have been another brief exchange but then he just kind of said a quick goodbye and went away. It was strange but we shrugged it off.
A few minutes later he came back and gave us a CT DVD and explained he was Mary Jo's husband and just thought it was exceptionally cool that my wife was sitting there grading papers while we waited for the show to start. He told us we had better clap for all of Mary Jo's jokes and then invited us to the meet and greet.
After the show I did indeed finally meet the MSTers associated with CT and it was great, if brief. And then proceeded to have a very long convo with Mary Jo's husband just about...everything. Life in general, our MSTiedom, etc. It was surreal but fun.
During the exchange I mentioned a project I had started in 2001 after the show went off the air, but had abandoned about a quarter of the way through due to other obligations.
His talking with us and that entire night re-sparked my fire for MST3k which had certainly never gone out, but had burned down to just embers amidst a hearth full of all sorts of other joys and pains of life-- my own business, a 2 yo daughter, a wife of 15 years, other hobbies...whatev.
So I dug out my old MST3k journal and I've thrown up a website for it this past week. I've got about 50 episodes reviewed already and will begin reviewing the others.
There's clearly plenty of similar projects out there. I'm not sure if mine is unique enough to pique anyone's interest, but that's okay. I really am treating it as a personal journal. That's why, for instance, there are questions I might ask about a joke or aspect of the show that have probably been answered over the past decade that I will keep there for posterity sake because I did not know them at the time I wrote the entry (which I write as I'm watching the show and directly after). I might include UPDATES for such bits if anyone cares to comment on things (like those damn Bonanza lyrics), but we'll see.
Anyways, here you go. www.mst3kjournal.com
I just put up a quick 7 entries to start out and will just update bit by bit. As I said I've got about a quarter of the episodes under my belt that just need to be put on the site (and 20 of those I've reviewed are just the KTMAs so I've barely scratched the surface of the best stuff).
Let me know what you think. Comments welcome.
