Anyway, 2 Broke Girls might be our cup of tea, but it's a 10 million + viewer show. That's a good gig for a director, regardless of how poor the writing may be. Yeah I'm with you, which just highlights how important the food-on-the-table aspect of your point is. I don't think I've ever want to have to choose between living comfortably and making pop garbage or starve but make something that I'd consider artistically important. And Mr. A, thanks for the Levy callout. Ugh. Real Steel, Night at the Museum 1 AND 2, that awful Pink Panther remake. Makes Fred look angelic by comparison.

I always forget Levy was in Zombie Nightmare. You don't have to worry about me defending him. He's like a lesser version of Brett Ratner and McG, and I don't even know how that's possible.

I understand why many people hate Michael Bay, but the Rock, the Island, Bad Boys and Armageddon are miles above what those three guys have done.

I dunno. I liked the original Rush Hour, and although I might be alone in this, I thought Terminator: Salvation was surprisingly well-crafted, even though the acting sucked crap.
I did like The Rock, however.

We can't have this conversation about Tim and Fred and not also mention Shawn Levy. The pasta-throwing creep from Zombie Nightmare might be the one with the most successful post-MSTing career. You're going to have to qualify that a little bit better. I can think of a guy with a small role in a John Agar film who might have a better claim. Or another out of control kid who was in a Tommy Kirk film could also argue that assertion. Hell, comparing their profiles, Shawn Levy might not even have the most successful career post-MSTing from Zombie Nightmare itself. Tia Carrere may not have done much of any distinction recently, but when she was hot for her brief time, she was definitely hot.

Yeah I'm with you, which just highlights how important the food-on-the-table aspect of your point is. I don't think I've ever want to have to choose between living comfortably and making pop garbage or starve but make something that I'd consider artistically important. There's a flip side to this statement. There are those who work on these shows, work their butts off even, and genuinely believe in what they're doing. In an artistic sense? Of course not. But they enjoy the work and they enjoy the product, and they are happy with the fact that so many do enjoy it. I hate the living hell out of Two and a Half Men, but those who watch it enjoy it, and those who work on it enjoy it as well (save for maybe Charlie Sheen, but I never cared enough to look too deep into that mess), so I find no use in complaining about it. Even Shaun Levy enjoys his work. He'd be the first to admit he's no Kurosawa, but he's just trying to entertain, like a guy in a Goofy costume at Disneyland. He enjoyed Real Steel, and so did millions of others. Is it right he got rich off of it? Moral has nothing to do with supply and demand. He made a product, and people bought it. He had no control in how many and how much they paid for it. But he's happy with the movie he made, and happy that the majority of the public embraced it. When that doesn't happen...well, the name Alan Smithee gets tossed around... In choosing between the two, I find the choice to be a no brainer. I find merit in both art and entertainment, and if I had an offer between either one, I'd give them both my all. Many who work on bubblegum entertainment are the same way.

There's a flip side to this statement. There are those who work on these shows, work their butts off even, and genuinely believe in what they're doing. . .they are happy with the fact that so many do enjoy it. I hate the living hell out of Two and a Half Men, but those who watch it enjoy it, and those who work on it enjoy it as well. . . Many who work on bubblegum entertainment are the same way. They earn my disdain. I think less of people who consume crapfests and think they're hilarious. I cringe when my wife watches tripe like Dancing with the Stars or Grey's Anatomy. Those shows are wildly popular, but they are designed to elicit a particular emotional response (DWTS has all those side stories and cues the violin music whenever there's the tiniest injury). I find someone trying to manipulate me into feeling a certain way insulting. Many don't. Many enjoy it. They find it a catharsis. They can watch someone get hit in the nuts every day for 20 years on America's Funniest Home Videos (which Trace Beaulieu, whom I respect IMMENSELY worked on) and laugh each time. If the measuring stick is popularity, then Fred Savage gets props. He has directed some very popular stuff. If it's whether something is good or bad--and THAT is subject to our own opinions and tastes--then I have to say in my opinion it is garbage and earns my disdain. I wouldn't expect any of this work to stand the test of time as "good" work would. Most of this prime time garbage will be forgotten by next summer. So people can feel "good" about what they're doing right now, but I imagine the vast majority of the people starring in this garbage that will get canceled by next spring will get chewed up and spat out of the system while Savage glibly goes about cashing his paychecks.

I think I'm going to start a thread defending Seltzer/Friedman, just to see Mitchell go on an Incredible Hulk style rampage.

LOL! I'll be honest with you, I have no idea why this topic has stirred such misplaced passion with me. I guess television has just really been annoying me for some time and this is all venting. I do love you Pliss for plotting my demise, however

Ha, I think we've all been there. Last night I realized I'd accidentally bought light yogurt, again. I wanted to exact vengeance on anyone who ever thought aspartame was a good idea.
