Interesting to note the absence of the Friendly-Looking Backup Singer on the record version. This must have been recorded when it was just the Fish-Lipped Guy and the Eskimo, and before the drinking, the drugs, the womanizing, the gambling, the tax fraud...

i thought i actually heard her in there (she does a nice little counterpoint, not just harmonizing but doing, i think, a melodic inversion (she goes up as he goes down). but it's much lower in the mix.

yes, yes, i listen again and the backup vox are out in the first chorus but come in after that. (maybe she got to the studio late.)
i'm well on my way to writing and defending my musicology dissertation, "The Fish-Lipped Way to the Promised Land: Polyvocality as Countercultural Metaphor In Frank Larrabee's 'California Lady.'" They like to humor me here at the hospital.
