No one's talking about this? I thought you geeks would be all over it.
For the record, I'm hopeful.

Clone Wars is ok, a little overrated but far better than the live-action prequels.
I think Disney will probably make a passable Star Wars movie, probably also better than the prequels, but I'm not very excited and I bet I don't even bother to see it. As far as I'm concerned, every last penny of value in the Star Wars franchise was exploited away years and years ago. I no longer care.

Disney always makes me nervous when it comes to this kind of thing. I have issues with their brand and generally avoid their products.
But I will admit, this does sound interesting. If nothing else, at least it will get it out of the hands of George Lucas, who wouldn't get out of the damn director's chair for the last three flicks. Disney will have a hard time screwing it up any worse than Lucas did.

Eh. I don't really know if I'm excited or not. Lucas isn't doing them...and I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. As we look toward JJ Abrams' turn on Star Trek, different hands might be what an aging franchise needs. But when fans with raging hard-ons get a hold of their favorite properties...Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem ensues.
So far Disney's deal with Marvel and Pixar has brought us good things, so I don't mind that they'll be behind it. I have a fondness for Donald and Goofy, myself.

I'm frankly not getting my hopes up; Disney's track record with sequels has not been great, and most fans have learned not too get too excited about Star Wars news. It could be good, but I'm cautious.

Mark Hamill discusses the news.To get it out of the way since this is the part you are all wondering, he doesn't know if he'll be a part of it yet. What he does say is that Lucas told him and Carrie Fisher about it months ago. Whether or not that means he's setting them up to return as Luke and Leia is up to interpretation.

What he does say is that Lucas told him and Carrie Fisher about it months ago. Whether or not that means he's setting them up to return as Luke and Leia is up to interpretation. Have you seen either of them lately? Don't get me wrong, I respect the hell out of what both of them have done with their careers and their lives. But they aren't exactly good-for-the-big-screen at this point. Hell, Hammill wasn't looking so good for Jedi. My opinion: if they're going to reboot (or whatever the appropriate term is), just start fresh: don't make it be about Luke/Han/Leia's kids. Just skip down the history a bit and have a new story line. We can keep the Jedi, the ships, the stormtroopers/whatever, the planets, the backstory...but just make it new. Bad acting to the side, part of what made the new ones so bad was that they were shoe-horning a story into something that just wasn't working. Anakin's story could have been compelling, but it just wasn't. So let someone else give it a shot with freedom to make it fresh.

Well, Alec Guiness wasn't "I am supreme Jedi Master Studmuffin" when he made the original, now was he?
But I'm not saying they should come back. I personally don't care if they do. They could recast for all I care if Luke and friends come back. But if there's no R2-D2, I'll be pissed the f*** off.

When I think about the many things about George Lucas that I hate, one of the things I hate the most about him is the way he makes himself, in some ways, so difficult to hate.

Sounds interesting, i am a SW and Disney fan as i think this makes sense for Disney to buy Lucasfilm since they did some Disneyland/Disneyworld attractions and merchandise yet this could work. Disney done good for Pixar and Marvel, so why not Lucasfilm and SW?
JJ seems like a logical choice since he's more of a SW fan than a ST fan and i think this could be a passion project for him for his love of the old trilogy.

Title should have been: "Don't F*** With a Jedi Master, Son."
I will say the directors they've been getting for these new movies keep me interested in seeing how they turn out though. JJ Abrams seems to be toning down the lens flares for a more traditional Star Wars style. Rian Johnson at the helm of Episode VIII is even more exciting. Hell, I thought the spin off films sounded like a horrible idea until they announced Gareth Edwards for the first one, forcing me to snap to attention. Jury's still out on Josh Trank depending on how Fantastic Four turns out, but Chronicle was a fun and well made movie.
These new movies are slowly grabbing my attention. But the fact that I can take or leave the franchise as a whole prevents me from being too excited.

I liked the trailer, personally. And I agree, a fresh set of directors coming in does have me excited. I respect Lucas, but his work on the prequel trilogy was, well, it's all been said by many a fan over the years. As a longtime casual fan, I have faith that Abrams can't make it any more clunky and awkward than Lucas did on the last three.
Stephen Colbert did a piece on the trailer the other night, arguing against the fans who were upset with the lightsabre design. It's funny, as Colbert usually is, but what caught my eye was that he quotes a tweet from none other than Bill Corbett himself. Here's a small part of the bit, though the full-length one is worth watching. Corbett's Twitter feed is hilarious, by the way, if you're not familiar with it.
And of course, someone already figured out how the trailer would look if given the Lucas Special Edition treatment. I appreciate minds like this.
