got my dad this for his birthday. it's the perfect gift for him. I'm sure my dad would love that, too. But I don't talk politics with him anymore. It doesn't end well.

my dad and i have reached a point where we don't really discuss them, either. we just send joke forwards to each other, insulting each other's politics. but i knew when i saw this, i had to get it for him.

in the simpsons marathon thread in frank's tv, i had suggested people posting their top 5 eps. as i started putting my list together, i found i could not do just five. so i settled for 10. i probably could have gone as far as 20, but i will show some restraint. some. since there's more than five and i wanted to include pictures, as i am wont to do, i decided to post it in my blog so i won't clutter up the other thread. i'm basing this on seasons 1-10, though i know there are some episodes i quite liked past season 10, though they just weren't the same. i'm not including any halloween episodes - as far as they go, my favorite would have to be from either season 5 (the devil and homer simpson, terror at 5 1/1 feet and bart simpson's dracula) or season 6 (the shinning, time & punishment and nightmare cafeteria). 10. 22 short films about springfield - season 7 this was such a fun episode, imo. gave lots of opportunities to use other springfield characters in quick, funny skits. the parody of pulp fiction was great for me, with the quarter pounder vs. krusty burger debate between wiggum, lou and eddie, and how milhouse saved wiggum and snake from herman after using herman's bathroom (you gotta say yes!!). also loved the bit about the gum in lisa's hair. 9. selma's choice - season 4 i realized when compiling my list that more than one episode include patty and selma (i almost put principal charming from season 2 on, because i loved the romance between skinner and patty). usually a little of patty and selma go a long way with me. but i really like this one, when selma goes looking for love so she can have a child. maybe the funniest part (imo) is homer's love for a hoagie he had been eating for several days - weeks? after a company picnic, that gives him food poisoning. in his place, selma takes the kids to duff gardens (oh, how i wish that place really existed) to get a taste of being a parent. another really funny part happens while they are on a water ride and bart dares lisa to drink the water, which makes her go on an lsd-esque trip. but what put it on my list is at the end, when you see a rare moment between selma and homer, who normally hate each other. homer takes selma's hands as she sadly talks about how much she wants a child. it's only a couple of seconds of sweetness that gives the show heart (something they lost, imo), but not in a cheesy way, since selma ends up adopting jub-jub, her late aunt's iguana. 8. bart carney - season 9 this was around the time i felt the show was changing and not for the better, but there were still episodes that i found pretty funny, such as this one, when bart and homer start working at a carnival to help out a carney they got in trouble (voiced by the late jim varney), and his son. i love it when the moment they agree to become carnies, how back at the house, marge suddenly shudders for apparently no reason. the cooders trick the family into leaving so they can squat in their house - i love how lisa says "they're squatting in our house!" i liked seeing the family living in bart's treehouse and how they work together to con the cooders into getting their house back.7. el viaje misterioso de nuestro jomer (the mysterious voyage of homer) - season 8 this episode really stands out and gave a new, fun twist to one of the tired "marge is mad at homer" stories. they really splurged on some cool animation for the time during the scenes when homer was tripping off the insanity peppers, and it had johnnny cash as a spirit wolf! how could you NOT like that one? 6. summer of 4 ft. 2" - season 7 i love a good lisa story. there have been some not so great ones, but like lisa's substitute in season 2, this one showed us how much lisa stands out from her other family members, and suffers for it. in a funny way. i like how it took place at the beach and definitely had a vacationy feel to it. i think the line that cracked me up the most is when marge is taking the items out of the bag from homer's trip to the store (where he bought a bunch of random stuff to blend in with his purchase of illegal fireworks - condoms, old harper, panty shields, two enemas etc. as a nod to american graffiti) and says, "i don't know what you have planned for tonight, homer, but count me out." it had a sweet ending when bart was actually nice to lisa. other favorite line came from milhouse: "up yers, krabapple!"5. the springfield files - season 8 this one cracks me up so much. it makes me miss the x-files. the glowing apparition of mr. burns saying "i bring you love" sweetly is just too funny. nimoy's short contribution was funny and i loved it every time mulder flashed his fbi badge with the picture of him in a speedo. the ending with the town singing "good morning starshine" was bizarre, but i found it funny, probably because i was still smoking weed back then. 4. a fish called selma - season 7 i really loved this one. i still miss phil hartman's presence on the simpsons and i don't even watch it anymore. troy mcclure and lionel hutz (not to mention the countless other parts he lent his voice to) weren't big parts of the show, but they were always funny. and i loved that troy mcclure got a whole episode. (once i had hi, i'm troy mcclure - you might remember me from such self-help films as smoke yourself thin, and get confident, stupid! on my answering machine) very funny episode and jeff goldblum was great as mcclure's agent, mccarther parker. favorite line from troy: "selma, jub-jub is fantastic! he's everywhere you wanna be!" 3. black widower - season 3 another selma-gets-married episode, this time to sideshow bob. sideshow bob was fun for a while, but he got stale after brother from another series from season 8, imo. i loved kelsey grammer as bob and i thought he peaked in this episode. watching bob force himself to appear in love with selma was hilarious, especially after their consummation, when bob rushes to the bathroom to scrub himself frantically with soap and water. it had a kind of corny mystery element to it, but it was still very funny to me. 2. homer at the bat - season 3 it's funny that a show centered around the sport i detest most would be almost my favorite simpsons episode of all time, but that is just how funny i think this one was. it had a bunch of baseball stars appear in it - can't remember who, don't even care - but it was hilarious how one by one they were befallen by accidents and illnesses to prevent them from playing in the big game for the nuclear power plant. favorite moment: when mr. burns is at bat and the force of the pitch sends him flying backwards. that and his "signal" to homer. and i love the song they play at the end - it was great.1. three men and a comic book - season 2 this episode beat the cosby show in ratings for the first time in 1991. bart, milhouse and martin go in together to buy the first edition of their favorite comic, radioactive man, since none of them can afford it on their own, but their suspicion (mainly bart's) and greed keep them from sharing it, and they ultimately lose it. my favorite part, i think, was when bart did chores for mrs. glick to earn money for the comic - it was all just too funny and too true if you ever tried that as a kid. this was the first episode comic book guy appeared in. i just never get tired of this one. honorable mentions: the way we was - season 2 - i love any simpsons flashback/future show.
brush with greatness - season 2 - marge paints mr. burns' portrait - guest voice, ringo starr.
simpson and delilah - season 2 - homer grows his hair back, thanks to hair in a drum and insurance fraud. itchy and scratchyland - season 6 - thinking about this one makes me want to change my list to my top 11. last exit to springfield - season 4 - i almost put this on my list, but since 22 short films about springfield was already on there, i was afraid mr. atari would think i was a suck up. grampa vs. sexual inadequacy - season 6 - i had kind of gotten out of the simpsons for a while, but season 6 was when i went back and i remember loving this episode. a great abe and homer story. bart on the road - season 7 - road trip to tennessee's wigsphere! favorite line: after nelson throws a rock at the sunsphere and it collapses on the boys' illegally rented car, they all walk off - and bart says, "remember everyone, we're parked under the sunsphere." a milhouse divided - season 7 - milhouse's parents split up. can i borrow a feeling? still kills me. homer's reaction to it was hilarious and speaks for all of us. the city of new york vs. homer simpson - season 9 - classic. and mother simpson - season 8 - i've never been a huge fan of glen close until she provided the voice for homer simpson's hippie mother. and it had maybe the sweetest ending in simpson history.

Nice list. I was making my top ten and I only have six episodes so far and none are on your list, which is good because I forgot about a few of these episodes. Even though I was never a fan of The X-Files The Simpson's parody of the show was hilarious. That one will be my seventh episode.
Would you mind if I left my partial list here?
The other six are:
Duffless: Lisa's Clockwork Orange experiment on Bart to see if he's smarter than a hamster is one of my favorite subplots. The main story of Marge getting Homer to stop drinking ends up being one of the sweetest story lines in the series. When Homer takes that bike ride with Marge at the end it's just pure bliss.
Bart's Comet: Death by comet! I just love that every character gets a funny moment in this episode. And since I'm partial to astronomy; the later season 14 episode Scuse Me Will I Miss the Sky is a sentimental favorite of mine but not top 10 material; it was a no miss with me.
Marge vs. the Monorail: Why Springfield would need a monorail is beyond me, but that's what makes this episode funny. The towns never ending attempt to be like a big city never failed more wonderfully.
King-Size Homer: Homer finds a way to work from home: become excessively obese. What's funny is he ends up being a better and somewhat smarter worker than when he was actually on the job.
Krusty Gets Kancelled: I think the title says it all.
Last Exit to Springfield: Homer becomes the head of the workers union to save the worker's dental plan. What could possibly go wrong?
I seem to have a love of season 4. My entire top 10 list could be made just from this season.

Nice list... some of my favorites (Non Treehouse of Horror and Non Sideshow Bob):
1. BEHIND THE LAUGHTER - the "Behind the Music" Parody episode. Genius. Favorite line: "The Dream was over... coming up next, was the dream really over? Yes... yes it was...or was it?"
2. YOU ONLY MOVE TWICE - Featuring Albert Brooks as Hank Scorpio, the evil leader of Globex Corporation. Favorite line: "Homer, I understand... if you could do me a favor and kill someone on the way out, I'd really appreciate it."
3. SLEEPING WITH THE ENEMY - Nelson Muntz is my favorite Simpsons character. Him singing "Papa can you hear me" is absolutely beautiful. Favorite line: "Savor it... let the flavors dance on your pallet."
4. HOMER'S ENEMY - Frank "Grimey" Grimes hates Homer... and dies. Favorite line: "I'm peeing on the seat. Give me a raise!"
5. BART AFTER DARK - Bart works at a brothel. Favorite line: "We just heard this place existed!" The boys sing in "We put the Spring in Springfield."
Just five I really really like... too many others deserve comment as well.

those are great lists, guys - particularly homer's enemy and about all of chicken's list. if you didn't see the article mr. a posted in the simpson's thread in frank's tv, i suggest you read it. it basically says that the simpson's jumped the shark in homer's enemy and after reading it, i agree. it was a great ep, but it really began the downfall.
and also - don't feel you have to post your lists here, though they are welcome. mine was just so long with so many pics - i thought it would be better here.
