Like it? Hate it? I've been sucked in. I don't understand how or why but it's too late. Any opinions?

I've really been trying to figure out what about Minecraft makes it so fun. The music makes me feel so damn lonely. The quality of the graphics is poor. So why am I up half the night swinging my pickaxe?

It's complex, and it's a lot more freeing than your standard sandbox game. It is nearly the purest expression of "sandbox".

Back a few years ago I was heavy into the MMORPG Runescape. Seemed like everyone else was into World of Warcraft (I don't really like popular stuff anyways). I mostly focused on the mining part of Runescape. So, I've alreay been conditioned to spending hours doing the same thing over and over. What do you focus on most when playing?

I like it because I can choose weather or not to go kill things. Sounds weird, but I get so bored of the combat stuff sometimes.
I really like the hunting for stuff and building, though I am not one of those people that can build massive works of art. But it's still fun!

My son just got into it. So is it really just a lot of building, or is there an actual "game"?

No, no, it's not just building (or crafting, if you prefer.) That's half the game. The other half is mining. There's also something about zombies. And other monster things that either get angry when you look at them or don't look at them, I'm not sure. I'd probably have to play the game to understand that part better.

Well, the game is you (alone in the world). You have to start with nothing but the knowledge to make objects. So, you make objects that help you make other objects. During the day there isn't much in the way of monsters but at night they come out/spawn and it becomes much more dangerous. So you want to build a shelter or house to keep you safe and build a bed to sleep. There is alot to keep you busy but there is no real point to the game nor is there any way to beat it.

Well, there are two boss mobs now in Minecraft, but they don't really -end- the game if you beat them.
It's mostly building, and you can turn the monsters off if you want, but half the fun is plunging into a dark cave, not knowing what lies in wait. You can breed animals, grow crops, and even build dimensional portals. The world holds many surprises, and even a few NPC villages.
I tend to dig a pit when I first start, make a pseudo-pyramid over the pit out of glass blocks, and then begin to dig slowly down, building off-shoots of the main pyramid room (usually separated by metal doors... crap gets dangerous), and harvest most of my crops underground, with torchlight.

Sounds cool! I always build a small cobblestone house right away and put the glass windows, door, bed, and other stuff in. Then once I'm "safe" I go out mining. When I've dug quite a way, I'll build an underground house and put in a crafting table, furnace, and chest. Then I just go around doing that all over. The map/seed I'm on now I have like 5 houses. I managed to find a dungeon as well which is pretty neat. Only one diamond though.
