So my tax return came back yesterday and the first thing I did was pick up the Wii U, because I needs me some Mario goodness.
Interesting system. Basically they just made a console version of the DS. I stopped handhelds at Advance, so I can't say exactly how this compares, but personally I find the second screen a bit obnoxious. They get inventive with it a bit in Nintendo Land, but I'm crap at multitasking.
Games I got for it were Nintendo Land and New Super Mario Bros. U. Popped in Nintendo Land first to get a feel for the controls, which is disturbingly large (it's bigger than the Nintendo handhelds, even the original Game Boy). It's a cute game, though not obsessively so. Wii Sports for the Wii was far more addictive as far as launch games go (though all pale in comparison to Super Mario World for the SNES). Funnest game I've played for Nintendo Land so far was Donkey Kong's Crash Course, where you have to tilt your controller to make your little wheelie guy move through an old school DK style course and try not to land on your head. I want to play the Mario and Luigi games, but I need a second controller so someone can join in.
As for the U's first Mario game, I've breezed through two worlds so far and it's pretty fun. I think it has a similar problem to the Lost Levels (the original Mario 2) in that it plays a bit too similar to the previous one with very little new (the last one was a nostalgia roadtrip, this new one is just more). But then again, when something new happens, sometimes Super Mario Sunshine can result, so meh. There are a few new power-ups. Mario has a flying squirrel costume which is pretty nifty. The bosses are harder, so brace yourself. It's another solid game in the Mario lineup, even if it isn't distinct among it.
But the ultimate test of a Nintendo console for me always depends on two things: their main attraction Mario game and their Mario Kart, and the U won't debut either until much later, so I'll be patient. I played the GameCube the least out of the consoles because I wasn't all that taken by Sunshine or Mario Kart Double Dash, but played the hell out of Wii because Mario Galaxy and Mario Kart Wii were just so damned enjoyable. I'll keep my eyes out.
