All right, Nick's new album was just out this week in the US, and I know there are a couple other fans here. Thoughts? Opinions?
I admit that it takes me much longer to warm up to Nick's more recent output, it being far less angry than his older stuff, since most of his trademark filthy rage seems to have found an outlet in his side band Grinderman. That said, sometimes after many listens his slower records turn out to be some of my favorites (see "The Boatman's Call"). But I still always approach his new stuff with a little trepidation.
Gotta say, though, apart from the silly song titles ("We Know Who U R," "We Real Cool," "Higgs Boson Blues"), this is an almost ridiculously beautiful piece of work. Most of the songs have a similar, lullaby-like looping quality to them, but the overall soundscape is very soothing, and makes the album hang together very well. The passion is subdued, but definitely seething below the surface. The lyrics are typical Nick, dirty and hilarious but also rather profound. The first time I listened to the album straight through I found myself just sitting there with my jaw hanging open at the sheer majesty of it; it's quite magical. Your mileage may vary, but I can see myself playing the hell out of this one in a way I haven't with a lot of his other newer output (see "Nocturama," which I think I only played all the way through about four times).
Anyone else?
