"Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy."--Benjamin Frankin
I think that just about sums it up. I love beer, which you probably already know. There are many different kinds of beers:
1) Domestic beers---these are the big brands. That's Budwiser, Miller, Busch, Coors, Michelob, Pabst Blue Ribbon, Old Style, Sam Adams, those kinds of things.
2) Imports--Beers from other countries. Also big brands. These are your Lebatts, Guinness, Heineken, Stella Artois, Beck's, Warsteiner, to name a few.
3)Microbews. These are the most interesting. Most microbrews start out as local products, the really good ones go national. Examples of microbrews that are now available nationally are Fat Tire, Dead Guy Ale, and Moose Drool. Some restaurants even offer their own microbrews, that they make at the restaurant.
I am always looking for new beers and I have found a couple that I would highly recommend.
My first recommendation is
Golden Monkey. This bad boy will knock you on your butt. It's 9.5% alcohol, and it can sneak up on you. In short, it's great!!!
Dead Guy Ale. As an ale, it's a bit darker and heavier. It's 6.5% alcohol and is very good. It is served at John Barleycorn restaurant, here in the Chicago suburbs, and you can buy it at Jewel and Binny's.
As I make more discoveries, I will post them here.

Great idea for a blog, crowfan. I'll be checking in with interest. I'm a beer lover myself, but I don't drink much non-domestic stuff except on the rare occasion. I do have an interest in beers that I remember but can no longer find. Stuff like Meister Brau, which I've never had but think they still make. In college I remember putting down stuff like Schlitz Ice and the occasional Miller "red label." It seems the worse the beer, the better the stories. But I also like some microbrews. Don't know if it qualifies as a microbrew but an Atlantic northeast company, Shipyard, makes a seasonal Pumpkin Ale that I thought I'd never like but, damn, that was some tasty stuff. Tall glass, ice cold. Keep up the good research

The seasonal beers are good too. Sam Adams has tons of them and the fall pumpkin ales and lagers are coming out now too.

i expected a beer in a beer blog. at least some peanuts or something, yeesh.
i guess sam adams is my favorite domestic. normally i would say i've never tried one i didn't like. i'm particularly fond of their winter ale and octoberfest. but i tried one earlier this summer - i can't think of the name of it now, but it was the first one i didn't like. had too much of a bitter aftertaste. something about a hops tour? i've killed too many brain cells, i suppose.
in my 20's i drank copious amounts of rolling rock and killians. i can't drink those anymore, yuck. i'm partial to ales. fat tire is pretty good, although i always think it's called flat tire.
i used to feel somewhat ashamed that i don't like guiness. blah. when i was a waitress i hated it when someone would order one when it was super busy. it felt like it took half an hour for the bartender to get it settled in the glass. it was like beer you had to cut with a knife and fork.

It seems the worse the beer, the better the stories. gypsygurl and i used to get mickey's malt liquor all the time in our 20's. it came in these short, fat bottles. whew. those were no joke.

I drink two sips of Guinness and I'm full. It's a good beer, but it's VERY heavy. And if I knew how to post pictures, I'd post a beer for you, Spice.

If you drink too much of that beer, you might drink the ketchup by mistake.

Is that a liverwurst pickled for too long? I had a cream soda last night. Does that count?

Nice blog, Crowfan. It'll be fun to read yours, and others, thoughts on beer. I may not jump in all that often being I'd probably make a fool of myself (see above phantom dis, much well deserved by me) but I'll always read it because you knuckle heads are very funny.

Raging Bitch beer. Yes, this is a real beer. It's a Belgian style India Pale Ale, or IPA for short. At 8.3% alcohol, it packs a kick. I suppose drinking too much of it can make your girl turn into one. Comes out of Frederick, MD. It's not bad. The first taste is a bit bitter, at least to me, but after that, you don't really notice it. And the bottle quotes Hunter S. Thompson---"Good people drink good beer". Arrogant Bastard Ale. Phantom mentioned this is another blog, and I thought I'd mention it here. Bastard is made by the Stone Brewing Co. The bottle tells you that "You're Not Worthy". It's 7.2% alcohol but it's very good and has an intense taste. As an ale, it's a bit heavy, but again it's quite good. www.arrogantbastard.com

I think the Heineken Brewing Co is crying a little tear today. Have they lost you forever?
