Interesting and not widely known stuff in it. Like BBI's corporate structure, who owned what percent of BBI, early budgets (cheap!) and the origins of MST3K: The Movie (which was being discussed even BEFORE Season 3 premiered). Very good read. SEE IT HERE

Great quote from Joel: “It wouldn’t be right to look much better than our movies.”
That is one of many things I love about MST3K. The sets, props, and 'special effects' were about as on-par (sometimes WORSE) than the actual films. It was hilarious, yet appropriate.

Very awesome. Thanks for this.
My favorite quote is Joel talking about his partnership with Jim: “It’s a rare partnership. We work well together because we have a little bit of both sides in us,” Hodgson says.”I wasn’t just the creative guy, I was the guy who pitched it to the Comedy Channel. But Jim isn’t just a business guy who doesn’t understand the creative process, either.”
Bwahahahaha!

Here's something from Mallon, I find interesting, because they never actually did do this.
“If you talk to me a year from now, I hope we have another show in production,” he says. “We want to give people like Trace Beaulieu a chance to do their own projects. Now we’ve got the experience and the track record to make it happen.”
That is something I always wondered. Why didn't Best Brains Inc. attempt to produce another show, other than MST3K? Granted I *assume* the reason is because they didn't want to take a lot of attention away from MST3K, and the studio was pretty small, but you'd think Mallon would have thought at some point, "I wonder if there's a team of writers who'd like to create a show, and this company can back them up." Maybe it was a financial thing. It even struck me as odd that Jim didn't try to produce another show after MST3K folded in 1999.

It's certainly an interesting contrast to look at BBI over the years. The BBI that existed in 1991 is far from the BBI that existed in 1999.
It's interesting that Jim explicitly mentioned Trace when referring to "other projects". That would be on of the few specific things Trace or anyone else has ever given as to why he left: lack of projects outside of MST.
And it makes sense as to why no other projects got off the ground, but only to a certain point. It took them 5 years from this article to get the movie into theaters. Which turned out to be a bigger hassle and take much longer than anyone anticipated. (I personally think they should've just partnered with HBO on the movie) After the movie was done and in theaters, and probably before mst3k was done on Comedy Central (but it was evident it was coming to an end), I can easily see Trace wanting them to walk away from it and work on something else, or at least, de-emphasize MST. And Jim it seems really didn't want to do that. So Trace left.

Also, take a look at the attached reprinted article I found on one of the old newsgroups from October '92, exactly 18 months later, from roughly in the middle of shooting Season 4. LOOK HEREThey had already turned down Paramount for the movie (and I assume, also HBO), Joel wanted to go independent with the movie and he already was planning on stepping down as host (but stay on behind the camera).

Clearly they're referring to Donald Pleasance.

Really interesting. Especially this part:
"Hodgson and Mellon each own 45 percent of Best Brains; Trace Beaulieu and Kevin Murphy split the remaining 10 percent."
It doesn't seem like Trace and Kevin still own any part of the company, I wonder if Mallon bought them out when they left?

Kevin said in a Reddit AMA that he still gets a small residual, so it would seem he still has that 5%. The question is if Trace has any left (he's never said anything about it), and if Joel sold any of his when he left BBI.

Joel still gets residuals from DVD sells.
