So in my "Master Ninja 3" thread, a lot of the comments have been about how unpopular the "Space Travelers" episode is, and I thought this was a topic deserving of its own thread. So why is "Space Travelers" so hated? I've still never seen it, so I'm doubly curious.

In my opinion, it's just very boring and slow. There are a couple of good riffs here and there. But for the most part, it just goes on and on and it gets to the point where it feels like the off button on the TV remote is going to save your life. There's not any chuckles to be had within the movie. You start to wonder, "Why am I wasting my time watching this?" If you've ever seen the Robot vs. the Aztec Mummy, it's like that episode all over again. Unless you are trying to watch every MST3K episode, don't watch this.

As one of the very few defenders of Space Travelers around here, I must comment It's personally one of my favorites, and I think that appeal comes from the notable cast. Other than that, I guess it comes down to the fact it was one of my earlier episodes, and one with which I turned on some new fans to the show. Eh, who knows. There's probably just something wrong with me. OK, back to the hate

I first saw Space Travelers -- aka Marooned -- right after it came out, as a 12 year-old burgeoning space geek, and thought it was pretty damn' cool.
I saw it again in college in my early 20s and was, frankly, pretty embarassed that I liked it that much as a pre-teen, owing to the tedious pacing and the glaring technical inaccuracies.
I saw it again in my mid 30s on MST3K, and thought that episode was kind of weak, largely because the movie was so slow and tedious and an overall "downer" that it kind of dragged Joel'n'the Bots down with it. It's one of those episodes I saw once or twice, thought "m'eh", and let it just kind of slide by.

When I visited the Kennedy Space Center two years ago, (wearing a bots t-shirt no less!) the Marooned riffs did float up from the depths of my mind more than once.
The fact they have a pseudo Disney/Epcot type show in the visitor's center, with a smart-alecky robot extolling the virtues of rovers and other umannned vehicles, probably helped with the MST flashbacks. You even walk through a simulated Mars habitat with Hexfield Viewscreen like windows.

I tend not to like the "legitimate" movies with all-star casts and decent budgets as much as the low budget/indie stuff. The Greg Peck impressions are the high points in this otherwise tedious film.

I don't hate it or love it. It's not the first one I'll pull out, but Hackman is good in anything.

Nope. Nope. Nope. I love it. I could listen to Trace do his Gregory Peck impression for days. The Tony Franciosa/James Franciscus gag was funny every time. Gene Hackman freaking out and melting down was hilarious. A great episode to kick off the best season of the show.
I'm sorry. The man who is tired of Space Travelers is tired of life.

Well, I like "Aztec Mummy", so I probably wouldn't mind this one. I should have thought of a better comparison. The episode Space Travelers most similar to is Stranded in Space.

He seemed to be channeling Peck as Dr. Forrester during the KTMA days.

Actually, I thought The Robot Vs The Aztec Mummy wasn't that bad, though not nearly as good as The Black Scorpion.

I like it all right, but yeah, the movie is tedious. J&tB had to rely on the all-star cast for their material -- Peck, Hackman, Janssen, the Finder of Lost Loves.

I think the problem I and others had with that episode was as somebody said a ways up the thread: Marooned (Space Travelers) was a major movie from a major studio with a serious budget and major talent who were at or near the top of their careers, and which was not badly reviewed at the time... and MST3K's forte was slagging third-rate flicks often from obscure studios on shoestring budgets cast with has-beens and never-wases (with a sprinkling of up-and-comers) with crappy writing and plots thin enough to read a newspaper through -- y'know, like Fire Maidens Of Outer Space.

This may be my least favorite episode although I have only watched it one time so things can improve. But, wow, from what I remember this is the slowest movie ever. At least the scenery changes in Red Zone Cuba and Castle of Fu Manchu. At least, the first half of Slime People is not covered in fog. At least you can actively hate the peepers in Attack of the the Eye Creatures. At least you can make dinner during the sandstorm of Hercules Against the Moon People. At least you can take a nap during rock climbing in Lost Continent. But you just have one and a half hours of Space Travelers.
