Right now I'm renting a room in a house. My landlord is the male half of a sweet old Italian couple. This is temporary situation, until February or March when I pick out a nice apartment, move into it, and get the rest of my stuff out of Public Storage. I've my own bathroom and the use of the house kitchen; there's another tenant occupying the whole of the third floor / attic.
I pause my MST3K episode of Gamera vs. Gaos, go down to the kitchen to fix myself a meatball sandwich, and I'm in there rooting around, hearing my landlord chuckle at his TV every now and then. He doesn't usually laugh out loud at whatever he's watching. After a few moments he speaks up:
"Hey Lancaster, I don't know if you've ever seen this show, but - they put on a bad movie and they sit down and, um, basically they make fun of it - "
Yeah. He's watching the theatrical MST3K episode, This Island Earth, on HBO. What are the odds. What are the freaking odds. I giggle with delight and give him some quick context ('90s, eleven seasons, a legendary show, one of my favorites, was literally just watching it upstairs). He tells me he's never seen anything like it, and we sit through a few moments of Mike and the Bots ridiculing Exeter. This kind old Italian gent, who moved over here in '73, can cook a mean pot of pasta e fagioli, and rents out spare areas of his house just because, has just discovered Mystery Science Theater 3000 and is absolutely tickled by it.
I didn't know what else to say except that I'd lend him my DVDs if he ever wanted. I'm still grinning about it. He was wondering if it was on Netflix and I didn't know.
The best part is that he thought enough of the show to reach out and tell me about it in case I didn't already know. I mean, die-hard fans like us are often trying to get people into it, but it's rare to witness someone's organic discovery of it! And I had no idea HBO was showing the theatrical episode.
So yeah - that made my night. Thought you all would appreciate this little story!
