At least you got to go somewhere a lot of people don't go! Except the Chinese. But they don't count. Sorry, should have thought of that.

Yeah, a few people pointed out that I was able to see something more like "real" China that's different from the places that do more for the sake of tourism. On the other hand, though, it's hard to pinpoint a "real" China since the country's so huge and has so many different sub-cultures in it. A bit like trying to pinpoint the "real" United States from a visit to Homewood, Illinois. It's real enough for the residents of Homewood, but someone in Indiana or Hawaii or Rhode Island or Louisiana might see things differently.

Drink lots of bean juice and eat lots of crickets and report back so I know if I want to do that or not if I ever get to go! Also, please report back on what is not street food or stereotypes. You're so lucky to get an inside look. My grandmother was born in China but we no longer have a family connection and I've never gotten to go. If I could, I'd want to see an art museum and gauge how much is old vs. new and in support vs. at odds with official state perspectives, though I'm not in a position to read it very well. Hope you have an awesome trip!

Sadly, my trip ended many posts ago... but it was an awesome trip, to be sure!
I tried neither bean juice nor chicken, though I did try a number of odd beverages and fell in love with a restaurant called Hot Pot.
