before there was jimmy mcgill there was lionel hutz, attorney at law -
rico
we now have two episodes left of this amazing first season of BCS. i'm guessing it will have something to do with the big ass lawsuit the mcgill brothers are hatching on sandpiper, after jimmy is smart enough to realize his client is getting ripped off by the retirement facility. he isn't saul yet - he can't be low enough to steal from her either. no, his intentions are still good. but he's the perfect example of the saying you can't bullsh*t a bullsh*tter. who would recognize a scam faster than a con artist?
that open was the most revealing yet. we get more background on jimmy and kim's relationship - she inspired him to quietly get his degree from - what was it - american samoa law school? go land crabs! he cheerfully works in the mailroom at HHM while working for his degree without help from his brother, still a brilliant lawyer. he does it all by himself and passes the bar on the third try.
and the two most important people to him had slightly different reactions. i was a bit disappointed in chuck's reaction. he was stunned and seemed happy for jimmy, but how sad was it that jimmy had to ask if he was proud of him? and even chuck doesn't fully believe in jimmy's abilities as a lawyer - that was very clear when he stumbled over his answer to hiring jimmy at the firm.
and oh man, i am hating howard more and more. what a dick. he comes in jimmy's meager congratulations party his coworkers throw him, tells him he's not good enough to get hired on as an attorney - and takes a piece of cake on his way out! he literally takes the cake. i, for one, was glad i didn't hear howard's patronizing speech on why jimmy wouldn't be getting hired. it was the first of many punches to the gut jimmy will have to take - where his transformation from jimmy to saul really began.
it's howard's mistake. jimmy truly is the hardest working lawyer around. who else will climb in a disgusting dumpster for their clients? that scene was so rough i found myself breathing through my mouth, as if i could smell how bad it really was. then the smarmy lawyer for the facility calling (you're whispering - i'm at the opera, jimmy says, while covered in adult diapers)
i think we saw jimmy's greatest kick in the series in that scene -
i loved how this case lured chuck back into the fold, helping jimmy piece together the shredded documents and realizing he was really on to something.
jimmy is taking on quite a bit - going after the big dogs and bringing chuck back to work, all while trying to finally prove himself as a lawyer to the world - all while honestly trying to protect his elderly clients. the scene of jimmy and chuck facing those jerk lawyers representing the facility was soooo good. when they play their big card that turns it around - the syringe invoice that reveals the racketeering and fraud going on, i wanted to applaud for the mcgill's, especially jimmy. it was ballsy, but that's who he is. chuck might have the book smart intelligence, but jimmy has balls for both of them.
and another great ending. chuck believed so much in his disease that even he couldn't see that maybe it wasn't what he thought it was. when he realizes he forgot to be sick after mindlessly going outside to retrieve some files - wow. he didn't even see it when getting the keys out of the mailbox. that realization was mind blowing for both of them.
and like seeing how jimmy begins his journey from jimmy to saul, we see how mike takes that first step in a vet's office that will eventually lead him to working for gus fring. through a shady vet! all for his granddaughter and daughter-in-law. another good guy forced to break bad. i don't know what is coming in the next two weeks, but i am both looking forward to it and dreading it. i have a feeling kim using chuck's code to print everything jimmy asks for will have something to do with it. once howard realizes what's going on, it ain't gonna be pretty.
^favorite line, btw.
