Jim Mallon appeared at a UW event called "Our Funny University" in September. He talked about his strange UW years and some about MST3K. Not a heck of a lot there, though he talks a little trivia about the origin of Gypsy's voice, KTMA budget, etc.
Best quote was when he was asked about the best KTMA episodes: "There weren't any best ones." Here's the link to the video from Wisconsin Public TV. Scott Dikkers, Founding Editor of The Onion, is also a guest at the event.

Mallon, who says he is now a practicing psychotherapist, is introduced at the 24 minute mark.

I always liked Jim. He get's too much crap for no real reason. He's probably the main reason MST3K even exists. I read that his daughter passed away and that's why he became a therapist. A fun watch to be sured.

Oh, wow. I hadn't heard that. That's sad. :-(
But, yeah, I think the Internet, being what it is, took some of the choices he made and sort of twisted the facts about to make them seem worse. I admit I don't know all the details, but that's the general sense I've gotten.

Honestly, my only real complaint about Mallon is that he's the real reason Joel pretty much left Mst3k to begin with. Unless that whole "Joel and Jim arguing about a movie for the show" was just a rumor.

I remember when someone on Cinematic Titanic's message board(not here but CT's actual one) claimed to be Jim Mallon and said disparaging stuff about that and Rifftrax. It clearly wasn't him but I would imagine stuff like that didn't help with his image since people thought it actually was him.

I'd probably say the only thing that truly bothered me about Jim Mallon, (according to Mike), by Season 10, Jim rarely if ever came to the studio to do any work. Not help write, not help with props, not help with costuming, like he did during the Comedy Central days. And yet, at the end of the day he was still the "executive producer" of the show getting the biggest cut of the money.
That, and I think he's *partially* responsible for MST3K: The Movie turning out the way it did (yeah, Gramercy did most of the meddling, but Jim Mallon had the option to just make the film independently, and then find a distributer, something Joel suggested..... and he didn't do it)
That's horrible to hear that his daughter died though, regardless of what opinions you have of him.

Sorry to hear that his daughter died. I've heard the complaints about him, but I'm not sure if they are fair, since he doesn't seem to tell his side of the story much.

Honestly, my only real complaint about Mallon is that he's the real reason Joel pretty much left Mst3k to begin with. Unless that whole "Joel and Jim arguing about a movie for the show" was just a rumor. Jim's decision to direct the eventual film version of the show was the catalyst for Joel's decision to leave the series. However, the fragility of Joel's “creative ecology” on projects gives me the impression that he probably would have left the show for some other reason later on even if he'd decided to stick around at that particular point in history. You can find out about that in more detail here: www.mst3kinfo.com/satnews/brains/24q_jh.htmlIt was also briefly touched on in last year's Wired article.

Jim once said in an interview that he had considered making the film independently, but that when he worked out the budget he realized he would have had to fire people and he didn't want to do that. Rather thoughtful for someone who's usually written off as a jerk by many MSTies. Jim stopped doing Gypsy's voice and puppetry midway through season eight after they got picked up by SCI-FI. When asked why he was stepping down, he said he needed to focus more on his family. Based on what I've read, he's never gone into great detail about what these family issues were, but the fact that he didn't want to talk about them makes me suspect that they were the sort of problems you don't generally want to talk about in public, so that might have kept him busy for the better part of that era of the show's run. No idea if these family problems were related to his daughter's eventual passing. Plus if he felt partially responsible for Josh, Joel, and/or Trace leaving, he might have felt the show might function better if he was less involved with the rest of the crew.
