Good day to all,
My very first post. Exciting!
Just the other day, I was wondering how the Shout single disc re-releases fare in comparison to the original Rhino releases. Do they use the same video transfers and bitrates - or would anyone recommend an update?
(I already purchased the new Manos in addition to the Essentials disc I have to get the new bonus material.)
Much obliged in advance, Rocket

I only recommend purchasing them if you're one of those fans (myself included) who can't stand those annoying edited versions Rhino made with the commercial sign bumpers missing as well as the reel one cards. Otherwise, if you're looking for bonus material then don't count on it. They're bare bones.

I'll back what wattamack said for the most part. If you care about (and are even aware of) the missing bumpers on the Rhino DVDs, the Shout! re-issues might be of interest to you just for those. They appear to be new transfers (I'm far from an expert). Most of them look fine, not any better or worse than the old DVDS. There are at least two episodes (Beginning of the End & Red Zone Cuba) that have taken some damage over the years. I don't think there's anything too bad, save for a bit in the closing skit of "Beginning". I would consider checking out:
Gunslinger (good transfer, "slate" card and all bumpers intact) Beginning of the End (tape damage noticeable in some spots but all bumpers intact) The Atomic Brain (looks good overall, slate card, all bumpers and stinger intact) Red Zone Cuba (some slight tape damage, mostly at the beginning, all bumpers intact)
None of the Sci-Fi era episodes that I have (I never bought Touch of Satan) are any better or worse than the Rhino versions, while Batwoman is pretty much the same as the Rhino DVD. Both releases are missing the slate card and some of the bumpers. The Unearthly looks at least as good as the old DVD and the "Turn Down Your Lights" sign is back but otherwise there's no major differences. Only the old DVD has the host segment outtakes.

Thanks guys, I guess I'll stick with my Rhino discs then.
So the only disc in my collection that could be improved upon will remain The Killer Shrews. I managed to find a great deal for a mint Volume 7 set a while ago - but when it arrived it contained the original disc. Alas, the replacement ship sailed ages ago...

The Rhino version of Atomic Brain or Beginning of the End was missing the stinger, IIRC.

This is why I would ask the seller first to play the disc before ordering (and also going after a box set that is in good condition from a seller with 100% feedback). It may sound like a waste of cash, but it's worth it.

Wait, Shout! is selling things with the commercial bumpers on them? I've gotta get back into buying episodes again. (And I've gotta stop revealing how few episodes I actually own.)
