Sheesh! Memory like a sieve! Turns out we have a double feature this week for the Outsiders, because tonight we have..."RT Live: Night of the Living Dead". - Are they coming to get me, too?
Stay tuned...

Well, let's look at week 127.
I'd seen the Mads show earlier this year at the Colonial Theater, a great restored old-style theater in Phoenixville, PA. This show was at ArtsQuest at SteelStacks, a relatively new, upscale-looking arts center at the old site of Bethlehem Steel in PA. This time, the movie was a supposed thriller "Walk the Dark Street". It's the 53,297 rip-off of "Most Dangerous Game", it stars Chuck Connors, and it features guys walking the streets of L.A. carrying rifles and no one noticing. (Well, I suppose that could be accurate.) The movie was slow and the print was lousy, but the riffing was great. And Trace and Frank were very gracious, welcoming everyone on the way in and doing Q&A after the movie, including a classy compliment to Joe Don Baker, whom they called a fine actor...who still wants to kill them. I'll watch for when they're in the general area again; I'm hoping to see the show when they riff on "The Tingler". (One note: be advised the language used in the riffs earns this an R, I'd say. It's not for the little kids.) As for RT's live take on "Night of the Living Dead", this repeat had a new opening with the guys' genuine tribute to the late George A. Romero. The movie, now viewed as a horror classic, is certainly gripping, though I'm not big on ghoul movies. (Yes, they're ghouls, not zombies. There's a difference.) The riffing focuses on the besieged characters' respective carpentry obsession, catatonia, open hostility, and rank stupidity. (Yeah, unlock the gas pump by shooting at it.) They also riff on the short "Norman Gives a Speech", where Norman has to...give a speech. He does about as well as you'd expect.
As for "Time of the Apes", the riffing is great and the host segments are, too. Regarding the "movie", I guess I'll have to track down the original series to figure out just what the heck is going on. Well, at least Johnny ends up caring, I guess.
Three winners this time. Moving on to week 128, I'm going outside the rotation for the Outsiders this Halloween week with..."Podhouse 90: Dracula has Risen in the Polls"... - Written & directed by Frank, featuring Trace, Josh & Frank; and Christopher Lee doesn't appear. ...while the Originals selection is..."MST Hour Host Segments (Disc 1)". - With Mike as pseudo-Jack Perkins.
Keep those cards & letters coming in, folks.

Well, let's see how things went for week 128.
I listened to "Dracula has Risen in the Polls" on, of course, Halloween. It's a very sharp satire on podcasts, vampires, the nature of fame, New York, psychotherapy, the NYPD and leprechauns. (Trust me, it makes sense.) Basically, Drac hits the podcast circuit and things go downhill from there. It's very funny, and very opinionated, as could be expected from Frank. In addition to producing, directing and scriptwriting, he also co-wrote the songs. Trace does a great job as Dracula, featuring his very good Lugosi impression. In addition, J/J.E. makes an funny appearance near the end, while Frank has a good voice cameo. I thought it turned out well, and I'll have to check on the other "Podhouse 90" shows. (Be advised: it features R-rated language; it's not for kids.)
AS for the "MST Hour" intros, they're brief, but funny. The first disc I got featured the intros to Season 3 stories. Mike, as "Jack Perkins", is very funny in his intros, including going off on tangents regarding his extreme hatred of spiders (for "Earth vs. the Spider") and how his Viking heritage affects his golf game (for "Viking Women..."). Meanwhile, during the credit roll, he can be seen, among other things, giving out Christmas bonuses and having a stagehand stop him from stripping. The disc isn't a complete record (some shows only feature part 1), but it's OK.
Two good ones last week. So, on to week 129. The Outsiders selection is..."RT: Catwomen of the Moon" (w/ Bridget & Mary Jo)... - Does this feature Julie Newmar, Eartha Kitt or Lee Meriweather? ...while the Originals selection is..."Parts: The Clonus Horror" (Show 811). - Do the guys on Kamino know about this bunch?
We'll be right back...

Well, let's get caught up.
If "Catwomen of the Moon" seems familiar, there's a reason for that. It was later remade as "Missile to the Moon", which I'd seen before, both the riffed (by Mike, Kevin & Bill) and unriffed (not recommended). The original version is somewhat more bare bones, putting aside the expanded plot of the remake. Lasting just over an hour, it starts as the flight launches and barrels along until just as they head for home. There's the later standard alien female dominant/no males society, the usual attempted romances, the crewmember who's greedy, the hidden alien agenda...you get the picture. It's pretty ridiculous, but it moves fast and isn't pretentious. I was surprised to read it was originally released in 3-D; my RT download doesn't feature that. As for the riffing, Bridget & Mary Jo are great, as always. Not only are the jokes funny, but they're having a great time watching this stuff, laughing along as they riff on the office furniture in the spaceship and the cheap sets.
As for "Parts", this isn't too bad of a movie. It has an intriguing idea and tries to do a good job. However, a low budget and a lack of exposition make it fall short. I will say that it is better than the uncredited remake/rip-off "The Island". It makes an honest effort, and I might just track down the unriffed original with commentary. The riffing is funny, though they do run the "Biography" jokes into the ground. On the other hand, I'm surprised they didn't notice that protagonist clone Richard was played by Tim Donnelly, best-known as Chet on "Emergency!" I would've thought that'd inspire a few lines. The host segments with the omnipotent space brats was funny (particularly since I'm no fan of "And the Children Shall Lead" on TOS), especially the SOL kids shows. (Was that genuine Spanish? Can we have a translation?)
Two pretty good ones last time, I thought. So, moving to week 130. The Outsiders selection is..."RT: Yombao"... - I haven't seen this one, but it looks like an island-based story of spellcasting and racism...or something. I'm still not sure. ...and the Originals selection is..."Teenagers from Outer Space" (Show 404). - I've been sentenced to TORCHA! Oh, and I will be selecting extra shows for Turkey Day. Stay tuned...

So, how'd week 130 go?
This was the first time I'd seen "Yambao", and my first question was, "Where did they find this one?" A Spanish-Cuban co-production, it's set in Cuba in 1850. It's a very overheated story featuring benevolent slave masters, happy (for the most part) slaves, forbidden romance, witchcraft (both real and suspected), revenge, lust, lots and lots and lots of singing and ritualized dancing, and THE PLAGUE! It's made in an over-the-top manner than naturally lends itself to riffing, and the guys don't disappoint. It's a very funny effort that I really enjoyed. One note re: content: there's a very brief scene that, had this been done in the TFNWSRN days, would've had Joel opening the umbrella. And I'm pretty sure that at least one performer is in blackface, but I can't be certain.
As for "Teenagers from Outer Space", it's one of the funnier episodes. The movie is generally not painful, even if Derek is one of the blander leads on the show. Yes, the Gargon effects are pretty ludicrous, but I've seen worse. The riffing is great, and the episode features some of my favorite host segments (like the trash jettisoning and the skull ship). And the jumpsuit fashions inspired the only time I've dressed up for a convention. I wrote an article about it for the old DBNS board; I'll try and look for it.
Two good ones this time. So, it's on to week 131. For the Outsiders, I'm going outside the rotation. Since Thanksgiving Day is also the "Doctor Who" premiere anniversary, I'm going with..."RT: Daleks: Invasion Earth 2150 A.D."... - Featuring Peter Cushing as Doctor 1.5-ish. ...and for the Originals, the selection is..."The Sword & the Dragon" (Show 617). - Did Toho approve Ghidora's cameo?
I'll post my special Turkey Day selections later. We'll be right back...

Okay, for those playing at home, here are my Turkey Day selections. Be advised that I have to leave room for dinner at my brother's house, football, time with the family, travel time, Charlie Brown, WKRP and maybe a couple of other things. Anyway, I'm again limiting myself to three episodes, and they are...
"Robot Holocaust" (Show 110) - Yew and yor dawta aw dewmed. "Hercules Against the Moon Men" (Show 410) - DEEEEP Hurting! DEEEEP HURTING! "Space Children" (Show 906) - With Russell Johnson, Jackie Coogan and one of the brains from "Gamesters of Triskillion".
I'm also planning on watching the Turkey Day bumpers from 1993 and 1994. Yes, they weren't done by BBI, but one features fellow MSTies and the other has Adam West, so it's OK. I was going to watch the Turkey Day intros from last year's marathon, but I can't find them archived anywhere.
Oh, and before we go, after the start of the New Year, I'll be re-watching Season 11, with one exception. More on that later.
Drive carefully!

Oh, boy, am I late this time. Anyway, week 131 & Turkey Day...
"Daleks: Invasion Earth 2150 AD" is actually a pretty good movie. It does a good job of boiling down a six-part serial down to around 90 minutes, sticking to the basic story. Yes, it makes a lot of changes, but the visual effects are better and Peter Cushing is great as the alternate Doctor. The riffing is good, with Bill (the primary Whovian) commenting on the non-canonicity, and all three of the guys expressing their dislike of the Daleks. (Let's face it; they've been overused of late.) Very funny stuff.
"The Sword and the Dragon", the third of the Russo-Finnish fantasies, is actually a well-made movie. It has some great production values and imagination. Yes, it's quite goofy, but I really didn't mind. I do still wonder how they got away with not-Ghidora without getting sued by Toho. The riffing is great and I liked the host segs, particularly "Supercalifragulisticexpialawacky!" (Did I spell that right?) And you have to admire their commitment to style in the Ingmar Bergman joke.
Turning to Turkey Day, "Robot Holocaust" was a really, really lousy movie. Poorly acted, poorly scripted, poorly produced. Still, they did a good job with the riffing, and they did come up with a neat way to bail out from "Commando Cody".
"Hercules Against the Moon Men" was a lot of fun. Alan Steel did OK as Macis- sorry, Hercules, and it does move along at a pretty good pace. Well, until the sandstorm begins. Once again, the riffing is great, the "Ode to Pants" is funny, as was DEEEEEP HURTING!
"The Space Children" was well-made, but far too preachy. And you have to wonder about a secret, high-security DoD project that allows young children to wander around unchallenged. (Sure, it's all but traditional in Japan, but here?) The riffing was OK, though the bald jokes got repetitive. Things worked out better with "Century 21 Calling", which had great riffing and actually made the Seattle World's Fair look pretty interesting. (Once I get a TARDIS, I'll have to head over there.) The host segments were good, though the Jackie Coogan drawings were...disturbing.
I didn't find the Turkey Day marathon intros from last year; I suppose they have to be somewhere, but nobody seems to know where. The '93 and '94 intros were OK. It was nice to see the fans in the former, and Adam West and guests were good sports in the latter, even if Robert Vaughn wasn't able to be on-set. Yes, it was TFNWSRN trying to do a cheaper end-run around BBI, but it seemed to work. (By the way, it's nice that they've been acknowledging the show's existence in their history again.) And I did see part of this year's marathon (loved Jonah's apron & mitts), but I foolishly turned it off before Joel announced Season 12. I didn't hear about it until Friday morning. Silly me.
Well, I think those turned out OK, with the good overpowering the bad. So, let's move on to what's left of week 132. For the Outsiders, I'm going outside the rotation for..."Cast Q&A at the Museum of TV & Radio"... - I have to go into Manhattan to the Paley Ctr. to watch this; let's hope NJ Transit is running OK. ...and for the Originals, the selection is..."Superdome" (Show K-15). - Will they take a knee during the opening riffs?
We'll be right back...

Well, let's look at week 132.
I went into NYC last Friday, and went to the Paley Ctr. location on West 52nd, near 5th Ave. I've been a member there for years, and I really enjoy watching material from their archives. This is one of my favorite videos. It was taped in 1995, before Season 7 had started filming. There was an MST symposium in L.A., and Mike, Kevin, Trace & Jim attended. After showing three shorts ("Last Clear Chance", "Why Study Industrial Arts?" and "A Date with Your Family"), they did a Q&A with the audience. It was interesting looking back at how things were at that time, like talking about who might replace Frank or how things were going re: the movie. Also, the guys had compliments for TFNWSRN (I guess this was before Doug Herzog took over). Mostly, though, it was very funny. (For example, since they brought Tom & Crow, someone wanted Kevin & Trace to do the 'bots' voices. Trace then leaned over and said, "Quick, Mike. Write something!") So far as I know, there are no fan copies of this around. So, if you want to see it, you'll have to go to the Paley Center for Media in Manhattan or at their Beverly Hills location. Either way, I recommend it.
As for "Superdome", it's a standard TV-movie with a whole bunch of differing plot threads centered around the upcoming Super Bowl. (By the way, how did the producers get away with using the term "Super Bowl" without the NFL complaining about copyright?) You've got gamblers, a paid assassin, a troubled marriage, an agent with family problems, familiar actors, and casual sex. What you won't see is football, though. It's not a particularly good movie, but the riffing potential is there. Unfortunately, this was back in the KTMA era. There are long stretches of quiet from the guys. At one point, Joel even says he can't think of anything to say. The host segments are OK, and there are some good riffs, though. Personally, I think this'd be a good choice for a re-riffing on the Relaunch. May I offer a suggestion? JONAH: You know, with a movie like this, you're usually not waiting for a football game. You're waiting for a plane crash. CROW: Or an earthquake. SERVO: Or a ship to capsize. CROW: Or an avalanche. JONAH: Crow! Don't remind me!
I'm going to go split decision on this one, but feel free to disagree. So, on to week 133. For the Outsiders, the selection is..."RT Live: Birdemic"... - Where's Rod Taylor when you need him? ...and the Originals selection is..."Wild World of Batwoman" (Show 515). - I'd better brush up on my not-Chinese.
Don't touch that dial...

And we're back. Let's look at Week 133.
To say that "Birdemic" is one of the worst movies I've ever seen would be an understatement. It's not just cheaply and ineptly made, but it tries to be relevant by shoehorning in pro-environmentalist messages that grind an already slow movie to a full stop. If ever there was a movie that makes you ask just how someone could make it and be satisfied with the result, it's this one. I honestly can't figure on watching this without RT's contribution. I watched the live version, which makes the riffs even more effective thanks to the interplay with the audience. And there was even the bonus short "Norman Checks In", which made my own sometimes tough life seem much more pleasant. (Still, "Spirit of St. Louis"?)
As for "Wild World of Batwoman", I realize it's meant to be a spoof. I know I'm not supposed to take it seriously. However, it's either a surrealistic comedy on a level that not even Python would attempt, or it's a really bad movie. I'm not quite sure which interpretation I'm supposed to accept. Not even the presence of highly attractive "batgirls" can help me determine this. I have to say, though, that even if it is just plain bad, I enjoyed it more than "Birdemic". The "Cheating" short was better-made, if much darker in tone. The riffing was great throughout, and I liked the "Cheating"-themed host segments. (Personally, though, I prefer Hostess Cupcakes to Hostess Snowballs.)
Two bad ones this time, but I'm going with split decision. In any case, on to Week 134. For the Outsiders, I'm going outside the rotation and into the Holiday season with..."RT: Santa and the Ice Cream Bunny"... - I doubt Fred Astaire narrates this one. ... and for the Originals the selection is..."SST: Death Flight" (Show K-13). - Do I have to go through Security before watching this?
We now pause for station identification...

Oh, boy am I late this time. Between the Holiday Season and TLJ, I'm way off-schedule. Time to get caught up.
Regarding "Santa & the Ice Cream Bunny"...oh, dear. As I remember, the live version was somewhat tolerable. But the studio version...the guys do their best, but it's a lost cause. (Or should I say a lost Claus. Yeah, that's cheap.)
On the other hand, "SST: Death Flight" worked quite well. I saw this movie back when ABC first ran it. It's basically a by-the-numbers disaster flick, but it lends itself to riffing quite well. As this is a KTMA show, Joel & the 'bots are still ad-libbing, but there aren't as many dead spots. And the jokes are, for the most part, right on target. Personally, I'd love for them to dig up this movie for the Relaunch; it's certainly worth another, scripted try.
Well, due to my lack of timeliness, I think I'm going to combine weeks 134 & 135. So, for the remainder of 134, the Outsiders selection remains in the Holiday Season with..."The Second Annual Bridget & Mary Jo Christmas Special"... - Is Dean Martin in this one, too? ...while the Originals selection is..."Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster" (Show 213). - Sorry, Toho, I'm still watching this.
And for week 134, when Christmas finally arrives, I'm going outside the rotation both times. The Outsiders selection is..."RT Live: Santa Claus"... - No, Lupita! ...and the Originals selection is..."The Christmas that Almost Wasn't" (Show 1113). - Where's Krusher Kringle when we need him?
Stay tuned...and I hope your Holiday Season is happy and safe.

Well, let's close out 2017 by reviewing weeks 134 & 135.
Starting with 134, "The Second Annual Bridget & Mary Jo Christmas Special" was great. The main feature is an instructional short on how to carve meat. Yes, exciting stuff, but it features Harvey Korman, before he tried to destroy Rock Ridge. They also riff on what appears to be someone's early 50's Christmas Day home movie. The riffing is great, and you can see that B & MJ are really enjoying themselves. There's even guest riffing by Beez and Kevin! It's totally worth the pre-emption of "Ironside" and "Dragnet". (Watch it to understand the reference.) "Godzilla & the Sea Monster" is not one of the better efforts from the G-Man. Considering that it was originally written for King Kong (long story), they had to kind of shoehorn him in. Still, it moves along pretty well, there are some good monster battles and Mothra & the Twins (sounds like a pop group) make a guest appearance. The riffing is great, and there are some good host segments. And no short-panted monster children!
Moving to 135, the live version of RT's "Santa Claus" is, if anything, even stranger than the MST version. They used the full cut, which includes some more of Santa's kids, more of Merlin, the previously-cut appearance of Vulcan, and more of Lupita's dream. We still get the eternal struggle between Santa and the forces of the Prince of Darkness. The movie is way off-kilter, but you get used to it. The riffing is great; they did a good job coming up with new jokes. They also riffed on another "At Your Fingertips" short: "Sugar and Spice". I can't remember if we tried any of the sugar-based crafts in the short during my youth at New Market Elementary. On the other hand, "The Christmas that Almost Wasn't" is my choice for the worst MST Christmas movie. It's just too saccharine, with a one-dimensional villain (whose secret is easily guessed), a truly lame Santa, and the usual "Christmas is Santa and nothing else" premise. I remember seeing commercials for this movie as a Holiday matinee, but I only saw it on TV. Not my favorite Yuletide movie, at all. The new crew does a good job with the riffing; by this point, they did a better job getting the rhythm down in the jokes. The host segments werr good, and I particularly liked the closing take-off on the movie's Christmas Eve montage.
Well, I think that went pretty well. Now, let's move into 2018 with week 136. I'm going outside the rotation both times. For the Outsiders, the selection is..."KTMA Melon Drop Special 1989"... - Yeah, it's a clip show. So what? ...and for the Originals, I'm starting my re-run of the Relaunch with..."Reptilicus" (Show 1101). - Set in dreadful, dreadful Copenhagen.
Happy New Year!

EXTRA! EXTRA! EXTRA!
When I was looking up the 1989 Melon Drop special, I found out something surprising: KMTA did one for last New Year's Eve. So, I'm exercising executive privilege and adding a second Outsiders feature..."The 23rd Annual Emmy Submitted New Year's Eve Melon Drop Extravaganza Golden Jubilee". - With guest star Bob Bagadonuts!
Drive carefully.

Well, let's look at week 136 and the start of 2018.
The two Melon Drop specials were fortuitous choices, as it turned out. Subtitled "The Drop that Almost Wasn't", the 1989 special, as noted, was largely a clip show, made after Jim and Kevin were working on some puppet show. The special showed bits from previous drops, as young Dusty tries to convince his dad Rusty, a KTMA employee, to bring back the Melon Drop following the previous year's violence. (Long story...) Years later, in the special from New Year's Eve 2015, father and son show up again, though I won't explain the background. In any case, both are pretty funny, even though the creators aren't directly involved. In the case of the latter, it's nice to see they tried to continue the tradition for a couple of years. (Did they do one for New Year's Eve 2016 & 2017? Anybody know?) And it's good to see Kevin briefly return as Bob Bagadonuts in the latter. It's just not a Melon Drop without him.
As for "Reptilicus", the movie is a clear example of why Denmark just couldn't make it in the tough, competitive world of kaiju rampages. An unmemorable monster, unmemorable characters, less-than-special SPFX and unfunny comedy relief make this a lesser effort. (By the way, how come nobody noticed that inept janitor Petersen was a near-double for Jack Elam?) Maybe the original, non-English version makes more sense. The episode was an OK start, though. The riffing was good, though they were trying to throw in too many jokes. They developed a better rhythm later in the season. The host segments were OK, including a good intro for Jonah's spacenapping and the new Mads, and the "Every Country has a Monster" song. You would think, though, that the Servo cloning would seem a bit old hat to Tom by now.
Well, we started the new year off pretty well. So, on to week 137. For the Outsiders selection, we're going with..."RT: The Crater Lake Monster"... - How come Jonah & the 'bots didn't sing about this monster? ...and for the Originals, we're continuing with the Season 11 repeat with..."Cry Wilderness" (Show 1102) - Isn't that a Johnny Ray song?
We'll be right back...

So, how did week 137 go?
The movie "The Crater Lake Monster" isn't a total loss. The stop motion animation for the monster is pretty good, and the filming location is nice. Unfortunately, there are a lot of minuses. There's Arnie & Mitch, the supposed comic relief double act; the sudden violent interlude with the liquor store theft, the annoying stock music, and the attempt at a bittersweet ending. It's, at best, a below-average B-movie from the 70's, like I used to see on Saturdays on channel 9 or channel 5. The riffing, though, is great, particularly Kevin's take on a phone call to the local law, and the many jokes about the aforementioned Arnie & Mitch. This isn't one of the better remembered RT offerings, but it's a good one.
As for "Cry Wilderness", the movie is a mess. Sure, there are cute animals, and, like "Crater Lake Monster", there are fine locations shown. But continuity is all but non-existent (Is it winter? Is it spring?), the script makes little sense (so, the kid hitchhiked across the country in one night?), the attempt at being a family-type adventure movie is derailed by the awful blinding of the villain, and near-strangling the raccoon is disturbing. Most of all, though, there's Paul, the most annoying and most psychotic "monster child" since Kenny in "Gamera". Sheesh, but that kid needs therapy. The riffing is good, though there's still the tendency to try to do too many jokes at a time. The host segments were OK. I particularly liked the 'bots as cute & rambunctious raccoons, and the visit from Pearl, Bobo & Observer was good.
Well, two good entries this time. So, let's move on to week 138. For the Outsiders, the selection is..."RT: The Amazing Dr. X" (w/ Bridget & Mary Jo)... - Is this a spin-off with Patrick Stewart? ...while we continue the season 11 repeat for the Originals with..."The Time Travelers" (Show 1103). - Well, as long as they don't make Hitler win...
Don't touch that dial...

Post by kmorgan on Jan 21, 2018 21:15:53 GMT -5
So, let's look at week 138.
"The Amazing Dr. X" is actually a pretty good movie. It's about a rich widow who falls under the influence of a phony psychic. That's really all I can say. There are a couple of pretty good plot twists (one of which I really didn't see coming) that help the story. There's also some fine cinematography, and Turhan Bey plays Alexis (the "Dr. X" of the title) with lots of Euro-charm. On the other hand, it moves pretty slowly and the male romantic lead is typically bland. The riffing from Bridget & Mary Jo is top notch. They mainly focus on the slow pace, the typical movie conventions of the period (like people really dressing up nice for a stroll on the beach), and their crush on HOLLYWOOD ACTOR RICHARD CARLSON! And it helps that they're clearly having a great time quipping away. It was a lot of fun.
As for "The Time Travelers", on the plus side it features some great on-camera SPFX that I still can't figure out. However, while it tries to be somewhat intelligent, it still falls back on the standard conventions (obvious comedy relief character, instant romance, scientific doubletalk, belligerent possible-villain). And I seriously doubt the obvious fan-service spa scene was added for dramatic cohesion. I'd say this is very much like "World Without End", which the original crew riffed on live back in the day. The episode worked quite well. There are still spots where the riffing moves too fast, but they're getting there. There are a couple of neat uses of the more mobile silhouettes in the theater. The Invention Exchange moved a bit too fast, but the host segments were good. I especially liked Joel's silent but smarmy cameo as Larry. I have learned that the movie was cut down a bit, though, particularly the end. I'll have to look that up.
Two good ones this time, I thought. So, let's move to Week 139. For the Outsiders, the selection is..."RT: The Last Shark"... - So, this wasn't a boating accident, either? ...and the Originals selection is the next Season 11 title..."Avalanche" (Show 1104). - Snowbody knows the trouble I seen!
Keep those cards & letters coming in folks!
